View Full Version : My Ranger is going flatbed
SlugzRacing
09-25-2005, 09:27 PM
I was hoping to start on my F-150 today but the tranny is going in the mail Monday and Tower does not have juggy leaf packs in stock so I took the Ranger to the bandsaw and OOPs, there goes the bed! I got much farther than I had expected since I normally only have a couple hours on Sunday afternoon to really play. The cage is mainly for looks but it does have a brace that runs over the frame (under the body) so it will function like the real thing. Next Sunday I hope to finish the box out back and tweak the cage and bed so they sit flat on the frame; then I need to chop the frame down about 1.5cm.

Yeah it is short, but I want it to look like the frame has been bobbed. The wheelbase is where the real 1:1 would be but by using a 4 link the frame can be cut down for a greater departure angle. It is more common on Toyota trucks turned rock crawlers.
a Masher 2000 fits down in the bed but I will have the spair tire mounted on the roll cage.

i think it looks fine. maybe a bit more tubing?

Thats pretty cool, but I would take the fenders from the bed and slap them on the side of the roll bars!

I would love to add more tubing like a bar across the top of the windshield with two supports running down to another bar over the cowl panel but the only way I can get the body in/out of the cage is through the front. If only there was a thing called cold fusion
Jug, I am not sure I am following your train of thought

Similar to what you see on Baja 1000 trucks, they have the exposed tubing in the rear, but still have the bed sides.

Man I know the flatbed and the bobbed frame issue ;) I think it's a bit short even for a short flatbed

Clicky clicky! (http://www.kbtoys.com/genProduct.html/PID/2709139/ctid/17/INstock/Y/D/)
That is the only place I know of that sells them. Supposedly KB toy stores have them but I dont have a store near me to check for sure.
Jug2, now I understand. I dont think it would work well with the odd shape of the fenders, that and I was thinking about giving the bed to someone who wants to make a dually.

Small update
I finally got some time between work and other jobs around the house and had time to work on it. I added the front and rear portions of the bed as well as moved the axles forward on the frame about 1.5cm. I moved the axles to improve the approach angle and allow the axles to sit closer to the frame so the truck rides lower, and it just looks better
The bed also serves as the rear body mount and I hope to store the esc and rx in a 'tool box' so I can put the interior back in the truck.
Next up is redoing the coil overs then I can start cleaning it up with paint and tail lights :chug:

One more, I think this is how I will be running the suspension. I want the chassy to sit as low as I can get it (upper links hitting frame) but I had to link mount the shocks out back; somethng I did not want to do. I will run it like this for a couple of packs and if I like it the front might get a carbon copy of the rear.

She is now up and runnin but she still has a long way to go before I call her 'done.'
The tail lights are in but not yet wired up; I want to wait untill I decide on a light bar on the roof. I also need to add some tow points below the tail lights and a license plate but I am liking it so far.
Next up is the steering, I am thinking about a frame mounted 1/4 servo ought to do the trick 8)

I have a set of Imex Maxx swampers but at 3 inches wide scale is so blown out of proportion that I might as well just run full size moabs. I want to narrow them but I also dont want to run a swamper looking tire on this truck, I want something like
http://www.desertrat.com/interco/super_swamper_radial_tsl-200.jpg
I wont be able to get an exact replica but I think I might be able to get close with creative cutting. If that does not work then I will have to order a set of All-Ts but those are also a little wide IMO
Old Busted Hotness
11-09-2005, 03:10 PM
i've seen the 2.2 J-Hawgs (or G-Hawgs?) cut to look just like those, on a narrowed rim it could look just about right. may not be as tall as you're looking for, though. you may have to get creative there and splice in a little extra. or just run 2.2 Moabs.
i like the bars, btw :nice:

What're the dimensions of these bodies stock? Width, length and wheel base? I'm thinking about putting one of these on my Maxx project. I just noticed these are branded as Artin, should make them pretty good. I have an Artin Expedition body going on my Nylint for a scale trail rig. Mine's what I guess an Expedition Sport-Trac would look like, its got the regular Ex to the rear of the rear doors, then the top is cut down into a small tonneued over bed.

I had not thought of G-hawgs, hmmm they would be easyer to cut for that pattern hmmmmm............
Trikekid, if you want your maxx project to be a god performer on the rocks do not run a hard body, they just weigh too much and kill the center of gravity. They are great for bashers though.

Are you having someone build your bumpers? Duff stuff looks good and I almost made a copy of a front bumper for my rig.
I did use some 1/4 brake line but not much, most of the cage is 5/16.
Funny you should mention top loader axles, I am seriously thinking about a set of TXT axles for this truck so I can use these axles for another 2.2 comp rig.

Max power Welcome to scale4x4! :chug: :chug:
nice rig :nice:
using TXT/jugg axles will greatly complicate the rig compared to how it is now, but it would be more scale to have a central trans and driveshafts going to the axles(you may find the 4 link geometry needs changing so it doesnt stretch/compress the driveshaft).
Old Busted Hotness
11-11-2005, 05:45 AM
DO IT, SLUGGY! a rig with this much scaleishness deserves driveshafts, and it's not all that hard to do. the fact that your interior is out makes it a whole lot easier, you've got a ton of room to work with in there.
