Let's see what you're trying to do Harry.

I am trying to make an ARB style bullbar for the hilux. I can't find any pictures of one. I know of a manufacturer that did make one that was pretty sweet and made from aluminum, but I cannot remember the name. I know it was not ARB or TJM. Anyway, the chunks are nylon cut from a cutting board and the uprights are sheet steel cut with a waterjet.

LMK,
HArry

The Stray Cat

ok so what's not working? it looks like a good plan.

Bullitt
03-11-2010, 11:59 AM
making it all go together

edit:
The bumper will consist of 6 main pieces. Two uprights, the solid top piece and 3 pieces on the bottom. The bottom three pieces will be held with screws from the bottom to the main bumper piece. I just can't seem to figure out how the main piece can attach to the uprights without looking like an erector set was used.

Harry

The Stray Cat
03-11-2010, 12:25 PM
Well my first suggestion would be to make "pockets" for the cutting board to sit in and then have tab bent over to bolt the nylon on to from underneath. I can't draw a picture for you as I am at work but I hope you get what I am saying.

THE_JOKER

Sweet bumper if you can pull it off :chug:

The Stray Cat
03-11-2010, 12:59 PM
HArry, where you have the four holes for mounting the bumper to the plates, cut an L shape and fold down then bolt that way, then attaching the 3 bottom pieces will be exactly like you planned.

Bullitt
03-11-2010, 01:40 PM
You guys are too much. Thank you for the vote Joker. That is one vote for the old girl. As far as the bumper is concerned, that is what I was thinking about, but there are a couple issues. Each piece is solid and .46" thick (11.68mm for you Joker). The angle would have to be well below the lowest set of holes. I can't think of the other issue just yet.

I just thought of something though. Replace the nylon pieces and make the side an middle pieces with 3/16" keystock, (4.76mm) and weld it to the uprights. Then wrap the frame with styrene. Do you think that would work?
Or do I just make it all out of steel and let it hang on everything it makes contact with?

Harry

The Stray Cat
03-11-2010, 01:51 PM
Wrapping in styrene would work, I don't have pics, but I did a bumper similar to this using the stock F350 bumper and wrapped it in styrene .060 to give it the appearance I wanted.

PS I voted also!

THE_JOKER
03-11-2010, 01:53 PM
I would make it out of steel an live with the hang ups, but i take the easy way out

Have to admit the styrene wrapping sounds good!, maybe shoot for that one?

Sorry i cant be of more help right now, i cant get my brain into gear  btw thanks for the conversions! its considerate  :chug:

Bullitt
03-11-2010, 02:12 PM
My only fear is that something has to give. If the bumper is more stout than the frame, What bends? That's right, the frame. But I also do not want the bumper to break and scuff my body.

Harry

The Stray Cat
03-11-2010, 02:14 PM
HOw hard you planning on driving that thing Harry? I wouldn't be that concerned about it. Even if the bumper is stout the frame will still bend if ya hit that hard.

Is that the Slash? If it is I'm not surprised. TRaxxas might get busted on for being mainly RTR but the durability can't compare. I used to beat the snot out of my Tmaxxes and Rustlers and never had a problem.

Bullitt
03-11-2010, 02:54 PM
How did you get the styrene to stick to the steel?

Harry

The Stray Cat
03-11-2010, 03:00 PM
Screws, bolts and nuts. I used flat screws so they were counter sunk then I glued more styrene to styrene over it. By time it was all done it was actually two pieces of 060 stuck together for the most part.

Purchased 9 this morning when I picked up a copy of Final Fantasy XIII. I watched it before I threw FF13 in my PS3. What a very strange movie. Well done, the characters are compelling even if they are a little formulaic personality-wise, and the warped history/alternate (from ours) reality angle was very interesting. It's a keeper.

Any suggestions for my next purchase? Nothing too weird, violent or graphic (sexually or gross-ily). I'm making my next Amazon order tonight or tomorrow morning. I'm getting Mad Monster Party jus' because (saw it when I was a kid, thought it was really funny - I loved Yetch).

Bullitt
03-12-2010, 12:08 AM
I suggest Blazing Saddles. I used to watch that movie all the time. Very funny.

Harry

Ragnarok

I gotta be honest - I'm not a Mel Brooks fan. I liked some of the stuff he did, ie. The Silent Movie and the remake of Jack Benny's To Be or Not To Be, but most of his work either approaches or goes beyond my threshold for vulgarity. :/

Bullitt
03-12-2010, 12:45 AM
yeah, you would not like blazing saddles.

The Stray Cat
03-12-2010, 07:12 AM
Well 9 was a very good movie, a lot different than the normal. It had a very deep plot and for an animated flick it was nice to see that.

Blazing saddles would definitely approach and might even molest Rag's level of tolerance. However I enjoyed it.

I watched Planet 51 last night, it was a decent flick, I wouldn't call it a keeper though. It'll be in Wal-Mart $5-$7 DVD areas before long. Rag have ya seen Zombie Land yet, that is defintiely a keeper. It isn't horrific or gorry or anything you would think of a zombie flick. I recommend it.

Ragnarok
03-12-2010, 08:47 AM
I'll definitely consider it. Horror-comedy, right? I can't remember if it was my younger brother or a nephew that was telling me about it.

I paid the full $30 for 9, and as much as I liked it I would have felt better it had been more like $20. The place I regularly shop is only one of the three local places that carries Blu-Ray movies, and they normally don't mark stuff down for a very long time. :( That and their selection is often pretty spotty, which is why I always hit up Amazon when I get the opportunity.

Had been thinking about District 9, but I'm not sure I'm in the mood for it yet. Also thought about getting Gentlemen Broncos (I'm a bit of a Jared Hess fan) and Ink. The latest Mystery Science Theater 3000 set comes out on Tuesday, too. It has one of my favorite episodes, The Final Sacrifice - a pathetic attempt at an Indiana Jones adventure meets…I dunno…a piece of lint in the barren hills of Canada. I can't get all of them, though.

If I had unlimited resources I could easily spend five grand on movies and TV shows in one shot. But I don't, so I can't, so I won't.

Bullitt
03-12-2010, 09:07 AM
Did you ever watch Monster Vision on TNT back in mid to late 90s? Joe Bob Briggs made even the worst horror movie very entertaining.

I don't watch TV at all anymore. I haven't for several years, and I don't miss it. I watch the old TV shows I liked from long ago on DVD. :D Probably the most recent TV show I am collecting is Everybody Loves Raymond. The swinging family allegiances and sibling rivalry dynamic made it a great show.

Ragnarok
03-12-2010, 09:54 AM
Made my order. I'm just going to pick up another season of Raymond, Mad Monster Party, and Heavenly Sword for when I'm done with FFXIII (that could be more than a month…). HS was less than $48, and I don't expect it to drop below $40 until it goes out of print, so I'm jumping on it like Oprah on a baked ham. I'll get SW: The Force Unleashed - Sith Ed. next time.

Hey, it just occurred to me…it's Friday the 12th.

I just got home from a going away party for a friend who's going next week to do time for his dui.
It sure was fun. Twelve pints kept me up all night long :nice:
Many cool things happening this evening.
This guy that was at the party wanted to sell me his 1943 willys jeep.
Of course I said yes, cause this jeep has a plaque on the firewall that says that "this jeep was a part of the landing in Normandie June 6 1944, and was rebuilt in France 1945" or something, I cant remember a 100%.
I've been drooling over that jeep for like 15 years, whitch is more than half my life, And now I'm able to buy it.
Of course it is gonna be alot of work, rust and all, but it still got the original flathead four.
That makes it worth it in my opinion.
I cant wait till he is ready to sell

Oh, and btw, Ted Nugent - Stranglehold is STILL one of my favourite songs:

Speaking of Willys Jeeps and WWII. Here are a couple pics that I have in from my grandfather during WWII.

Labeled "War Just Over"
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k164/harrybullitt/Family/GlenJeep.jpg

This is the coolest I thought. I wish the picture was clearer. My grandfather standing in front of a ME109 that his ground artillery crew shot down. I have the clock that he pulled out of the plane and it still works.
Caption on back of photo states
"Near Paris We got the ME109 Aug 15, 1944"
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k164/harrybullitt/Family/GlenME109.jpg

Got a quote on the uprights to be water jet cut. $15 including the 1/8" steel. I thought it was a decent price. I also picked up another cutting board and some RIT dye while I was at the grocery store on Saturday. I am going to try the nylon and if it does not work, then I will try out the steel frame and styrene wrap.

whats the differance between an emo and a goth anyway?

According to Urban dictionary

EMO
Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.

Goth
Someone who likes the darker side of things. They usually listen to death metal and goth music, such as Dismember and Bauhaus. Marilyn Manson is NOT goth. He's just...weird. Real goths are not depressing and suicidal like the posers you see at Hot Topic. Goths are fun to be around and aren't afraid to laugh at themselves every so often. They don't worship Satan and aren't evil despite what some ignorant people might say. Goths don't all dress alike either. They like to create their own unique style. Goths are also very intelligent and creative. A lot of them are writers and artists. Goths DON'T envy the popular people. They are what they are because it makes them happy. Goths would rather stay who they are and be among the so called "freaks" than be like everyone else and be popular. They understand that there are more important things in life than popularity, and usually succeed in life while the popular ones don't become much of anything.

Hope this help Og,

Harry is spot on with the subculture spotting.

I always have paralleled with Goth, but there is a major technicality that stops me acutely being one - I can't be arsed keeping my eyebrows and beard dyed black. Hair is easy to maintain, but the other is too much effort to conform to a stereotype just to be identified.

I don't even know if Goth existed when I was in school. You were either A Prep, a Jock, A nerd, or a burnout/druggy, or a farmer. Kind of like the Breakfast Club!

Ragnarok
03-23-2010, 08:29 AM
We didn't have "farmers" at my high school, and we called the druggies "stoners." More of those than there should have been. The poisoned seeds of goth had been planted recently. We had this guy who liked to wear ladies black lingerie over his thrashed thermal underwear, and there were lots of androgynous white-makeup + black lipstick types.

Bullitt
03-23-2010, 08:59 AM
We had the Ag kids (farm, roper, FFA, 4H), sports types, preps, stoners, and the between-ers. The last group was a little of two different groups. I was an ag/prep that was a tad on the sports side. I played golf for the PE credit and enjoyed getting out, so I continued playing my last two years in school. I knew just about everyone and everyone knew me. Only had a few really good friends, but a lot of people that I talked to. The goth comment was of course a joke.

Hope this help Og,
Harry

I listen to "emo" and death metal. I wear tight clothes, but I wash my hair. I enjoy the darker side of things, but it's all in good fun. So what am I, according to urban dictionary?

Gothmo, you built it for the right reasons then and you will be happy with it for a long time. That is why I built the COE, because that is what I wanted to build. It is getting tweaked as we speak.
I am already not liking the idea of the onslaught of XJs that will be rolling here in another month. It will be like the Honcho epidemic. I am sure they are good kits, but I am just fine with my Hilux. I was going to build my hilux before the build off was even mentioned so it's not like I entered it to win it. Since I've learned to braze I totally wanted a truck with a lot of tube work.

The XJs will be the new Honcho for sure. Safe to say I'll never get a Honcho, but I may get an XJ. It won't be anything awesome, just a body on a SCX TR. I won't even post it unless I do something cool to it. With that said 1,000 others will do just that, put a body on a stock chassis and call it a build thread. Quite Honcho-esque if you ask me.

I know what you mean. This May will mark the 2nd anniversary that I started my original build thread for the COE. It went through many changes but I am just happy it is now done, to a point. I really liked it as an old school tow truck, but it was just a phase. I need to finish the details like getting the interior mounted, painting the cab roof white, lettering on the side, spare tire, etc. Then I get to build the trailer and the matching belly tank lakester to pull on the trailer. I really can't wait to build that one.

The Sex Pistols brand of punk isn't the only style of punk music. They had the first style, but in the early 80s it changed to more of a hardcore sound. Emo came from that. Post-punk if you will.

I shouldn't have said post punk. Post punk was hardly punk at all. It was the beginning of crappy 80's music. Art rock type of crap. Devo, Cure? Stuff like that I guess?

But like hardcore punk was Minor Threat and early Black Flag, even Bad Brains. That's the type of punk I'm into. I don't know any of the modern hardcore/punk bands though. Kind of moved on from that type of power chord music.

The evolution of of music is pretty interesting.

Okay so I realized its been a couple of weeks since I've given any movie reviews so I have a few to catch up on.

Here goes:
First older one but, "Push", decent action flick, some acting could've been better, overall it was worth a watch, not a keeper.,

"Did You Hear About the Morgans" typical RomCom, had some funny moments for sure, any married or attached guys good one to watch with the ladies, not too much romance or drama.

"The Fantastic Mr. Fox" I thought this movie was great, pushed the envelope a little on appropriate for small kids, but it was still very good. It was done in classic animation style, like the old " Davey and Goliath" tv show. Defintiely a good one to buy, especially for kids in the 6-10 range.

Lastly, "New Moon" another two hours of my life wasted on this new Vampirism is teenage cool crap. If any of the actors had a lick of acting talent it might've been digestible, the only positive side to it, was the CG wolves. Don't waste your time with this one, if you saw the first movie this isn't any better.

One of my nieces is a huge "Twilight Saga" fan and vehemently refuses to see any of the movies. Every once in a while I'll ask if she's seen either of the two movies out so far - then she gets this weird look on her face. "I'll never watch them." Okay. Actually, good for her. :nice:

I finally read a actual book for the first time since I got out of HS. My wife encouraged me to read it and said it should not take me long. I walked over to my son, took the book from his hands, gave him a piece of bacon, and read Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Granted it is a 5th grade level book, but I was pleased that I finished it in less than a couple hours. The last book I tried to read, I started about 8 years ago. I make it to the 3rd chapter and then I just don't read it anymore. When I pick it up, I have to start all over again. I know, it is sad.

I read constantly, mainly fiction, but I enjoy it. Diary of Wimpy Kid is some fun stuff my daughter has read the few of them that are out.

Well I've tried all sorts of things myself, mostly stuff found here in the states like Buffalo, bear, rattlesnake, turtle, emu, shark. I imagine Reindeer is similar tasting to white tail deer which is a normal menu item here in NY, we call it venison, and that is some good eating!

I wanna know what "Mechanically Engineered Chicken" is, i seen it on the back of a packet a few weeks back, i didn't know if it was a fancy name for chicken killing, or if there was gonna be some nuts an bolts in the tin from some sort of cyborg chicken?

The Stray Cat
03-28-2010, 06:27 AM
It means they "engineered" the chicken to be bigger and juicier. Basically gave the chicken all sorts of chemicals and steroids and stuff to make it grow the way it did.It also usually makes them full grown quicker so the turn around time on new chicks is half what it used to be.

Never heard of Mechanically Engineered Chicken. I've heard of Mechanically Separated Chicken, and that has to do with how the meat is processed. The only thing resembling your last description that I know of is the TV show Robot Chicken.
