In Norway things may be hunky dory for the FunkyHunk, but here in Ragnarville we're stuck in 2003 for DSL speed. No one here in the Mat-Su valley has decent DSL service. There are only two providers - MTA (mine) and GCI.

MTA has a huge service area, but inconsistent, slow and expensive DSL. GCI has the faster, more reliable service (they're actually cable), but a tiny service area. By the way, nice custom user title, FH.

I'd consider myself very, very fortunate to have even 1Mb/s. http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/emo/emo-boohooviolinsmash.gif

If it's anything like the PS2 slimline.. it's gonna be crap. My mate has a PS2 slimline and it won't play DVD's, or CD's and it crashes all the time. Whereas my PS2, one of the first ones, is still going strong.

It's $100 cheaper, actually. Wait…sorry, just saw that you're from Australia. It was a $200AU drop. :nice: It dropped $100 here in the States.

Yeah, the PS3 Slim is kinda odd looking. Not unattractive, but the textured matte surface is almost too inconspicuous. The touch-sensitive power and eject surfaces are gone and now have actual tactile buttons.

My old PS2 was purchased on launch-day - October 26, 2000 - and still runs like it was new. My little bro has it now and I recently replaced it with a PS2 slim, and have had zero problems with it. I wouldn't worry too much about the new PS3. Sure, there's always the chance of getting a lemon.

Ragnarok, GT5 is suppose to be really realistic and should be a good game. But to bad you can't get Forza 3 for PS3. :) Forza 3 looks awesome:D

Ragnarok
09-07-2009, 02:56 PM
Forza does look cool. There are only a couple of games I want for the 360, which is why I'm not interested in getting one. If there were more like 8 or 10 games I would want that aren't available on the PS3, then I'd probably get one eventually. Too Human was the main one that got me interested, but I purchased a game console once just for one game a long time ago and that was a bit of a mistake. Don't think I'll do that again.

I've always like the Gran Turismo series (2 was my fave) but it always felt more like a job than a game. It can get monotonous, which is why I put it in the "maybe" column. :D The damage physics and the addition of Lamborghini is pretty cool, though.

I Can Crawl

I actually had a think about getting a PS3 because i have a Logitech wheel for PC which is compatible with playstation, but the price puts me off when i still want to keep my 360. I recommend get GT5 and get a Logitech wheel ^_^ Oh yeah, and Dirt 2. They will be amazing with a steering wheel :)

What genre of games you into, because i played Prototype and hated it but it might just be me :P

Ragnarok
09-07-2009, 03:32 PM
RPGs (the Final Fantasy series, for example) and Racing (most kinds, not all). However, there are a few 3rd person/action type games that I really enjoy. The Soul Reaver series was absolutely awesome, but the team responsible for it was fired by Eidos before they could complete the final chapter. :kick:

The premise behind Prototype looks cool. I haven't looked to see if there's a demo on PSN. It's one of those I'll pick up when it drops to $30. I have yet to pay full price for a PS3 game. (Not including the PSN-exclusives, though.) It's one of the reasons I haven't picked up Heavenly Sword. That sucker's been out for almost two years and it's still sixty bucks! The day FF13 hits, though, I will drop the coin for it.

Been playing the DiRT 2 demo for the last hour and have come to two final conclusions:
1) I do okay on the Trophy Truck course. I've come in 1st the last three races. Barely.
2) I suck at the rally course. I lose control way too easily and "crash up". My poor Eclipse looks like a rampaging wad of fail as it comes down the final stretch of road.

Magnum P.I. was a really good show. Simon & Simon was pretty good, too. Another one that was pretty cool was The Equalizer. Unfortunately, only season 1 is on DVD…and probably will be the only on on DVD. Wise Guy is another one that has had a goofunky release. It was sold by the story arc, not by season, and only some of them have been put out. Plus they're insanely expensive if you can find them.

Newhart is another one that's ticking me off royally. Season 1 is probably all they'll ever release, and it was the lamest season out of an otherwise great show. I'm just grateful that all seasons of The Incredible Hulk, Sledge Hammer!, Due South and Cadfael have been released.

When we would get called out to the shop floor and there was me and two others, I would always say..."I'm Harry, and this is my brother Darryl and my other brother Darryl". I loved saying that. You want to see the ultimate non-actor? Watch The She-Creature with Lance Fuller. Better yet see the MST3k version. He merely stands there, waiting for the other actors to get done with their dialog before he does his zombified line-read. His presence in the film constantly says, "I'm not in this scene."

And now it's time for my report: "What I did today."

Drove to Hatcher's Pass. ddtuass knows where this one is. Went all the way up to the Independence Mine. The following four images were taken just a little ways below the Independence Mine. It overlooks the Mat-Su valley.

…The valley:

…Trusty co-pilot that was complaining all the way:

After we came back down the Pass, we went through Palmer and then through Wasilla and about half-way to Talkeetna. Got a couple of pics as we drove through Houston:

…And a super-sexy late-70s Ford Bronco for sale that we passed on our way out of Wasilla. Wish I had teh munneh:

Weather's been pretty typical for this time of year: gettin' cold and raining. We had an awesome summer, though. We've also had some pretty nice days this month in spite of the rain and gray, and today was particularly nice so we played hooky from work and went up the country a little ways.

I didn't get any pics of the mine. We hit the parking lot and turned around almost immediately. Since it's a state park, there's a fee involved if you drive pass the gate, so…a penny saved is a penny earned, as they say. :D The restaurant up there is deserted. I don't know when the owners abandoned it, but it looks like it's been a while.

And I lust for that Bronco in unusual and unhealthy ways. :( But, every penny I have is tied up in my bourgeoning studio (finally) so all I can do is dream. After that I can worry about a vehicle. I'll probably end up with some burned-out Fubaru Plague-acy circa 1992 with more rust than paint and visqueen n' duct tape in place of the rear windshield.

I'll start.. I'd rather run into the big as I think I'd have a better chance of escape.
Raptorex kriegsteini or Tyrannosaurus rex? Neither would be the only option. Raptorex would be able to run you down with little effort and then rip you apart before you die. Tyrannosaurus would be able to take one step without running (Robert T. Bakker's assertion of Tyrannosaurus' running ability wouldn't even be a factor) and crush you between its jaws, like an iron maiden with a tongue, and then swallow you whole. If its mouth didn't kill you, you'd die a horrific death by being smothered/drowned and burned by its digestive juices.

I read part of it in high school. Couldn't read all of it because it was a reference book, therefore it couldn't be removed from the library. It's a little tough to find since it appears to be out of print, but worth the effort. I need to get one myself. http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/emo/emo-bookread.gif

If I needed extreme mobility, I'd definitely look for something with a 13 to 14" display. The newly announced HP Envy13 is 110% Victory, even if it looks and costs like a MacBook Pro. But the kind of rig I'm looking for would need a large screen with something that's relatively movable but not something that would be going away from home that often. I have been doing some web development and design over the years, and will be doing a lot more, so screen real estate and a GPU that's not too weak is important. Plus it has to be less than One Kilobuck. I really like the looks of the HP HDX18t, but they're a little more expensive than I can justify.

Mebbe wuhn a deez…http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114660 I actually like the look of this Toshiba a lot better than the Acer I mentioned earlier. The Acer has a GPU advantage, though.

It's probably going to be either the Toshiba or the Acer. May 2010 is my window, so it's pretty likely that both companies will have new machines by then.

For new mobile workstations, HP is introducing an 18-er with the new mobile Lynnfield Core i7 CPUs - a 1.6GHz Quad-core with hyperthreading, which kicks the Core2Extreme QX9300 mobile quad in the sutnack with a very pointy steel-toed boot on most operations. HP Pavilion DV8, I think it's called. I'd guess it'll be in the $1,800 to $2,200 range. We'll know on October 22 - the same day Windows 7 launches.

If you want the extreme…go with the Clevo D900F. It's a 17" rig that uses a desktop CPU - Intel Core i7 Nehelem processors (that includes the Core i7 975 3.3GHz hellbeast) - with up to 12GB ram, 3 internal HDs, and a 1GB Nvidia 280GT GPU. It's about 12lbs loaded and uses a 17" LCD. XoticPC.com is the best place to get them in the states. It starts at about $2,300 with the Core i7 920 and goes as far as you can afford.

Speaking of future, I'm looking at used cars here on Planet AK, and it's insane the prices of stuff. Just found this: http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp?tracktype=usedcc&csDlId=&csDgId=&listingId=29496501&listingRecNum=0&criteria=sf1Dir%3DDESC%26alMdId%3D20717%26mkId%3D2 0015%26stkTyp%3DU%26mdId%3D20717%26rd%3D100%26crSr tFlds%3DstkTypId-feedSegId-mkId-mdId%26zc%3D99501%26rn%3D0%26PMmt%3D1-1-0%26stkTypId%3D28881%26sf2Dir%3DASC%26sf1Nm%3Dpric e%26sf2Nm%3Dmiles%26alMkId%3D20015%26rpp%3D50%26fe edSegId%3D28705&aff=national

It's a 1993 Bronco (OH NOES!!!) that looks pretty good. But, the listing is about $7k with 95,350 miles on the odometer. It seems a little steep, dudn it? I'd think $5k or less. Maybe I'm out of touch.

Actually, after looking at the pics more closely, I'm NOT out of touch:
50948
50949
50951

Look especially at this one…
50950
1. Dent down the side above the rear fender well.
2. Rust on the upper right of the tailgate door.

I also saw chipped paint on the fender flare/running board setup on the third pic. Maybe that price still isn't out of line if 95k on the o is considered low-mileage for a machine this old. Gad, I wish I could afford that '79 Bronco I saw on my day off. :(

We play with RC cars. I don't think there is going to be enough sophistication on this site to discuss the big screen version of Hamlet. However, if you ask what movie this quote came from, you would get a lot of correct answers.
"Does he look like the kind of guy who would put doo-doo in the capsule?"

I won't post the answer because I need to respond and move from 6th to at least 5th place on this thread.

Maybe if you said "Hamlet the Chimp"…

Looking forward to the new Wallace and Gromit short, "A Matter of Loaf and Death." It's supposed to be released as part of a compilation with the three previous W&G 30-minute films on DVD n' Blu-Ray today. I'll get the BR edition in a couple of weeks. Might pick up "Wolverine," "Gladiator" and "King Kong" on BR while I'm at it. I haven't seen "Wolverine" yet, and saw a little bit of "Kong" Sunday night on ABC - I was impressed big-time. I've seen the original a few times and the '76 remake once (that was TERRIBLE…almost as bad as the sequel, "Kong Lives!") and what I saw of it I think PJ's version is even better than the original. Holy Dang, Naomi Watts is beautiful.

I'm a little disappointed that the BR version of "Gladiator" isn't the extended release they put out on DVD a couple of years ago. Probably have to wait another year. Double-dippin' sons of Katie Elder!

One of the things that got to me was how well Jack Black did in a serious part. Of all of them that deserved to get stepped on or find his final resting place in a pile of dinoscat was that dork that played the "dashing action star" that turned out to be the biggest self-centered wuss in the whole group. I think he was in "The Kingdom" for a few minutes (got blown up in the second bombing) and was on "Morning Edition" - that corny CBS drama where this guy got a newspaper delivered to him with the next day's headlines.
