I liked it, I thought some of the acting was a little off but hey it's all about entertainment anyway. Like I said before, I really liked the the way they caprtured Kong in a more Primatal form as to being a guy in a gorilla suit. Of course the CGI helps, it's not like in the original or the 70's version they could just CGI it. It was a guy in a gorilla suit, or a miniature model for the movies.

"Hey, can I pay seven-fifty to see John Travolta and his tentacle snot?" was the question least asked in all of world history.

I'd add "Glitter" and include the entire "Matrix" series (a rip off of "Tron" and "Terminator" in too many ways) to films that deserve to never be seen or heard again by humanity. Furthermore, I'd say about 99% of anything done by Roger Corman, Ang Lee, Dean Devlin, Roland Emmerich and David Lynch ("The Straight Story" would be the one exception) should be burned in a machine that can burn things twice, and then put what was left and the machine into a second incinerator and burn that!

"Godzilla" was a crime against nature and all of humanity. Patrick Tatapoulous' Godzilla design was the only thing good about it, but the creature's motives and personality were completely wrong. "Oh, 'he's' pregneant," was merely an excuse to try to reenact "Jurassic Park's" raptorfest. And who the hell thinks Matthew Broderick is talented enough to be in anything other than a Barney spin-off? The only people I was rooting for was 'Zilla and the Frenchman. The rest can go to Sheboygan and rot.

Yeah, it was called "War of the Gargantuas", which amounted to Frankenstein vs. Frankensteen. I'm kind of familiar with it, but I never saw it. Supposed to be the sequel to "Frankenstein Conquers the World", which I have seen, but that's only relevant to the Japanese version. The US release cut all of the sequel references out. "FCtW" was a terrible, terrible idea. Frankenstein's monster fights a giant armadillo/Chinese dragon thingy called Barugon. Toho should'a just stuck with Big G. Then there's the Daimajin stuff…I don't even want to get into that. :p

Barugon had a big part in a somewhat recent Godzilla movie that I think has to be one of the best Toho ever made. It also has the worst name: "Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidora: Giant Monsters All Out Attack." In the Goji-fan circles it's just called GMK. One of the few movies where G is a truly horrific and cruel badass (even the creature design was creepy), and the ONLY one where Ghidora's a good guy. I loved it. They even got a slam in on the US Godzilla in the first three minutes of the movie - awesome!

If there is anyone to do a new Godzilla film…after seeing what he did with Kong, I think Peter Jackson ought to handle it. If not him, then maybe The Mexicutioner, Guillermo del Toro, but I don't entirely trust him. He might take it into Lovecraftian territory, like Godzilla is really Cthulu. That would be the equivalent of making Sauron a Decepticon. I don't know, maybe that would be the way to do it?

The Stray Cat
09-23-2009, 07:16 AM
I hear that I hope Mr. Del Toro don't turn the Hobbit into some love story because was no love in that movie. Their wasn't even a female character mentioned really in the Hobbit book. Speaking of Tolkien, it'd be awesome to do a movie based on the Silmarillion, now that's a story!

Ragnarok
09-23-2009, 10:48 AM
I'd be more worried about del Toro taking The Hobbit and making it so different looking and feeling that it wouldn't fit in context with The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He said that it will be MUCH darker than the book was, and I remember reading that he wants to change the look of the wargs to look more like real wolves rather than bear-sized pitbull-hyenas. The rumor right now is there will be three films: two based on The Hobbit (directed by del Toro) and a third that will act as a lead-in to LoTR (directed by Jackson). But that's 100% unconfirmed. It was buzzing around the movie news sites, like Rottentomatoes.com, a few weeks ago but I haven't seen anything since.

It would be awesome, but I'm not sure The Silmarillion would be film-able - it'd have to be at least 24 hours long with a budget of $3 billion and be in production for about 12 years.

The Stray Cat
09-23-2009, 10:59 AM
True about the Silmarillion but the story line is excellent. Del Toro needs to just stick to the book. Now making the Wargs more wolflike would be okay by me, as that was how Tolkien described them. I hope they include some lesser characters to. like I thought leaving Bombadil out of LOTR was kind of crappy. SO hopefully they'll include Beor in human and bear form!

I've heard about the extra tie in film but they better do it soon and keep it to Tolkien's notes, the actors are getting to old to carry it on. Other than Gandalf of course because he doesn't really age.

Ragnarok
09-23-2009, 11:58 AM
I know a lot of people were disappointed about the omission of Bombadil, but according to Philippa Boyens, the biggest problem Tommy-Boy presented was he was completely immune to the power of the Ring. It undermines the all-consuming evil of the Ring and takes away almost all of the urgency to destroy it. "Hey, why go to all that trouble of spelunking in Moria, thwarting spiders, skittering over the rocks of Mordor and dodging the Orc Draft when we could just give the Ring to that singing forest hermit and end the movie early?"

From a dramatic perspective, they did right thing. Plus it would've taken so long to do the whole meeting with Tom Bombadil sequence. That's just my opinion.

The most important thing to me for The Hobbit movie…Smaug! They cannot FAIL that one! He must be awesome! The Laws of the Universe DEMAND IT!!!

Dang!

Well, that's not technically how one counts it because they run in parallel rather than series. But, yeah, it's four processors (cores) on one die all running at 1.6GHz each with two threads (think "highways") interconnecting each core. So four cores, eight threads. Plus it overclocks like a mug! The 920XM is the one definitely worth coveting, but at $1,000+ for just the CPU, I don't think it's worth it. The 1.72GHz 820QM is pushing it at $550-$600.

These aren't the first mobile quads, but they are the first ones worth owning. The Penryn series units were expensive and, for the most part, not worth the hassle. They ran fairly hot, especially the C2E X9300. These new processors have a lower clock-speed but are considerably more powerful and theoretically aren't the groin-torches the Penryns were.

These also remove the need for a Northbridge processor - it's all done on-die.

Everyone's going to be using these processors in the near future, so the limitations of having to choose from just Dell, Toshiba, HP, Clevo and Lenovo at first is going to be a non-issue.

Apple's probably going to adopt them too…except only in their top-of-the-line 17" MBP that will require one's first-born to pay for. It will be January of 2011 before they "trickle down" quads to their 15" and 13". I am SO through with Apple. It's freaking tyranny if one wants to have access to the Mac OS.

:lolbeat:

I'm joking big-time there. It's just that I wouldn't necessarily characterize the conflict between Frodo and Sam instigated by Gollum that way. :nice:

BTW, "The Hobbit" has more problems than who's playing Bilbo: http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/09/25/mgm-on-the-verge-of-bankruptcy-where-does-this-leave-bond-and-the-hobbit/

It more or less says that MGM, the company that owns the movie rights to "The Hobbit", as well as the Bond franchise, is in financial turmoil and is on the edge of folding. Nothing negative is certain, but there's a chance of some intellectual properties changing hands if there is.

I live in South Central-ish AK, so it's not quite that bad, but it does get dark early and gets light very late. 4-5 hours of light/day during the solstice days. Up in Barrow and Prudhoe Bay, the two farthest-north towns in AK/USA, it's about six weeks of uninterrupted darkness.

Well it's not like it's possible to actually derail this thread. It went off the tracks as soon as they were laid.

Not to yank this discussion too far out of whack, images of HP's new V8 behemoth nappy with its Clarkson quadrophonic MFU Pinto were seen in a leaked HP 2009/2010 catalog. It's not as garish as the Tosser Quasimodo X500, but flashier than Del Monte Tomatoes. Simpler to think than attack…

Never said it werent possible stu, i already know its been derailed  just genuingly interested in which lucky person is gonna be the owner of a new piece of tech :chug: Ian told me about a new mat earlier that you place your phone or whatever on it an it charges it wirelessly, the new modern tech baffles me, i also hear some laptops have a fingerprint recognition instead of a good ol password??? It's simply mind blowing sometimes

Aerosynch and myself were having a discussion about new-fangley-dangley notebooks a few pages back - that's why I went back to the laptop subject. The fingerprint readers have been around too long. I'm always paranoid about that crap.

As for myself, I'm not getting any new piece of technobaublery this year (save one) like I had hoped. I spent some time on my finances this last weekend and came to the conclusion that I won't have the money to either 1) build my DAW; or 2) get a laptop instead. As an alternative, I will be picking up one of these the middle of October or early November…

51347
A Korg M50-73 workstation. I might actually have something to contribute to the "Scale 4x4 has Talent" thread. Sans-video, though. It'd be MP3 only.

The DAW (desktop or laptop) was to serve as the cornerstone of my project studio. (DAW = Digital Audio Workstation, by the way.) With it, I would do all of my multitrack recording and sequencing, mastering, as well as run most of my synthesizers/instruments. The plan was to acquire the computer this fall and my master keyboard 'round January or Febtober (it was to be a Kurzweil Music Systems PC3X). I'm going to put that off for a while.

With the Korg M50-73 (in the pic above) I will be able to compose and work on a self-contained machine that has a fairly good synthesis engine, lots of controls and a robust sequencer. The downside is that I won't have a lot of the control and editing convenience that a computer-based rig will give me. I can still edit but it's a little less simple than with a mouse. This keyboard does have a touch-screen, so that will help some.

So my pro-rig with a DAW at its core will be put off until this coming spring. I'm going with a Clevo D900F (or a newer variant if that's what is available by May/June), which is a 17" laptop with a Core i7 desktop processor.

The nice thing is that 'board isn't too expensive stateside - $1,399. But you guys in ol' Blightey are getting kinda hosed - £1,049.57, which is almost $1,700 Amur'can. Seems a little out of sorts. I took AP Physics my senior year of HS. The only problem was that the school itself and the Anchorage School District would not recognize it as such - it only got a standard Physics title and credit. It was a weird deal. Our instructor insisted on teaching a college-level class regardless of the class's official title. The very first thing he said at the beginning of the second semester was, "Gravity is not a force."

The stuff I was writing before the muse left me was sort of symphonic/new age/ambient/rock. My ultimate goal is to explore more symphonic territory, but with this initial purchase of the M50 that won't be attainable at first. In fact, many of the orchestral sounds on most hardware-based instruments are laughable. The Kurzweil PC3-series would be one of the few exceptions. One can find pretty good strings sure enough, but overall it requires software instruments for absolute realism and versatility because they can access gigabytes of multisamples and have far more sophisticated scripting functions. The M50 has a lot of contemporary sounds, and its synthesis engine is robust enough to allow me to freely develop a lot of new and unconventional noises, however super-realistic orchestral and acoustic sounds aren't its strong suit.

Oh, and this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdYHBwsko7k

There would be other instruments, but these would be pillars upon which my music temple would be based. The "sound" I'm hoping to get kind of close to (without being a blatant rip-off of) would be a chimera-hybrid of Hans Zimmer/Jerry Goldsmith, Ulrich Schnauss and David Arkenstone. My older music had sort of a Vangelis/Kitaro vibe. I also tried my hand at video game music rearranging.

And before anyone gets on me about going back to the subject of music gear, blame London350 - he's the one that asked me.

Nuh-uh. This is the first time I've heard of it. Most movies that supposedly take place up here are usually filmed in British Columbia or Washington state. http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/emo/emo-annoyed.gif

A couple exceptions would be "On Deadly Ground" and "White Fang." The sixth Star Trek movie filmed up here on Knik Glacier (not all that far from Ragnar's Bat Cave) in the sequence where Kirk, Bones and Iman's space-yeti character break out of the Rura Penthe penal mines.

Ragnarok

Yeah, it's called "Sherwood." I was sort of following it when it had been announced some time ago. Crowe was originally to play both Robin Hood and the Sherriff of Nottingham. That changed a while back. It's to be directed by Ridley Scott. Maid Marian (Marion?) might be played by Olivia Wilde - someone I hadn't heard of before, but supposedly will also be in the Tron sequel. I think that just announcing that there's a Scott/Crowe Robin Hood film makes it better than the Costner one.

"My boat."

No apologies, soldier! That's an order!

I had a similar experience about twelve years ago. Not the same circumstances, but basically the same outcome. For me it was a drifting apart and the feelings I had for her weren't 100% mutual. She did think a lot of me, but it wasn't fully reciprocal.

One day after not hearing from her for almost a year I received a letter that she had gotten married. I thought someone had killed me. We weren't together and I wasn't actively pursuing her, so I had no "right" to be filled with jealousy or rage, especially now that she was someone's wife. Regardless it still hurt immensely. She had contacted me twice within a year of that over the phone and I refused to let on how ruined I was. It took me a very long time to get over it. She haunted my dreams until only recently. That certainly wasn't her doing, but it was something inside me that wouldn't let go.

I don't have a lot of good advice unfortunately. You basically have two options I guess:

1) Hold on to a memory and let it consume and corrode you until you have nothing left, or…
2) Accept that what happened did hurt but realize that you have opportunities for a new relationship to make new memories that will be more important and special than those that are behind you. It will take patience and strength, but it will be worth it. It can be a very exciting prospect.

I took the first path and it nearly destroyed me - so I would advise against taking that road. I lost almost ten productive years of my life to the memory of someone that should not have had any further meaning to me. So I have been on that second path for a while now. I'm not currently looking for a girlfriend (I don't have the means to entertain her for one thing ) but I will soon and I look forward to it with great anticipation. :nice:

I only asked because my 19 years of DJing (both sides of the pond) have left me with a lot of contacts in the dance music arena. I was going to offer to link you up.. but sounds like you are going in a (very) different direction.
It's all good though. When it comes to music, I'm into EVERYTHING... so I can't wait to hear some of your stuff. :nice:

Thanks for your enthusiasm.

Yeah, dance music is one of those genres that is kind of its own universe. I've heard a lot of it, and not much of it is both original and very well executed. The good stuff is definitely out there, but like a lot of music, it's not as easily found. Andrew Aversa, aka. zircon, is probably one of the better indie artists in that arena. He's got a lot of music on iTunes right now. "Antigravity" is probably his best album, but the others certainly are pretty good.

There's a faction over at the KVRAudio.com forum that are big-time trance haters. They refer to it as Tarnce - which I assume would be short-bus electronica according to their logic. I sympathize with some of their cynicism, but not all of it is bad. The only genres I hate with passion would be jazz and any form of rap.

The original plan I cooked up this last year was to have enough material completed (and more importantly enough gear amassed) for an album in late-2010, but I'm thinking more like 3rd- to 4th-quarter 2011 now. But you never know; I might get my crap together sooner than I thought and have a CD pressed before then.

My first album will be self-produced and then see where it goes from there. Twenty years ago the most prominent label that released the kind of music I've written would've been Narada, but ever since their absorption into the Virgin/EMI behemoth they've been a channel of non-stop smooth jazz and wannabe Peter Gabriels. Today it would be Neurodisc. I'm not sure I like giving up creative control for the sake of exposure, though.

Yeah, I hear you... but as someone who has been a part of the music biz for very many years, I have to say that I know many, many, many producers who are very precious about creative control, but also broke mofo's.
The amount of unrecognised talent out there is ridiculous. I think the hardest thing to get your head around, for creative types, is the business side of the music business. ie, making some money out of it.
There is a balance between doing exactly what you want to do, and doing something that earns a crust. It's what stops most people from succeeding.
But it can often feel like compromise, which is somewhat soul destroying. Believe me, I've played my fair share of 'sell-out' (as well as 'sold-out' ;) ) sets just to earn a living. But it's those nights when you can let loose exactly what you want to, that make the job worthwhile.
I'm rambling a bit, but what I'm trying to say is; pay as much attention to the business side as the music side, and you'll be fine.
Too many excellent producers out there who's stuff is never heard because they don't 'get' the industry side of making music.

And as far as 'trance' music goes... meh, you can keep it. I don't like very much trance music. As you said it is too formulaic.
I think dance music in the US, is very different from here in the UK.
There is a different kind of 'soulful' house music, that I mostly play. i'll try and find you some links to stuff that I like.

All You Need to Know About the Music Business 6th Edition

The Future of the Music Business: Music Pro Guides

Guerrilla Music Marketing Handbook

The internet has given a lot of new opportunities that didn't exist before (as well as new challenges). I'm going to have OasisCD do the manufacturing of my 1st album, and with that service they include a kind of quasi-independent online and offline distribution program. The local music stores, including chain stores like Borders, are eager to sell local artists' music.

There are two major ambient/newage/electronica radio stations - one online (MysticRadio), one over-the-air broadcast (Echoes) - that really cater to new music, providing it's interesting and playable. I hope I fit the bill. They have given tons of exposure to a lot of up-and-coming artists, so there's that angle, too. I'm a little unsure of some of the "social networking" sites that a lot of musicians use. LastFM is the least irritating to look at, but it's succumbing to MySpace-ification. But if LastFM, FaceBook and MySpace will work, I have to consider them. An indie artist from Canada, LIGHTS, used MySpace and it was a major factor in her promotional stuff and garnering new listeners. Granted her work is very accessible and radio-friendly (mine somewhat isn't - some of my older pieces are eight to twelve minutes long - they'd have to play commercials at the halfway point), but it's original and very well executed. In fact, she won the "Juno" award for best new Canadian Artist earlier this year. She also tours…a lot…like, constantly. That may not be feasible for me, but at this point all of this is theoretical. I'll get my music the way I want it and then go from there. I'm not going to rush it. ;)

http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/general/misc-eltonjohn.jpg

A side note, I've just spent the last while studying the sequencer functions of the Korg M50 in its manual (PDF from the Korg website), and I have a serious obstacle: it doesn't have piano-roll editing! <groan> Instead it has this cryptic events list that is so arcane to try to work with that I will be driven completely mad and might very well look like that picture of Elton John. The least expensive synthesizer/workstation with piano-roll sequencer functions is the M50's big brother, the M3, which is a far more complete and much more serious machine. It's also much mo' munneh!

51444

If I can find the extra scratch, instead of getting the M50-73 ($1,400) I would try to get the M3-61 ($1,900). It's more money and fewer keys, but I'm going to be better off in the long run. It has things that the M50 doesn't have, like sampling, higher polyphony (120 voices vs. only 80), expansions to add a FireWire audio interface and a 24-voice analog modeling synth engine, aftertouch, more controllers, and a better touchscreen LCD. I'm just trying to figure out how to be able to afford that in the next six weeks. I could get the M3 in a 73-key version, but that's way, way, WAAAAAY too much - $2,300.

I wasn't a rabid A-Team fan as a kid anyway, but still… (I did watch it if it happened to be on.) How does one make a serious A-Team movie?

Now, if they had cast Jim Carey…or Steve Carell…as Murdock I'd have gone downtown and turned in my badge.

Bradley cooper will make a good Face, and Quentin will be good as BA, the other two not so sure. I don't know if this is going to have the cheesy one liners and all or actually be more action based. Only time will tell. I've learned a lot from these classic TV shows made Movies. Wait for the DVD release!

If I had the money I'd definitely be interested because it would supplement my main 'board pretty well. Unfortunately I don't have the coin. :( It's going to be a major financial struggle just to get the M3 as it is. I'm even considering dumping every scrap of RC stuff I have to get the money by November - possibly even my entire videogame collection. I still appreciate you mentioning it, though.

The MS2k was a really neat little synth, though. It only had four voices, but those four voices were killer. In a lot of ways it sounds even better than its descendent, the R3, which has twice the polyphony and more synthesis functions than the MS2k (the R3 amounts to a baby Radias). The MS has a lot more grit and edge, especially in its low-pass filter.

I really appreciate that. Tell you what: when the dust settles after I've picked up my M3 (providing I still have a place to work in another two months ), I'll let you know for sure because an MS2000 would be awesome to have as a lead 'board or something to kick out "Berlin School" step-sequenced ostinatos. (The MS2k has been on my short-list of complimentary keyboards for a while - the Roland JP-8000 is another. Kind of funny I'd run into one on an RC forum.) If it's in good shape and I'm able to give you the money you need for it, I'd definitely be interested. :nice:

I know that there are some kind of limiters being put on QWERTY keyboards nowadays that are supposed to prevent typos from typing too fast so they create a lag which actually induces more typos, like letter omission. I'm a fast typistologistician and I run into it on my i-rocks kb.

Man I don't own a PS3 but my three brother in laws all own one. I'll have to send that link to them, I don't think they have had any trouble but maybe they have loaded V3 yet.

I'd be ticked off for sure though.

Ragnarok
10-06-2009, 08:57 PM
The one game that's most effected is "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune." I don't own that one, so I have no way of checking to see if it would be a problem on my system. Everything else has been fine. When I saw the other reports, I fired up a couple of Blu-Ray movies and used the controller - not one hiccup.

There's been a subsequent FW release (v3.01) that supposedly fixes the game software problem, but the hardware failures still persist. I must be one of the lucky.

The Stray Cat
10-06-2009, 09:10 PM
Well all these gaming systems have their troubles, it's just part of the deal with electronic equipment. You can buy a dvd player and have it die in a week, that's why "real" companies like microsoft and Sony, put such nice warranties on their products.

Ragnarok
10-07-2009, 12:10 AM
Well, this is a little different than something like premature hardware failure due to the occasional component defect(s).

The suit claimed that Sony is charging $150 to repair PS3s with "sustained hardware damage" from the update.

Sony must not put much stock in their own warranty. It's a compulsory update that Sony makes every PS3 owner take part of, and then they are (allegedly) making the customer liable for the damage that their own firmware causes. Sony's like most gigantic corporate entities: they'll remain arrogant about this until it costs them too much money. I like their products, but I've grown to not think very fondly of the company itself. :(

I'm doing just fine with my PS3, like many other PS3 users who have been unaffected, so I cannot complain about my own situation with my console, but if the allegations are true then Sony needs to accept that they are liable in the bricking of PS3s that their firmware (that everyone who owns a PS3 MUST DOWNLOAD and INSTALL) did.

They also should find out why only some were effected and others not. It may have something to do with certain machines made during a particular run, or from a specific factory. This is where your theory might actually be a factor. I shouldn't have disregarded it off-hand like I did.

Oh well. It's not my mess to clean up. :D

Those new systems come with flux capacitors for time travel abilities. That's why they cost so much, but the neat part is because of the time capabilities, you can travel back in time and play games on any system you want, Sega genesis, atari.

With that in mind, what also has to be noted is the impact on your electric bill for the power needed, granted its a great system by far exceeding todays standards, but the Skeptovic 2000 is hardly user friendly, not to mention out of the question for pacemaker owners.

Good idea for the power usage, although to time travel to that era, your gonna need all 3 of the Skeptovic 2000 Jinjanto holograph's wich set you back another 25G's. Thats the trouble, all these latest gadgets get add-ons further down the line all contributing to that PROFIT thing.

Has the whole freaking world gone insane?!? The Simpsons used to be a family show (emphasis on "used to be") and now they're going to have the matriarch of the Simpson family flashing her wares in the pages of a girlie mag? I'm fully aware that Marge is a fictional character - a drawing at that - but the principle of the whole thing still stands. What's next, the Power Puff Girls doing Maxim?

In all honesty my social isolation has more to do with my personality, a painful autoimmune disorder and my somewhat overwhelming work hours. Even if there was a lot to do and fun to be had here in Wasilla, I probably wouldn't be partaking. I don't go barhopping (that's for booze frogs) or dancing (that's for cool people with little inhibition) or chatting online with babes all day (that's for unemployed cage-fighters). Doesn't leave much for me. :( Sorry.

Oddly enough, no snow. It's been in the upper-40s/lower-50s for the last week or two. Been the first time in a couple of years that the snow didn't come while the trees still had a few leaves in them. This year the trees are bare but it's not that bad outside. Drizzly rain, but not bad. It's not that abnormal.

I remember the winter of 2001/2002, we had barely any snow all year (to be clear, there was some, but very little) until the first week that March when it dumped almost 40 inches of it in 24 hours. It snarled the airports, mail, everything. I sold my E-Maxx on eBay when it happend and I ticked off the buyer by taking so long to mail it - there was no mail coming in and none going out for about a week, and he refused to comprehend it.
