N00b,
I'm planning on doing an HO scale, its big enough to enjoy but still small enough to be affordable. I am only in the parts collecting and design stage at the moment, but my son loves trains so it is mostly for him. I did some small 4x8 HO layouts in the past, but I want to go uber-detailed on this one.

rockEd Out can't wait to see what you do with the train set. I used to have a small ho scale train layout. on top of a plywood sheet. I used to love making the steam engine pop wheelies when I was a kid.:excited:

Awesome! When I was just a little tike half of my bedroom was an HO scale layout(my dad's). I remember playing under it, but don't remember playing with the train. When I was 10 or so we started a new one in the basement together. I worked on it until we moved when I was 18. After that I got into N scale and built a few small layouts. I'd love to build another one soon. Anyway, that's my model railroad life story.

Not to put an end to all of this tranny-love…wait a minute…yes it is! - anyone else following Photokina? Rather than posting tons of images and leaching off of others' bandwidth, I'll just post links. Most of the videos are actually from a photo expo in the UK about a week or so before Photokina.

Canon narfed up big time with their new 60D. Should have been an update to their Rebel line, not the successor to the 50D. :nono: Not that the new 60D is a lame camera, far from it, but downgrading the body from Magnesium to glass-filled Polycarbonate and dropping a bunch of controls wasn't the best thing to do. I was flirting with wanting to get a Canon when I upgrade from my Panasonic FZ-18, but now I'm not.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPNXYh6uvZg

Now Nikon…gimme more of that! The new D7000 is flipping awesome! Better than the D90 and in some ways better than the D300S. $1,200 for the body alone. Not cheap but not horrifying, either. That's $100 over Canon's new mid-range/upper-enthusiast camera. They took the opposite step that Canon did in that they've gone from a glass/Polycarb body to a Magnesium chassis. Video capability is better than the D300S (720/24p vs 1080/24p :D). This is what I want, paired with their 18-200mm ED VRII lens at first. I've alway preferred Canon's more organic and friendly body shapes to Nikon's angular "Gundam" look, but based on comparative features, I'll take the Gundam camera.

Panasonics new GH2 is pretty rad, too. 3D lens available, 1080p @ 30fps, 1080i @ 60fps, 16+MP resolution, articulating touch-LCD. I think that the Micro 4/3 format is quickly becoming more relevant than the standard 4/3 format.

I know it's all relative. $1,200 definitely isn't trivial (particularly when it's just the body we're talking about here, and when I add the lens I want to that, it bumps up to an even $2k), but considering that this is at the "low-end-almost-pro" level in Nikon's lineup, it's not too bad. It's a camera that should last me five years or more and will still have lots features that I'll be ready to explore as my skills improve. :nice:

Hurricane-force gusts for the last 24hrs in the Mat-Su valley. It's pretty calm at the moment. Officially 75MPH, but we had worse ones than that for the better part of the day. Power finally restored around 11PM last night. Trees down here, there, everywhere. One fell on a powerline outside my sister's place and it caught fire as they tried to restore power last night.

During our trek into Anchorage yesterday afternoon, the winds had blown so much dust into the air it looked like a massive fog bank between the Valley and Los Anchorage.

Minor earfkwake early this morning, too. 5.4 at about 4:06AM. A little better than the 4.9 we had a few days ago.

Alaska is home to several thousand earthquakes every year. These were just some of them. I just thought I'd add it to the excitement of last night's winds. Not that noteworthy, but if one this big happened in San Fransicko or any other So-Cal city it'd be the freaking headline on every major news outlet for 24 hours straight.

Winds like these aren't abnormal, either. Just a major nuisance. :nice:

2012 will happen like any other year. Just another new calendar, and when that one's done we'll be using one for 2013. However, if Roland Emmerich's "vision" of the natural aspect of the Apocalypse is real and John Cusack is going to save the world, then I'm switching to the Dark Side so fast! :bomb:

I hate TV, that is how it is going. Here is the rundown on things. I get home about 6:00, we eat dinner about 6:30-6:45. We finish up about 7:30 and the kids get their baths. Em and Jackson go to bed at 8:30 and Connor goes to bed at 9:00. I will watch TV between sending the youngest to bed and waiting to send Connor to bed. After Connor is down, I have usually found something I want to watch. Next thing I know, it is 10:00, my wife has finished her lesson for the evening and we discuss it. I think to myself that I am tired and I want go to be early. I do not go into the attic, and I end up watching TV again until midnight or later. The Big Lebowski was on the other night and I crawled in bed about 1:20. My projects are not getting farther along and I am becoming a TV junkie. DAMMIT!

I ordered the TamTech wheels and tires for the Datsun yesterday so progress will hopefully be made soon if I can get off of the couch.

I have the same problem Harry! I wait around for the kids to get to bed spend a bit of time with the mrs. Next thing I know it's 12:30 and I spent the last two hours staring at the idiot box.

So I have some new projects this year for Christmas. I'm making my daughter a wooden play kitchen equipped with working lights and sounds, just starting to draw the prints for this, and then my son want me to make him a Batcave, he is a huge Batman fan, so somehow I have to build a dome type structure then wire in lights and a fake working computer and lighted buttons and all that.

Bullitt

I know what you mean. The missus wants to get Em a wooden kitchen for Christmas this year. I would like to build her a doll house as well, but I think she is a little young right now. I wonder if she would mind if he house was 1/10 scale :rolling:

As far as the bat cave, paint his room black, throw some bats in it, and call it done! :D

Well, there are a few things to consider here. One, Brad Bird is directing (Iron Giant, Ratatouille, and was animation director of a mess of episodes of The Simpsons and King of the Hill) so it could be okay. Secondly, it's supposed to be a reboot with no continuity with the previous films (according to Collider.com, so that may be actually speculation), and supposedly it won't even be called Mission Impossible: IV.

I thought the first MI was so-so, and the second was so bad that I didn't even see the third. I'm not a Tom Cruise fan, but the two movies of his that I did like I thought he did a great job.

So which two TC movies do you like?

Watched Iron Man II last night. AWESOME!! Downey Jr. goes a little over board with the Narcissism but it actually works out in the end when the entire plot is revealed. But overal definitely one worth owning on Blu Ray!

Now the entire Star Wars Saga is coming in 3-D 2012. Lucas will never stop making $$$$$ off his Original trilogy! Hopefully they really work it over for some awesome 3D effects.

Ragnarok

1. Cruise movies I liked: Minority Report and The Last Samurai.
2. Iron Man 2 is on my buy list, but I won't get it for a while. Same story with Robin Hood.
3. SW in 3D, I saw that a few days ago, and today (yesterday?) there was an official announcement about Episode 1 for Feb 2012. I dunno. If they can do it without the goofy post-processing shlock that hindered The Clash of the Titans 3D effects, I guess it might work. I'm wondering when George is going to just completely re-do the whole series in CGI?

I have never, EVER, seen a cello painted like that. I find it kind of odd that the cello is the new fad/trend for unusual instruments being worked into modern music. What's even more odd is that it fits in so well. (It's not like someone trying to work a hurdy-gurdy into a hair-metal band.) Take Apocalyptica for instance. However, when you analyze it, the cello is probably the most versatile of all the orchestral string instruments. It can go into the ranges of the violin all the way down to the upper registers of a bass viol. Put a touch of distortion on it like Apocalyptica does an you can go from Shostakovich to Slayer instantly.

Just FYI, that's actually a double bass/upright bass whatever you like to call it. But you're definitely right, the cello is quite versatile. However, even though it can get up into the range of a violin, it can't practically get up to most of the higher notes played by violins in orchestral music. You might be able to do some of that using harmonics and what-not, but it still wouldn't be easy.

Just my 2 cents coming from a violinist with a cellist as a father.

(This is what I get for not actually watching the vid. :p) You're right, it's a bass. With a skull on the headstock. Warning: I'm about to get really pedantic. Regarding the cello, I said "can go into" the range of the violin, not completely cover its entire range. Ed: It is tough. The only way to ease the sting, if you haven't done it already, is to get another pup. Not that it erases the memory of your previous dog, but it it does divert some of that energy away into working with the new one.

Meanwhile, I feel the need to complain for a moment. I can barely walk, type, and brush my hair. I helped get a big honking cottonwood tree cut up and relocated (the one that fell over at my sister's place during our big wind storm a couple of weeks ago). My dad sawed it up and I bucked the log sections into a pile. Now my legs and hands barely function. It was a bit of an exertion at the time - not super difficult at all - but "the morning after" I'm almost incapacitated. And I've got a boatload of stuff to get done at work today, too. :(

Hey all. I did a quick run down through 4 pages and did not see my name come up, so I am glad I did not leave you hanging.

Shortly after my wife and I got to work yesterday, the daycare called my wife and said that our daughter fell and it was an emergency. Jenn went back to daycare and then called me to tell me what had happened to Em and that she would need stitches. We called her doctor and he said to bring her on in. I left work and met them at the doctor's office and this is what she looked like before:

...and after the durabond and a lolipop.

Not to change the subject, but Jack Black came to Beeville yesterday. He went to the McConnell Unit (prison) to interview an inmate that he will play in a feature film. The guy he interviewed was about 39, and shot his 80 yr old sweetie because "he couldn't get out of the relationship", stuffed her in her freezer, and the cops didn't find her body for nine months. This inmate used to be a funeral director. I am wondering if it will be another comedy, his first really dramatic role, or a touchy-feely story about a wonderful man that was wronged and hollywood is trying to get out. I am thinking the hollywood version.

edit:

I looked into it and the movie is going to be called Bernie

I'm going to go with that its going to be a BS attepmt at JB going dramatic but with a humours twist. It'll turn out as bad as him in KING KONG>:puke:

As I said it'll be a disaster.

Ragnarok
10-06-2010, 09:45 PM
I think JB has the capacity for serious acting, but the will to do so might be another story. I thought he did the "selfish director that gets in over his head" pretty well in Kong, and there was one pretty serious part in Nacho Libre that he did a pretty good job with. However…he was still inescapably Jack Black in both instances. The movie is listed as a comedy on IMDB's page for it, so no Shakespearean ambition for him, I guess. Sounds like it will be just another take on the Weekend at Bernie's formula with a slightly darker twist. Like Ed, I predict it will be a crapvalanche of Adam Sandler proportions.

Speaking of Shakespeare and impending cinematic malaise, there's an adaptation of The Tempest coming soon. It has all the sickeningly over-produced flash of a Baz Luhrmann musical. The cast looks pretty impressive at first (Hellen Mirren, Alfred Molina, Djimon Honsou) until I saw these two words: Russell Brand. If anyone deserved to be fed feet-first into a stump grinder for grotesque douchebaggery and belligerent assholery on film and in public it's him. I watch him for ten seconds and I feel I need a chemical bath to rinse the filth off every inch of my person.

On the subject of things that I find upsetting, what is it with "guys who am is metal" painting their fingernails black? I was watching a product demo of a guitar amp simulator from Native Instruments and the guy whose rig they're aping (the guy from Rammstein) is sporting black nails. The YT vid in question:

Did his dad not hug him enough as a kid or something? How does a man remain a man if he starts imitating feminine grooming habits? Is shouldering a purse and wearing a tampon next?

Probably because he ran out of room on his butt.

Joker beat me to it. When one gender does something that is appropriate only for the other it becomes at best annoying, at worst grotesque. Men and women are different: their roles in society, relationships and the biological imperative are different.

Anyone (I doubt there are any like this on this forum) that wants to make the argument "gender is not assigned to us by nature but is something we choose ourselves" needs to read "The Naked Ape: A Zoologist's Study of the Human Animal" by Desmond Morris.

OH, my crap - Skullcandy headphones suck hardcore! I just paid $43 for a pair of their "Hesh" headphones. Allegedly they have a frequency response of 18-20Khz, when it's doubtful they get beyond 1K. The freakish over-emphasis on bass these have makes you wonder if that's all the company thinks people value because everything else has been compromised. The stereo image is painfully compressed into a pipe that's almost mono. In fact, it's downright claustrophobia-inducing. The mids are so scooped that it sounds like whatever you're trying to listen to is being projected down a brick hallway from behind a corner. These were a stop-gap until I can afford a pair of AKG 702 - you know - REAL HEADPHONES. Now I feel like I've been had.

These aren't even toy-grade. I read all of these reviews about how great they are sound-wise, and I wonder if they're used to listening to everything reproduced on an Edison's Cylinder? They're plenty comfortable, and they fit my big head just fine. Just wished they sounded better. I used to own a pair of AKG K240 'phones. They were about an even $100 when I got them in 1998 (they were 600-ohm, so they should have had a headphone amp). They make a new version that's supposed to be really good. Huskies can be unpredictable. I think that's because the wolf is a little closer to the surface than most other dogs. We have a husky/shepherd mix, and all his unpredictability has been very entertaining because it hasn't been the dangerous type of spontaneity. He's very mild and patient around kids. Based on that and his size it kinda makes me wonder if he isn't actually a malamute/shepherd mix.

Next, the carrier is too henhouse to actually deliver it to me, so I have to wait for a little orangey-pink slip in my mailbox to show up, and my item won't be ready for me to pick up until the next day…maybe. Sweetwater are good guys, but this little flub disappoints me. :(

Oh well. It just means I have to be a little more patient, I guess. In the end it will still be okay. So next Saturday I'll probably be knee-deep in software installation. :excited:

"I find your lack of bass disturbing." :p

But in all seriousness, I'm never touching another Sideshow Toy product after the way they ****ed over my brother. His talent put them on the map with their first successful collectables and kept them afloat for years with abnormally accurate representations of licensed properties (Universal Monsters, Buffy, Monty Phython, Star Wars, James Bond, Marvel, etc.) until they started outsourcing all of their talent to sub- and sub-sub-contractrs. :nice: The way they withheld his contractually-ubligated royalties and "sculpted by" credits on the last items he did for them he should sue them for six figures.

Besides, I think Vader would probably use Sennheiser HD800 'phones.

They kind of have that Empire tech kind of look. And with his salary, I'm sure Baron Von Vaderham could afford three or four of them. They're only $1,400.

nah way too much silver, should be black accented with black and have more glowing red and yellow bits... to look like Darth Big Helmet's headphones anyway...

I think I'll stick with my Sony's They aint fancy and I'm sure most audiophiles would cringe at their very mention but they are cheap and they work well enough for my needs ^_^ (Sony MDR-XD200 Headphones if anyone really wants to know)

Those Sonys are probably just fine. What matters is they sound good, not what they cost. Those Skullduggery 'phones I got were $50 and they sucked in ways you cannot imagine. I'd have been better off just waiting and getting a pair of $30 Koss PortaPro headphones when I ordered my DAW software and audio interface from Amazon.

Now the AKG K702s I want for serious work are a lot more money than consumer-type headphones by a whole bunch, but at $300 to $350 they are not considered excessively priced when compared to other headphones it's competing against, like those $1,400 Sennheisers I posted. They don't sound $1,100 better than the AKGs I want, so why spend that much when three hundred will get me where I need to go. It's relative I guess.

rag, were they jvc marshmellow's or something similar? i can only use in ear or over ear, i hate the ipod style ones. im using some phillips ones atm that seem really good but i keep loosing the rubber buds that hold them in :(
i went to the sailing club today, from 9 till 5 i was helping out on a start sailing course. basicaly sat in a speed boat all day watching people sail...
im going to do the assistant instructor course soon, which means ill take people out, show them the ropes (no pun intended) and teach them the basics. also hoping to do my powerboat license soon...

They were full-sized over-the-ear types. I don't know the actual model of the ones I saw, but these look similar.

They're HA-RX300s. They actually look better than my Buttcandy units, and the build quality is probably as good or better at less than 1/3 the price. Lots of people say they sound good, but I will never trust another review on a consumer-grade set of headphones after my little experience.

EDIT: After seeing this video, I'm positive they're HA-RX300s that I saw at Fred Meyers. The packaging was the same.

I don't handle earbuds well, either. They always hurt my ear canals and never stay in place. They rely so heavily on how they sit in the ear canal that if they won't seat properly their sound quality is ruined.
