That's been me pretty much all day at work today. People are in a mood and none of us are getting any work done at all. We all need a vacation, I think. We've done nothing but laugh and cut up the entire morning.

Got my big humidor today. The other one was getting way too cramped. I'm seasoning it right now so I can't move the smokes into it just yet. I'll be taking the small one to the office to keep some cheaper smokes in for when we all stand around outside behind the building and cut up. And I may just keep one or two higher-end cigars in there for when the chancellor or president visit.

Had a decent cheap smoke tonight, too. Magicos Cubanos. Really cheap, but still handmade Dominican. The lack of quality/quality control definitely shows though. It was smooth enough, had a good draw, and the flavor wasn't terrible. But it was very uneven, had some soft spots and a little knot or two. Didn't burn evenly, but it lit up easy enough.

How big o' humidor did you get? We built one that was nine feet long and almost seven feet tall.

Well if you change feet to inches, that's probably about right. It should hold roughly 60 cigars, depending on what I put in there, and the humidifier and hygrometer. It's not huge, but compared to the 20 cigar humidor I was using, it's a big step up. The new one is a good bit deeper too, so I can fit some longer smokes in there. And it's fully lined with Spanish cedar, rather than mostly lined with it.

The local smoke shop has a walk-in humidor that's probably bigger than my living room.

Ragnarok
09-01-2010, 11:01 PM
Spanish Cedar is interesting stuff. It's actually a Mahogany. It's lighter and "punkier" than other Mahoganies. The closest smelling relative to it is Sapélé. Sapélé doesn't hold that strong smell too long after it's cut, though.

Not to be overly political in this comment, but reading comments from the news stories about the rig explosion makes it painfully obvious that there are just as many idiots on the left as people think there are on the right.

One of my favorite lefty comments was "BAN OIL!" Where do they think half the stuff in the computer they're using came from? Rocks? The plastic tree? Even if the world stopped using petroleum-based fuels tomorrow, we'd still need to drill for oil to keep up with the ever-increasing demand for consumer goods derived from petroleum-based plastics.

It doesn't matter what side they are from any longer, they all change sides to suit what ever need at the moment. In NY we have a politician running this year that started as a Democrat, couldn't get backing, changed to independent, couldn't get backing, and is now running on a Republican ballot. They are all just puppets to the highest payer.

Yes for the COE and she will be roughly 39" or 39' in scale length. It will be 8" (8') wide at the rear wheels. I will haul the Datsun and another 1/12 Porsche that I want to get to the vintage races.

What you are seeing is the frame only. The front will have an enclosure and styrene will wrap the sides. Also, the cars will be open to the elements and for the world to see.

I had no idea. I just assumed that since it was called cedar that it was cedar. Or is all cedar in the mahogany family?

Actually, the whole "cedar issue" is quite convoluted. True Cedars like Atlantic Cedar and Cedar of Lebanon are the only true cedars, and they're in the pine family (Pinacaea). They grow natively in the Middle East and Mediterranean regions and are coniferous (needles). Trees known as Cedars in the US aren't cedars (Western Red, Port Orford, Eastern, AK Yellow, et al) but are actually Cypress trees (fam. Cupressacaea <-- had to check the spelling on that one) and are also coniferous. Go back far enough in their scientific classification they are related since both are coniferous, but very, very distantly.

Spanish Cedar (aka. Cedrela, I think) is part of the Mahogany family, (Meliaceae) grows in Central and South America and is deciduous (leafy), a totally different kind of tree. Although, they're an evergreen deciduous, so they're kinda weird. It'd be like a carnivorous ungulate, like the Andrewsarchus was.

The only reason I can figure that those particular Cypresses and Cedrela are called Cedars is the odor. ALL of those woods are very strong in odor long after they've been milled. All woods have an odor as they're being worked, but most don't keep "fuming off" the way some do.

So I'm guessing the 'salt cedar' and junipers that overrun everything down here are in the cypress family as well?

$60 to have the three main pieces cut. The two side pieces and the top plate that the hitch will be welded too.

It is a shame that it will all be covered with styrene.

They're a shrub in the same way the mesquite is a shrub though. I've seen salt cedar and mesquite both get bigger than any tree around them. 'Course, in all fairness, the only actual trees that can really grow here are live oaks.

Of course a shrub is still a tree, botanically speaking. The Wiki article I found on Salt Cedar sez its family is Tamaricaceae. It's native to Europe, Africa n' Asia, which I would deduce that it's a foreign invader if it's in showing up in your turf.* Based on the soil it likes and super long taproots it sounds like it may be tough to get rid of, too. Also said one species is known to hit 18m tall, which is something I didn't see the first time I read it, so…uh…yeah. :lolbeat: Not "just a shrub."

* EDIT: scrolls down Wikipedia article to read where it says essentially this. <facepalm achievement unlocked>

It's definitely something that's taken over, and it's nearly impossible to eradicate. The problem is that the places that tend to have them thickest is right around earthen livestock tanks where you can't use the 'proven' methods of killing them because diesel fuel in the water supply probably isn't a good thing.

Between the salt cedar and the feral hogs (and a few other things), the landscape here is changing faster than anyone can fight it back. It makes me sad if I think too much about it.

EDIT: I'll cut you a really good deal on salt cedar and mesquite wood if you're interested, Rag. :lolbeat:

Pork, the purer the worser, rips my insides out like a Drano and razorblade milkshake. The more processed it is, the better I am at handling it, ie. pepperoni, some Italian sausages, etc. I eat bacon, but I'm never able to get enough to become sick. (Four slices?) Some ham-based lunch meats I'm okay with, too. But chops, ribs, and similar are like instant, bleeding IBS to me. I think it's the only real food allergy I have, if one can even call it that - "low tolerance" might be a better term.

And bugged…? I dunno. Not feeling like myself. My typical episode of maudlin and existential irascibility.

need help guys. bought a charger last week for my batteries, it arrived quickly, i opened it all up, checked the display worked etc but couldnt charge my batteries because the conectors were different. left very good feedback then waited for the conectors.
got to charge them the other day, the first battery it seemed to top up ok, took 25 minutes, but ever since then it hasnt worked and just brings up error messages. my uncles charger charges my batteries fine though.
i emailed the seller to ask for advise, but he hasnt replied. the charger is obviously faulty, what do we think?

Believe me Rag. The Lucas Oil Series and the American Le Mans series is about the oly thing good on TV.

I got really upset the other day. The American Le Mans series was on and I had laundry to do. I took 3 baskets of clothes upstairs to fold and so I could watch the Speed channel upstairs. Speed channel was not coming in, so I switched to Versus and drifting was on. No lie...This was the very first time I have ever seen drifting  Watching that was worse than watching an Anna Nicole Smith doing Shakespeare. That was absolute crap. The guys on TV were going on about how fast these two cars were going  They could not have been going to fast because there tires were spinning to the point that they were doing a burnout and sliding. Then after the "race" was over, JUDGES decided on a winner. Last time I checked, the winner of a race was the person to finish first of have the quickest time. Get a Porsche 911 and it would zip past any one of those piles of you-know-what. I really wanted my 8 minutes back.

The best car I've ever had for 'sliding' was my Mitsubishi Lancer. It was only front wheel drive, but you could get that thing sideways round a bend and hold it there as long as you didn't take the handbrake off.

I used to be a right rive arse, always sideways and a couple of 360's, the first was an accident, the second one was to see if i could do it again. 70MPH on a B road, whip the arse end, on with the handbrake, as soon as the rear faces the way you were going, off with the handbrake whip the steering to the opposite lock and drop into second and floor it. I got one hell of a rush and my arms were shaking with adrenaline for almost 30 minutes after.

I used to like pulling up into the town center and seeing all the boy-racers in there 1ltr Vauxhall Corsa's just sat talking to each other, dreaming of owning a car that doesn't scream if you do more than 50. I would go flying past and slide round the corner right infront of them. N00bs.
That car was awesome! I pi$$ed all over an integra type R on the M8 too. I was up his rear in the outside lane and he wouldn't pull over. When he did, i came along side him and he gave me the good ol w***er wave.

You could also take off on a hump bridge and guarantied it would always land on all 4's. It was weighted perfect for it. I took it rallying quite a lot too.

Oops, I'm babbling now

Nope. Those programs I showed screenshots of are intended for Big Boy computer horsepower. These are the reason I built my Hackintosh in the first place. Omnisphere is a beastly synthesizer that uses both DSP generation and sample-based PCM synthesis. My computer isn't a monster, and Omnisphere is known to bring a lot of powerful machines to their knees. I'm hoping the Schwartz will be with me. Until then I'm going to see if I can push my 2.67GHz CPU from the 3.33GHz I currently have it to 3.8 or 4GHz. I probably won't be able to do any serious upgrades to my machine until January, so overclocking is where I should focus my efforts.

Talk about a sore shoulder! I just wish I was as good with a rifle as I am with a shotgun. I blame my horrible vision. Though I can still manage a fairly good open-sight hit at 150 yards. Never used a scope. Always felt like I was cheating. lol

wow...thats cool

but I know how this stuff goes, if you want THE best, you gotta pay top dollah! - this is why with my other hobby photography, scrubs use photshop elements 8 approx £40, pro's use photoshop CS5 rrp £650, or CS5 extended ~£900. worst of it is most average users wont actually get more out of having the full creative suite 5...

Still it could be worse it could be the actual cameras and lenses, regular DSLR £300-1700 ish...Hasselblad HD-40 with one lens complete at least £13,000, typical setup £22,500+

Yeah, digital photography is just as insane as pro audio in money terms. A Canon 7D or an Olympus 4/3 DSLR (ie. that newly rumored E-5), with about three nice lenses and a decent flash unit would sate my photography urges pretty well. Hasselblads…oh man. I'd be happier with a nice Explorer than I would a Bugatti Veryon because it's more than I'd ever need. Being creative, or worse yet, wanting to be creative and lacking certain resources, is a financially and emotionally expensive characteristic. :(

Now would probably be a bad time to mention that I have had Adobe CS Master Collection, CS2 Master Collection, CS3 Master Collection, CS4 Master Collection, and CS5 Master Collection all sitting on my shelf at one point or another in the past several years. And yes, they've all been legit copies. I currently have CS3, CS4, and CS5 in my possession, but CS3 and CS4 will be finding new homes soon.

Nic Cage has actually always been a real Superman fan, when they made the new film a few years back he wanted the part. I might still watch it but we'll see. If they have a film called Losers its worth a good watch for action and some violence.

I don't know about the rest of you, but we're getting a nice "little" tropical storm right now. The eye of it should be right over me, in west Texas, early tomorrow morning. That's one heck of a storm to make it that far inland and still retain an eye.

Wonder how Harry is doing. I think they just had the worst of it not too long ago.

Luckily it never hit hurricane force, but it definitely snuck up on everyone. We're already bracing for flooding since this whole town is build in a valley and floods after even an inch of rain. They're expecting 7 to 8 inches tomorrow. Winds shouldn't be a problem they're saying. Shouldn't top 30mph. We'll see about that...

It's weird... When I lived down south, this was expected. But up here, it's really rare. I think I'm a good 8 hour drive from the coast, at least. And what's even crazier, is that this is the second time this year we've been hit by a tropical storm this far inland.

Tropical storm Hermine. Here's some news sites with stories. No one has much since it never hit hurricane strength.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/09/07/tropical.weather/index.html

http://www.foxnews.com/weather/2010/09/06/tropical-storm-hermine-forms-gulf/

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100907/ap_on_bi_ge/tropical_weather

They all basically say the same thing.

Here's a radar loop:
http://www.weather.com/weather/map/interactive/?zoom=6&lat=30&long=-98&interactiveMapLayer=radar&baseMap=h&animation=true

And this site has probably more than you want to know about it.

Evening fellas! I am alive and with power. Unfortunately, the storm did not blow down my fence. It is a pile and it is going to cost a bit to replace and insurance would have been a big helper. Oh well. The tropical storm did make it up the coast and the eye went right through Alice, TX (the city I work in) this morning about 7:30. The eye was west of us by about 20 miles. I was driving southeast and I hit that northeast wall that causes the most damage in my jetta this morning about 7:40 am. I got blown to the shoulder once and a transformer on a power pole blew up behind me. Other than that, it was just a typical spring like wind only it included rain. A few fences were blown down and a few trees were damaged too. We had 2-1/2" of rain in the gauge and a bunch of small limbs and twigs in the yard.

Connor turned 9 this weekend and it was just a busy weekend. I did clean off most of my workbench and determined that I need to cut my rolling 4' x 6' bench (Anna) down to a 2' x 8', non-rolling unit that will mount to the wall in the garage. This way the suburban can be pulled all the way into the garage and not have the back hatch door hit the garage door while both are open. This new bench will basically be a place where I can permanently mount my bench grinder, band saw, mini drill press, and allow a little work surface between each item. I do believe that I will make it an "L" shape and give myself a small area to wrench on things as needed. Above the bench, I will have a place to mount my '55 Chevy fender. I will finally be able to work on that project too.

I have been balls deep in work at the office and there seems to be no slowing down anytime soon. That is why the posting has been a little light.

Harry

Things are calm now. The winds hit last night around midnight, but didn't do any real damage. A few leaves blown off the trees and some of the smaller limbs broken out. No structural damage anywhere though. I don't think the winds topped 40mph and that's pretty much normal, everyday wind speeds here during the spring.

I'm not sure what the rain totals are, but my street did flood, and all the creeks swelled up to their limits. I think some of the lower areas are still flooded, but this town is used to it. We should dry up in a few days and be back to business as usual.

Glad to hear ya'll are safe and sound.

I got tired of burning up LEDs trying to figure out resistors and voltage. I took the no brainier approach and apart a cheap flashlight and used it to power and control the lights. I ran a pigtail from the light to the mass of LEDs. The flashlight will be zip tied to the frame. I would like to see if one of the keychain lights will be able to power the 5 LEDs, and if so, I will use that instead of the bulky unit. I will have to try it out tonight.
