Ragnarok
07-13-2010, 11:46 PM
Been raining here some, too. Not too bad. In fact I kind of enjoy it. Spent the better part of yesterday in Talkeetna finishing up a kitchen and it was very, very hot. Like almost 80F. My ancestors were murderous Vikings and thieving Celts - acclimation to heat ain't part of my genetic toolkit.

Might be getting my first music software next week. Maybe. Cockos Reaper. Super versatile, very low-impact on CPU, and OS agnostic (run on Windows, OS X, or Linux via WINE). It lacks a lot in included dynamics processing and modulation processing, but pair it with Sound Toys Native bundle and AudioEase Altiverb and I won't have to worry about it.

So its been a while since I gave a movie review, last night I watched Percy Jackson and the Olympians. WHat a great simple movie. It was exciting and the effects were great, and the story was well done. Its god for kids like 11 and up, some scary images for the youngins. Its definitely one worth buying and watching several times.

Harry, Like I said there are a couple of "monsters" like the Hydra(multi-headed dragon) that could be scary for the younger kids, my 4 year old was ok with the dragon, but the fury was scary. But all in all it was a good movie. I'm going to see Sorceror's Apprenitce Tomorrow night!

Anything that involves Adam Sandler needs to be fed into a stump grinder. Then the stump grinder and the movie need to be burned in an incinerator, and then that incinerator needs to be burned in another incinerator that can burn, re-burn and triple-burn stuff, and THEN that whole mess needs to be shot into the sun. Nope. Someone else's YT vid, but that dog is so much like our Husky/Shepherd mix in mannerisms and look (but not color) that it's freaky. He doesn't handle cats as well as the old pup in the vid.

Okay, double-u to-the-tee-heck? Ed Norton won't be back as Banner the next time The Hulk is in a movie. I thought he did a really good job as Banner. But now Mark Ruffalo is rumored to be in talks to play the Hulk's weaker self. Won't work. He's better cut out to play a Maverick-driving, Corona-drinking, dart-slinging hot tub salesman. The only guy who might pull it off would be (laugh at me if you will) Hugh Jackman. Seriously. Unfortunately he's already Wolverine, so that can't happen, but he resembles Bill Bixby enough and is an incredibly adept performer that he could have done it. An alternative would have been Ioan Gruffudd, who was awesome as Wilburforce in Amazing Grace. Unfortunately he was also in The Fantastic Four. <insert face palm>

Mark Ruffalo will not be able to pull it off like Edward Norton did, I just read that and was like WTF??? THis whole Avengers flick should be interesting, especially considering that the two mainstays of the Avengers Capt America and Thor, these two movies could tank seriously bad, and then they teake those characters and slap them in a movie together. Its quite the gamble MArvel is taking.

Naw. I just can't get excited about that one. If it's really good, I'll see it, but my tolerance (for lack of a better word) of comic-book movies has gotten really low. The Chris Nolan Batman films and the last Hulk were about the only ones that I really, really liked. Wolverine was okay, and the Hellboy flicks were okay, too. But some of those nearing release, ie. GL, Thor, Cap. America…I can't find any enthusiasm.

The wagon. I'm back on. My 3-ish week hiatus from the diet wasn't as catastrophic as I thought it'd be. 10lbs. gained, but if I'm careful that will go away pretty quick.

Like Ed said, I DUN'T! I haven't been able to build, work on or buy anything RC for years. My last new kit purchase was in 2001. My most recent parts purchase was in late 2008. Thanks, guys. Personally, I prefer this emoticon --> http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/emo/emo-highfive.gif

Frodo Bucket sucks. :p You might try something like www.yousendit.com. It's an FTP upload service that I've used for getting big files transferred between my older brother and myself. (Had to do some goofy Z-Brush file stuff a couple of weeks ago.) I think the free access is limited to 100MB per transfer, and surely that would work.

Here's my current position on my music. <ahem> The last stuff I composed happened in 2001, which was shortly before my music rig got dismantled. I feel that it's really early and not fully developed. Embryonic was a term I used once. At this point the only stuff I've done that I don't mind sharing too much are a couple of video game music rearrangements that I did. As for my original music, which is certainly more interesting than "just another FF7 or Mega Man 3 cover tune," I'd rather wait until "RAGNAR'S NOYZE FAKTOREE" is running full-tilt and I've had a chance to get my groove back. Early 2011?

Here's a checklist of what I need to get going:
- Controller (settled on the Akai MPK88 + decent Z-stand)
- DAW Software (Cockos Reaper - might get that next week)
- Synthesizer Software (Spectrasonics Omnisphere, u-he Zebra)
- Percussion Software (Toontrack Superior Drummer 2.0, EWQL Storm Drum 2)
- Audio interface (MOTU UltraLite mkIII Hybrid)
- Monitor Headphones (AKG K702)
- Processor Software (iZtotope Alloy, Izotope Ozone, iZotope Spectron)

I have my computer, so the foundation is there.

MojaveMonster

I hear ya. I've got I track with lyric that I'm happy with and another instro I don't mind sharing....that's if no one else can notice the echo is not in perfect time ( or divisible by any even number) with the tempo. And one experimental techno groove with the MS2000 I could probably share. But that was from 2004 and nothing since. I tickle my bass and acoustic couple times a week but I'm not in it like I use to be. I often thought of selling everything minus a couple guitars but......I spent so long collecting things. Before RC it was music. So it would be like someone selling all there RC's. I just can't do it.

I'm more of a jack of all trades but master at non. If I continue in music I'd rather concentrate on bass, occasional guitar, and my voice is getting better. The v-drums will probably stay for stress relief or for a good cardio, and because they look good sitting in the corner, but mostly because no one will give me what I want for them anyway. The keys can go, and someone already stole the turntables and all my damn vinyl

One day I guess.

edit: pm sent, Rag

Ragnarok

I know what you mean. Music, either the actual writing of it or simply playing, satisfies a very different outlet than RC. At least for me it does. RC to me is exercising engineering and experimentation in making machines do things. Plus there's the fantasy aspect. It's a lot cheaper to own a bunch of miniature off-roaders than a real one - one that could get a person killed if they rolled it, at that.

I'm not saying that modelsport stuff can't be art (holy crap! - look at most of the work guys do here and try to say that without lying) but for me it doesn't complete my artistic needs the way my music has. Being sick, depression, and a whole cadre of complications have kept me from getting back to it, but a realignment of priorities and self-determination are what have gotten me dead serious about it again. After about ten years, I'm going to probably have to relearn a whole bunch.

Hey Ed- My neighbor's son pulled into his parent's house Monday night with the sound of a rumbling V8. This V8 sounded pretty bad and over the course of the week, it has sounded better and better. I finally saw the beast today and it is a '70 something Dodge:nono: Adventurer. Old faded orange paint, short wheelbase, and 4WD. For an old dodge, it is not bad.

On a much weirder front...My mom's BF bought my brother a '75 Jeep CJ5 the other day. It is pretty rough and they put diamond plate panels around it, so that should mean that it is covered in rust.

I saw that movie last night, too, Ed. Gotta say I liked it a lot. Took the gf to go see it and she liked it too.

There were one or two small things I would've liked to see done differently, but nothing that really interfered with the story. Disney knows how to make a movie, I'll give them that much.

Oh, and theme parks... They're good at those too.

But I'd definitely suggest going to see it with the whole family. If you're concerned about little ones thinking magic is real, you might want to have a talk about that first, and there could be one or two scenes that could be scary to the really young kiddos, but other than that, nothing to worry about that I can remember. :nice:

I had one of those PlaySkool BFs, too, but it didn't last long. Of that era of battery-powered MT toys, the Stomper Bully was actually the coolest. Bigger, faster and more capable than the PlaySkool SSTs (Bigfoot, Orange Blossom Special…there was a third one, can't remember its name). The Animal was second coolest. My little bro had one of those. Total blast to run in the snow with the claws extended and locked.

Wow I forgot about some of those names. Just found King Kong truck but I can't aford it right now. Not to mension a few posters but the guy wants $150 ea on those. I also looked up the BigFoot tractor pull sled but no luck. My Dad built me an arena one year for my trucks. Basically a sandbox filled with birdseed so I could keep it inside. Grew up in rainy Washington. Seemed like a good idea but the seed always got stuck in the gears.

Man I'm having too much fun time traveling.

Edit: also want to find old truck posters from the center of the 80's offroad magazines

Edit: Sorry RAG, I forgot to give you props on your collection. You got everything grouped together? I'd like to see a pic

The playschool Bigfoot was a must have. I had that one, an Orange Blossom Special (2wd pull truck), Midnight Oil (4wd pull truck) and the sled. Fun times took place in my living room. There was the Camaro funny car that I believe was call the Warlord.

Yes Rag, the Stomper Bully was the best. The front suspension would pivot about 5 degrees per side. Was not much, but enough to be cool. Mine was super fun. I also had the King Kong truck as well, and it was my least favorite of all my toys. That one would not even pull the playschool sled empty. It had no torque, speed, nothing. It looked cool, but that was it. My brother had the animal, and I did not like it. Probably because the claws came out of the tires. Even then, I was smitten by the scale bug. There were no claws coming out of monster truck tires.

Ok Yes, Animal. Had it. How about Desperado? I have to look up some of these others you guys are talking about. I had Stombers out the yinyang and that track, I think it was called Earthquake Alley.
On the PlaySkool BigFoot I had a couple, one I grabbed at a garage sale that had to inners so I use to pull it behind my bike. Man that thang took a beatin

Yeah, they're an obscure make of electric violin. Usually when you do an online search or ask people most will mention Zeta, and a few will mention the Ron Wood Violins (Viper violin, Stingray cello, etc.). As cool as the Ron Wood ones are (you can even get them with frets!), these are made by Jordan (http://www.jordanmusic.com/), which I think are even more awesome. Like the Ron Wood ones, these go all the way up to seven strings. Jordan's instruments make Ned Steinberger's instrument designs look downright obese.

Also, I think it's spelled Mannequin. :nice: It's one I don't always spell right the first time either.

The N5 just came out in the US. You can get it at Dynamism (http://www.dynamism.com/notebooks/viliv-n5.shtml). It has the same power as a typical netbook in half the size. Fujitsu makes one that's spec'ed higher and $300 more, but it's nowhere near the Viliv in build-quality.

70F to me is pretty warm. Like I said, gosh, about year ago in this thread , I'm big and pink, so heat and me don't get along well at all. I've been in 115F+ weather before (MONSOON SEASON IN PHOENIX!) and I thought I was going to die.

Regarding the guitar thing, I have some special Christmas/birthday gifts I'm wanting to start a whole year early. Guitar building is a very strict discipline unto itself, but I've been a woodworker the better part of my life and I have access to tools that a lot of professional luthiers don't. Although none of that counts for anything if I can't learn how to build one. I'm thinking, but haven't firmly decided upon the following shapes that I want to use and/or adapt: Yamaha AES-FG ("sevened"), Ibanez RG (non-carved top, with pickgaurd), Gibson SG (gonna have to be a lefty), Luna Andromeda (scaled down from 25.5" to 24.75"). I have a carved top design I cooked up a couple of years ago that I originally wanted to try at my first time at bat, but it's going to be a lot of complicated contouring and shaping that could go very, very bad. I'm thinking I'll start with just two - the AES-FG and the RG, which are very simple designs - and work on the other three/four later on.

My next decent payday I gotta get me a bunch-load of mahogany. :D

Stingrays are pretty cool. A set of strings shouldn't cost too much. Not sure about the UK, but Stateside they're about $20 to $30 for a 5-string set. Unless you're also going to have a luthier or guitar tech do a complete setup, too, then it will certainly cost more. The advantage there though is if there's something amiss with your setup they'll be able to take care of that which would justify the cost. If your dad's bud can do it, then that's good, too. If you're so inclined, there's a pretty good book out there by John LeVan titled "Guitar Setup, Maintenance & Repair" that is quite helpful so you can do it yourself.

…and show my yard who's boss.

HOLY SCRAT! I don't know how that can inflate to the equivalent of $65USD even with VAT and some kind of import duty piled on. Just insane.

Here's what that Yamaha AES-FG looks like:

64410

I'm not planning to try a 1:1 copy for several reasons. One, it's the wrong color (I'm going to do either a clear-over-figured Mahogany or some kind of burst over a figured Maple). Second, I'm making it a seven-string 'cause I already have the pickups for that. Third, making a straight copy is just lame. The "FG" in the instrument's name refers to Frank Gambale, as it's his signature guitar, BTW.

Here's a variation of the RG shape from Ibanez:

64409

It's a shape that's usually classified as a Super Strat. I used to think they were pretty old-hat, and to a certain degree still think it, but for a first-timer like myself it's probably a good place start because it's not too complicated and it's a proven design. If I decide to put on a fancy top it will just be a veneer. I need to state that I really hate those inlays. Basic dots, blocks or even smiley faces would be better than those pink-spandex-and-makeup-wearing-crotch-stuffing 80's-era sharkfins.

Another shape I'd like to try other than my own originals would be the ESP Forest GT. That'll have to happen after I get more proficient.
