Well wish you the best of luck bud. Its certainly not easy to stay on task with it.
That's for sure. It's do or die time.
Keyboard news?
 I did already. :p From just a few posts back
My CME UF70 Classic First Impressions:
So far sookay. The keybed is actually as light as my old 'board, which is a little bit of a disappointment. Although when my hands decide to rebel on me that lighter action is going to be a Godsend. I'm thinking my next 'board will have a fully weighted action providing its recovery is quick. Korg and Kurzweil are the only companies I know of that have fast fully-weighted keys.

The nine faders are "pre-configured" to functions within Logic that I think I either need to reassign or just plain leave alone until I know what I'm doing.

Build quality is very solid, or so it would seem as I pound away on the keys. Baseplate of the chassis is steel, upper deck is black-anodized aluminum, endbells are glossy black styrene. The keys themselves are typical synth-keys, which means they're not matte textured, but they feel okay so far. The retailer I got this from, Sweetwater Sound, extends the warranty to 2 years, so I feel a bit more secure about this purchase than if I had done an online run and gun with the clowns at Musician's Friend/Guitar Center.

It's USB powered, so no need for an external PSU (although one does come with it). It also came with a USB cable, which was pretty nice 'cause I don't have any to spare at the moment. What's cool about that is now my MIDI plugs are completely free on my audio interface. I'll use them to connect to my old Korg TR-Rack synth, providing I can find room for it on this desk. The guitar and drum sounds on it are still going to be invaluable.

I need to tidy up around my computer desk and I'll take some better pictures than the ones I took this evening. In spite of it being 30 pounds and 48" of Chinanium it's pretty slick looking.
I'll have pics tonight. :chug:

FYI all, Oggy's court thread has been hidden at his request. Apparently the other side have been looking at it.
Indeed. In fact, I have removed the last few posts in this thread regarding the subject. If "they" can find the other thread, they'll find these comments just as easily. The best way we can help Og right now is to not say any more about it. :nice:

Look what postie brung.....
<censored for too much win>
Gotta say, I am mightily impressed with the mobo... it is a lovely thing!!

Although I was expecting a 'B3' sticker as per the Asus website:
http://uk.asus.com/websites/global/News/cqnNC5pGSATog5Pf/Table_02.jpg
Still, the box says B3, the retailer said B3, so I will check the bios when it is up and running. I'm sure it's fine, was just a little surprised at the lack of sticker. If you look at the asus site, they are VERY keen for you to be able to tell the new product from the old!

Anyway... let the build commence...... :excited:
Asus' boards always looked nice. Gigabyte's only started looking nice within the last couple of years. Before that it was weird combinations of blue, orange, green and white. Looked like a freaking salad. Keep us up on how it goes. :D

Okay, the next three posts are going to kill anyone's 56k connection (or low-end DSL for that matter).

First my keyboard pics.

Here's the thing still in its box. The keyboard itself is a little over 48", and the box it came it was about 56" long, and the box THAT came in is what you see here, which has to be another ten inches.
72853

I didn't get any of those "unboxing" pics because I didn't want to take the time. Plus I didn't have a lot of room to unpack it.

Next two pics are it in place in front of my computer. It is totally disorganized and cluttered.
72854
72855

Poor Optimus looks like he has a backache. The silver cable hanging down from the top of my tower sends both power and communication to/from the keyboard. The stuff directly above the keyboard amounts to my OG PS3 and PS2. To the right of the PS2 is a little silver box which is my audio and MIDI interface. On top of the PS2 is my old Korg TR-Rack synth module. I haven't hooked it up yet, but it's sitting in place for when I'm ready to hook it up. I have a MIDI cable missing and I need to track it down.

My "stand" amounts to a pair of big Sterilite containers I purchased to do some serious organization in my room. The way it worked out they're better suited for a keyboard pedestal. I'll rectify that as soon as I'm able.

As I plunk around with it, the action is actually very different from my old keyboard. Similar strength is required (which isn't much) but the way it throws is really unique. It's very nice and feels 10X more stable.

In transferring these pics from my camera tonight I found some other images I thought I might share. Those are next.

One of the unique things about this winter has been the winds. They have been hard and constant. The longest break we got from them was probably 3 weeks.

In these next pics which I took about the first of December, we had a thaw that melted the snow to ice, then it snowed some more, then the wind came and got super cold again. So what I have here is the parking lot outside our shop where tire tracks and footprints were preserved by being frozen snow fused with the ice after the winds blew the loose stuff off. I thought it was kinda interesting to look at.

Alright, I thought this would be a total of three posts, but it's going to be four.

Here's a large, Alaskan Yellow Cedar box (chest?) that I completed toward the end of January. It measures 18" long, 11" deep, and 10" high. It contains a partitioned tray made of the same material. The splines you see are Black Walnut. The box body has round-bottom mortises on the ends to act as grips, and the hinges are solid brass. The tray fit so well that it rode a cushion of air as it seated itself. The lid did too when the tray was in place. Probably the most precision thing I've ever made of this kind.

I believe it will be the last piece that I build for this particular client. She's developed an ocular problem and won't be able to do much carving and painting from here on out. :(

Please excuse the crumbs on the table. :o

Um, thanks? That tower's actually kind of a pain in the butt. When I disassembled it so I could paint the interior I must've stretched some part on the face of it because on the rare occasion I have to reposition it on my desk the face (which also has the front feet to the case) tries to come off. The aluminum door flappers are also kind of annoying. Looking forward to that new case. :o I'm hoping to get that pile of electronics better organized. I want to make a decent workstation desk/home theatre cabinet…thing…to make things not so disheveled and awkward. For example, that synth module is blocking the receiver to my monitor's remote, so I can't turn on the screen or change inputs between my PS3, PS2, computer, etc.

Lumberjacks now a days aren't what they used to be.
…clip…
In truth, it's because of the lumberjacks of the old days that the lumberjacks of today can't be that way. The forest giants were pillaged during the western expansion of the US and there hasn't been enough time for the pecker poles we harvest today to grow into the monsters we saw long ago.

In the Big Picture view of things, I'm not sure that I can say it was entirely an evil. I could certainly say it was a bad thing, but there was some good that came from it. Much of it was necessary for the burgeoning infrastructure and industry of 19th Century America. But I would say that too much was used. The concept of responsible husbandry was abandoned by far too many in those days. Unfortunately we have the shackles of over-regulation today where the intent of protecting our forests is a straw man to hide the real intent - control. We've traded one evil for another. "Culling the herd" in a lot of forests would prevent these multi-million acre wildfires. Trees that should be removed aren't and they become immensely dangerous, risking homes, lives, wildlife and the very forests the eco-maniacs claim they're protecting. There is a perfect medium in there. I'm ranting, so I'll stop.

I would guess that could be a big Douglas Fir. Even bigger ones than that were felled on a regular basis back then. National Geographic had a cover story on huge trees not too long ago. I didn't get a chance to read it, though.

that's a big tree, and a huge saw

i wonder what Rag could do with that much wood
I've made lumber from timber. It was an unpleasant experience. Leave that work to the mills.

Hey Leo, how's the 'puter build coming along?

It's done.... ^_^ I am writing this on it... and I gotta say... it's awesome!!
Pretty much spent the last 3 nights on it. Wednesday I got all the hardware in the case, then Thursday I connected it all and booted it up (huge sigh of relief when it actually booted!) and installed Windows, drivers, and software.
Tonight I have been transferring files, and tweaking! :nice:

http://img861.imageshack.us/img861/3038/zp1010905.jpg (http://img861.imageshack.us/i/zp1010905.jpg/)

To install the cooler, first I had to fix this back plate to the back of the mobo... :p
http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/298/zp1010907.jpg (http://img200.imageshack.us/i/zp1010907.jpg/)

Next was removing the protective cover from the CPU socket, removing the CPU from it's packaging, peeling off protective films, applying thermal compound, and worst of all.... closing the CPU lock down lever thingy! I'll admit there was a very high 'pucker-factor' there as I was completely unprepared for the amount of pressure required to lock the CPU down. I was convinced I was going to break something.
Anyway, was concentrating far too hard during all that to take any pics, so next is... install the cooler on top of the CPU, it screws down to the back plate. :nice:
Clipping the fan on was quite fiddly, and it looks perilously close to the dimm slots.... <_<
http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/3089/zp1010914.jpg (http://img853.imageshack.us/i/zp1010914.jpg/)

Luckily my two 4gb Vengance sticks fit in the primary slots...
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/1492/zp1010917.jpg (http://img14.imageshack.us/i/zp1010917.jpg/)

But the cooler fan is covering the first slot, so if I want more RAM later I will have to turn the cooler around!!! :banghead:
I wonder if it will work as well 'sucking' as it does 'blowing'??
I guess a plus point is that the cooler fan is drawing some air across the top of the memory heat-sinks! :)

http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/1219/zp1010921.jpg (http://img810.imageshack.us/i/zp1010921.jpg/)

And all connected up...
As a neat freak, it is bugging the hell out of me that I can't find a better way of routing the ATX power leads, the USB 3 back panel lead, and the front panel leads. But they don't seem to be long enough to tuck away anywhere. I won't see them (I can't even see the PC, where it lives under the table), but I'd still like a better solution. For now the best I can do is to keep them out of the path of the fans... ;)
http://img862.imageshack.us/img862/8744/zp1010929.jpg (http://img862.imageshack.us/i/zp1010929.jpg/)

http://img860.imageshack.us/img860/6288/zp1010940.jpg (http://img860.imageshack.us/i/zp1010940.jpg/)

Here is the back panel, I know that the 4x black usb's are 2.0, and that the 4x blue usb's are 3.0, but have no idea what the red ones are?? I know the bottom red one is esata, but the two above that look like usb's to me! Oh well, I'll figure it out....

Initial thoughts are...
- It is whisper quiet... the DVD drive is by far the loudest component, but only when it is reading at high speed (like when installing software). The 2 case fans, 1 cooler fan, and 1 psu fan seem to be doing a good job of keeping it all cool without making too much racket. (they are running at between 800-1500rpm, a long way from their 2500rpm max).

- At idle the CPU is at a very cool 28 degrees (82 american). Have seen it boost up to 40 (104) degrees under load, but I'm still very happy with that. Apparently after a number of 'on-off' cycles the thermal compound will improve in it's effectiveness, and should drop a few degrees.

- I haven't seen above 16% ram usage yet!! So the fan over the dimm slot is looking like it won't be a problem for a while yet.

- And it is lightning fast. Even running stock it flies through everything. The 5900rpm hdd is clearly the performance bottle neck. Even as a 6gb/s Sata III drive. I expect a huge improvement when I get an SSD in here.

Really, it is just up and running, I have a lot of tweaking and fine-tuning to do. But so far I'd have to say it was well worth the money spent, and the build was fun, and interesting. I can't see myself buying a ready-built PC again.
Honestly it's a piece of cake, so if any of you guys are considering it, I say go for it! :chug:

Pretty much spent the last 3 nights on it. Wednesday I got all the hardware in the case, then Thursday I connected it all and booted it up (huge sigh of relief when it actually booted!) and installed Windows… Hold it! You had me up until there. :nono:

You had a long post, so I won't quote any more of it for my reply.

I have a cooler on my system that runs two fans - one intake, one exhaust, with the heatsink fins between them. I'm not sure how efficient they really are. I think the way you have yours is probably the best way.

I suspect that those USB ports are red to indicate that they're just on a different bus.

The bottleneck with your HDs that you mentioned could be improved a little by moving up to 7,200RPM drives. 7,200RPM multi-terabyte drives are really spendy right now, though.

Once you get that sucka on its feet get some benchmarks run on that. For my curiosity, run Geekbench - it's the one common benchmark that about any OS can run. I'd like to see if you're able to get mid-teen-thousand to 20K ratings with that setup. :D

I had lulz today.

I noticed markings on the sidewalls of the "regular" 235/55/16 that I bought to replace the shagged tyres that were on my Supra when I got it inform me that they emit "coloured smoke"

That explains the funny redness that appears between the tread blocks after it's been laid up for a while. If I wasn't so old, I'd have to try them out.

I think thats based on statistics, i.e. more young lads buy corsa's and wreck them than buy landrovers and wreck them...plus insurers often rate things by performance stats, and whilst the landrover defender might be great off road, on the road its performance stats arent amazing.

V for vendetta is one of my favourite films of all time.
I stayed up pretty late watching it. Coming away from it, I have mixed feelings. Some of the things I think are pretty universal in the idea of self-governance and freedom by law. Others aspects, however, look like an attempt to parody American politics in terms of a 1940's European fascist analogy only placed in some kind of near-future Orwellian England, which I think is the wrong approach. In fact it was almost silly. It's one of those instances where I think the filmmakers themselves missed the point of their own argument and spend too much time grinding axes. A very similar conclusion I that arrived with Contact.

All that aside, I'm beginning to think that Hugo Weaving is one of my favorite actors in this day and age. He did an amazing job in this movie, even though we never see his face. His portrayal of V is sort of a strange-yet-compelling chimera of Christopher Nolan's Joker and Samuel Adams. He's an agent of chaos, but the chaos is not for its own sake or for his search for power. The intent is to destabilize a fascist dictatorship and give those seeking freedom an opportunity to change things: whether or not it's a change for the better is up to the people.

V's relationship with Natalie Portman's character was kind of interesting. It has kind of a Phantom of the Opera/Beauty and the Beast dynamic, and yet it's not really romantic. I quite liked the character

Speaking of which, NaPo didokay. She was less wooden-like than most roles I've seen her in, and her fake British accent wasn't as bad as Kevin Costner's was, but I still didn't like her. My guess is the Brothers Wachowski couldn't get Wynona Ryder. Keira Knightley would have been an infinitely better choice for this part; mainly because she can act when required to.

All in all, I think that if one can detach their social/political persuasions (if you're "that way" like me) from some of the overtly obvious and misguided attempts at political satire of the G.W. Bush era, it's a very good film. Language is a little strong, but I was surprised that the level of violence wasn't as high as I was expecting. (Not a disappointment, just an observation. Director McTeigue made up for that with Ninja Assassin. Holy frack!)

I pick it up at the end of the month so i should have plenty of pictures then, i couldn't say no, the inside is imaculate, and the outside just need a minimum amount of work. not bad for 1.250 when there selling for between 5-10k :D

13K is a great number. :nice: I'd suspect that if you're able to OC that turkey into the mid 4Ghz range you'll probably see Geekbench scores in the 17 to 20K mark. Which means that I hate you right now. It's okay, though. We need to get Bullitt to run that on his work machine. He's running a Xeon 6-core duallie (12-cores!), so we're talking probably 30K plus.

This may seem redundant or unnecessary, but I've been thinking about a different angle on my current computer. Most recently I wanted to take everything I have in my current case and drop it into another case that's roomier and certainly better looking. I've been rethinking that. A while ago I was talking in terms of reducing the size of my computer, and here's one possible way I could do that…

I'd keep the CPU, memory, HDs, GPU and PSU that I have already, but go ahead and get an X58 ATX motherboard, in this case an Asus Rampage III Gene.
72969
There aren't many to choose from and the Asus is clearly the best one.

Why? Well this would allow me to facilitate the usage of a much smaller case. The only candidate I have that I like the looks of would be the Lian Li PC-V354B…
72970

One I would have liked to consider would have been the NZXT Rogue, but they've been out of production for about a year. :nono: (It would appear that ADK has them in stock, but it's hard to really know.) Another alternative would be to build one (yeah, I've mentioned that before) and I don't know that I have the time for that. At the same time, I wouldn't rule it out. I have an aluminum+HDPE-based project coming up and it might give me some practice before I take on the "big one."

The Lian Li is 9.65"W x 13.60"H x 16.54"D with a weight of 9lbs "unladen", and my current Thermaltake Armor+ MX VH8000BWS is 9.45"W x 21.06"H x 19.30"D and weighs 23lbs empty. I'm hoping I can use the same HSF that I currently have. Based on the width of the Lian Li, I shouldn't have a problem (I hope).

Anyway this changeover would cost about $240 for the motherboard and another $150 for the case, so probably talking $450 after shipping. Not sure it's an effective use of my funds, but it's something I've been thinking about. I'd also have to completely re-do my Hackintosh bootloader setup due to the different motherboard.

If I did have my heart set on building a case, I could try to do something similar to the Lian Li, but format it for a standard ATX motherboard. This way I wouldn't have the cost of a new motherboard (or a new bootloader scheme to dink around with) and the money would go entirely into a case. I want it as compact as possible in regard to height and depth. That means an increase in width, which is just fine. I'll fart around in Illustrator and see what I can come up with.

I can't say I made the connection between the totalitarian Orwellian government and the Bush reign, but I did not have to think about the Bushes, and chose not to... But yes, it is a bit silly if you try to transpose it into real life. I take it for the world that is constructed for the story to be played in and only generalise parallels to reality if there is a reference that fits the metaphor at the given time of that particular watching.

But Hugo is o for orsome.

I agree. That's definitely the best way to watch it. :chug: Leave one's preconceptions (or in my case ones I assume the filmmakers might try to be making) and appreciate it as something separate from current events. One of the things I appreciated about it was that, unlike the Wachowskis previous work, it wasn't filled with late-night frat-house stoner philosophizing and Kung-Fu Jesuses. **cough-MATRIX-cough** The Machine Gun Messiah theme in action movies is getting old. :p

This may seem redundant or unnecessary, but I've been thinking about a different angle on my current computer. Most recently I wanted to take everything I have in my current case and drop it into another case that's roomier and certainly better looking. I've been rethinking that. A while ago I was talking in terms of reducing the size of my computer, and here's one possible way I could do that

The only candidate I have that I like the looks of would be the Lian Li PC-V354B

There is no doubt that Lian Li kit is right up there, and that is a great looking case.

If I were planning a microATX build I'd be thinking about the Fractal Design 'Define Mini'.... a great looking case imo. And only 210 x 395 x 490mm (W x H x D). Which is 8.2" x 15.5" x 19.3, so a little bigger, and more conventional in proportion, but still dinky!
I would like to upgrade my case to their R3 (which basically looks the same as the Mini, only bigger) in the future, I'm a big fan of their designs.

It's a bit unconventional in design though, and if you are planning on running a 1200w psu like I do, it gets a bit cramped in there.
Other than that it rocks, easy installation of all hardware.
The only thing I missed was a "slide out" motherboard mounting plate, but I got around that anyways :)

By the way, I need some Electrical wire/cable that can handle a lot of temperature, minimum 1.5 square millimetres.
The wires/cables that run to the front coil that supplies the two front cylinders on my awesome Ford Scorpio Granada 2000 dohc 16v are crispy and about to fall apart.
I get rpm-cuts ever so often and I think it's due to the wires to the coil that loose connection sometimes.
The Wires that normally go to the coil is protected with some plastic "ducting" and haven't stood up to the tests of time either.

It gets close to 100c under there, and is there some cables that is up to the task? It needs to be a little flexible also.

Here's a picture of the car for reference :p

Yeah, they are expensive but the build quality is second to none, i can tell you that.
I had a older Lian Li case before, but that burnt down along with everything else.

I've looked at Fractal's stuff before, and I don't know what it is but I can't get into them. It's not that they're unattractive, but they're almost too sedate. One of the things I like about the Lian Li case I was considering is it's understated without being too boring. The all-aluminum construction is also a big plus for me. I may need to move it in a huff and I don't want to try to lug a huge, unwieldy steel and plastic case like I already have

I was even considering their upcoming PC-U6 "conch shell" case (http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/product06.php?pr_index=573&cl_index=1&sc_index=25&ss_index=62&g=spec). Guys that hate on it call it The Snail. Their old case like this was pretty poorly designed, but this has been scaled down for ATX and Mini-ITX motherboards only. It's also featuring Corsair-style rubber grommets for cleaner behind-the-tray cable management. The big downside to it, other than the unconventional love-it-or-hate-it design, is the lack of HD space. 3 HDs is enough for some, but I'd like room for more than that if I could do it. The other Lian Li case I mentioned earlier has room for 7 3.5" HDs plus two 2.5" HDs.

I still haven't decided what I'm going to do. If I build my own, I've got things to consider like anodizing or powder-coating services, sourcing certain case parts (Mountain Mods is a good place to start in that regard), and a few other things. It's not the most cost-effective way to go. In fact, the most cost-effective thing I could do is nothing. One of the more compact standard ATX cases I've seen that would fit what I already have is the Bitfenix Survivor, but when they first started showing it off they were talking in terms of rubberized exterior parts, and what they actually did was use "rubber-feeling" paint on plastic. Blech. When they say rubberized in my head I was thinking rubber bumper extrusions that would actually be able to take an impact or something. Paint that kinda feels like rubber is sucktacular if considered a "feature" because there's nothing about it that's rugged.

As usual I'm pretty indecisive about all of it. http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/emo/emo-conflicted.gif

That is a pretty cool case. It's a little big for my needs, though. I'm thinking in terms of reducing my computer size. :p

As long as the area where the motherboard bolts in has a hole to get at the HSF backplate, a non-removable tray isn't an issue for the most part. My current case has neither, and it was hard to work on when I built it. If I want to change the CPU I have to take the entire thing apart just to get to the backplate, so one thought I had was just scrapping that case for something else if I was going to go to all the trouble of taking it apart to that extreme.

I have a 1000W PSU, which is about the same size as a lot of 1200W units are. I've about decided that it's far more power than I ever use. I need to get one of those Kill-a-Watt dealies and see how much juice my machine is really sucking down and probably down-grade to something of lower wattage when I start doing upgrades or mods to this rig. One project I was toying with I figured all I needed was 450W because it would be using a low-end GPU, 2.5" HDs and the only strenuous thing I'd do is OC the CPUs.

As it is, my current setup is only overclocking a 2.67GHz CPU to 3.34GHz and powering a single GTX285 graphics card. I'll bet that a 500W PSU would be plenty. If I was cranking that processor up to 4GHz and running triple-SLi, 1000W might still be overkill. Macs don't run SLi or Crossfire configurations of any kind so there's no reason to have more than one GPU in my machine anyway.

Ragnarok, It's quite tall yes, but it isn't that much deep cause of the side mounted optical drive solution. The tallness isn't that much significant standing into the wall.
But If you're going smaller, you have many good Lian Li options :nice:

Last weekend I watched THe NExt THree Days with Russel Crowe and Elizabeth Banks. I was actually pleasantly surprised by Bank's acting ability in a dramatic role. All I have ever seen her in is comedies. Crowe was his typical Crowe self but all in all it was a really decent flick. Anyone that lives in Pittsburgh or is familiar with the area will recognize a bunch of landmarks. The concept of the movie was really good and the plot held it together, no wierd twist or WTF? moments.

I read some reviews on it and they were pretty mixed. I happen to like Crowe most of the time, but this one didn't pique my interest. I've seen enough harrowing nail-biters that they kind of wear on me.

Unrelated but also related, I was inspecting my shoes recently, and in spite of them being fairly comfortable and well-made, they're finally coming apart. I finally found the type I wanted in my size (last ones Amazon had) and I have them plus a couple of 1/4" TRS cables and five movies: Flight of Dragons, Total Recall, both Conan films in one set, and huge-budget Parts: The Clonus Horror ripoff The Island. I've only seen Total Recall on TV, and then it was only part of it. Maybe those Arnold musicals had a profound effect on me. I actually have a ton of sci-fi and action movies sitting in my "Save for Later" list and I just pull stuff out as I'm able. About The Island, it's a region-free release, which is kinda weird. Supposedly (?) it didn't get a US BluRay release, but this edition is non-locked. I worry that it might be PAL instead of NTSC, though. If it is, I won't even open it and just send it back.

Regarding gnarly stuff, I once restored an old Tamiya Fox that my little bro bought from someone. YARR! I think IT was used for an ash tray and stored in a garage where vehicles ran with the door down. :nono: You guys' stories sound far, far worse, though. On another topic... anyone considering buying any silicone chips, computer upgrades, laptops, or anything else that is made in Japan, should get in there quick... supply is going to more or less cease for at least a couple of weeks as factories prepare themselves for power shortages. We can expect prices of anything that contains a screen or a chip to rocket. Even those made elsewhere in the world will see increased demand as a result of a shortage of supply from Japan.
But, aside from the relatively insignificant practicalities of supply-and-demand economics, let's continue to pray for all those affected by that terrible tradegy.

The Conan set I ordered is probably the same as the one you saw at Walmart. I think it was $11 at Amazon. I don't go to Walmart. It's an intensely personal decision. Mainly 'cause it's a pain in the *** to go in there.

I've never seen it but always kinda wanted to. I've seen a lot of the groan-inducing low-budget "sword and sandal" epics from Europe (ie. Steve Reeves, Lou Ferrigno, etc.), so I kinda know what I'm in for. I understand that Barbarian was a far better-er movie than Destroyer was. I'll be honest, I've never heard of him, but I did a quick search and sounds like the guy had some troubles in his life. :( It's very sad when people let things like this escalate and then do something so desperate that there is no way to make things better. The tragedy on top of this is the effect this will have on his family and fans. No man is an island. Every action we make has a direct or indirect consequence on everyone around us.

I read last night that the co-founder of Korg musical instruments also passed away this weekend.

Off-topic, I've decided that my self-built controller project is back on. This is both good and bad. Good because things are still coming together for it. Bad because of why I've decided to resuscitate it. Last night I was plunking around on my newly-purchased controller and noticed that the A# below middle-C has gone flabby. It's like the spring that brings the key back up has either stretched or let loose. I'm sorely tempted to open it up and see if it's a replaceable thing. What it signifies to me is that this thing may not last me in a long-term scenario, ergo me returning to the idea of building my own rig from zero. It's really disappointing. I can get around that key for the most part, and as far as triggering a note it seems to be normal, but it's distracting when I'm trying to do something and then I run into Mr. Mush. Kinda like biting into a stale Cheerio. It's annoying.

And yes, Joker, probably.

Replacing it will be a betch and a half. Technically, it's all under warranty, but reboxing this big sumbich and sending it back to wait for a new one will be the Mother of All Hemorrhoids. Unless there's catastrophic failure (which I'm no longer ruling out after this), I'm going to try to live with it and/or try to remedy it myself. It's one of three things:

Stretched return spring.
Return spring has come off.
Binding up on the "axle" the key swings on.

If this was a $2,000+ instrument I wouldn't hesitate for an instant to ship it back. This is the same brand I was considering for my keybed on my big controller, and now (angrily) I'm reconsidering that. I may have to rip n' strip an expensive $1,500 Kurzweil SP3X stage piano as an alternative. Big problem there is where do I put the "guts" of the instrument in my controller? Rag, its not bad, and you can really fast forward the part and not miss any continuity, it was actually thrown in the Barbarian movie in a tip of the hat to the original Conan stories. That funky barbarian was getting all over Cimeria! So don't let it put you off, the second movie Destroyer doesn't have any.

I'll tolerate cussin' to a point. Blasphemes and seriously vulgar stuff I avoid as much as possible. Nudity on film I don't dig at all. It's not some sexually repressive upbringing that I had. Call it old fashioned. :nice: Generally speaking, there is nothing on this Earth more beautiful than a naked woman. The problem is I understand my own nature and and objectifying women (which is natural for a man to do, really) isn't the best way for a man to view women. It leads to dehumanizing her and making her the sexual equivalent of a hamburger. Nakedness is not something to be ashamed of, but it's to be guarded as something sacred. It's all an issue of context. A woman being nude and/or involved in sexual activities in front of an audience is exploiting herself. And in my mind if she's exploiting herself and I'm audience to that, then I'm facilitating that exploitation. Long story short, if I'm going to ogle teh nekkid wimminz it had better be my wife. I'm ranting and probably not making much of a point, so I'll stop. :p

Once I run into it I'll know where to hit the FF button next time. I know Robocop had a flash that went by pretty quickly. (The locker room scene, I think.) It was "National Geographic time" as far as I was concerned. (In other words, not that interesting. :p) I had the subtitles running and it covered part of her up anyway. The fact that it was directed by Paul Verhoeven shocks me that smut wasn't dripping down the walls.

Speaking of Robocop, that was a very fascinating film in its own way. The "future advertisements" ranged from silly to insipid so I ignored them. If they'd cut those out they would have had more room for more violence. :lolbeat: The movie itself was an interesting take-off of the theme from Frankenstein. The wrinkle was he was simultaneously the Monster and the Hero, which was a little different. Murphy's death was both freakish and tragic, and his reanimation as Robocop was tragic as well. He lost his family after he was killed, and when he came back he couldn't quite identify the loss but knew it was there. It was an effective angle to bring a genuine sympathy for the character. In fact his removal of his headpiece was very symbolic of both his vulnerability and a renewed sense of his own humanity. I'm rather curious what happens to his partner after she got shot up by That 70's Show guy. Man, was I glad to see that guy get it! I hate that dude.

We're in the same boat, except we've been getting a lot more sun than that (livin' farther down the compass than you guys). Breakup is underway and the snow is going pretty quickly. It's probably going to be a fairly dry breakup, too, which is fine with me. Less flooding is always a good thing. :D

Wow Rag! you really look at Robocop in a deep way.

I just seen the movie as a dude in a cool suit lol, i need to get into them more maybe.

Maybe I look too deeply at movies like this? I dunno. I try to look at the story and characters as fully as I can, otherwise when I watch something, and just put my brain in neutral, it's kind of meaningless to me.

I'd definitely say that it's doubtful that the filmmakers were trying to make some kind of deep philosophical statement (beyond the unfairly sharp elbow into the ribs of American consumerism with those commercial satires). Another angle might be that Murphy was unable to rest in peace because of some battle of egos within the top echelon of the company that created "the new him." Dr. Frankenstein, in this case, was simply an opportunist that got his chance when his rival botched his proposal for a 24/7-always-on walking police tank thing - a machine that was part a much larger scheme to sell weaponry to the military. And why did they need a constant patrol? To rid the area of crime so they could get some massive building project completed. It would have been one of those corporate projects that would have benefitted a large number of people, and to make money on that is okay providing greed and oppression were not the motivators. So now we get a large, potentially soul-less corporation (the real monster?) AND general population that is benefitting from the torture of man-once-dead.

Again, maybe I'm looking at something that isn't there. What the crap.

That is a picture of the sunset taken around 06:30pm, not all the sun we get :nice:
The sun is quite high in the sky during midday now, at least in comparison to 21st december when the sun is at its lowest point of the year :)
We have no breakups over here, no glaciers, or icebergs to worry about, only a mild spring flood.
If it can be called a flood, more like a heavy "drizzle" :p
That's what I like about this part of the country.

33% of my income goes to taxes. The yearly road tax for a car newer than 30 years is 505usd, sales tax is 25% on all saleable items, 25% import taxes on all goods bought abroad, I could go on. :shoot:

Speaking of butthurt, what is it with the USPS? I ordered my shoes and a couple of other things and had it sent USPS Priority because it was half 2nd Day. Tracking numbers don't exist. Like usual, they'll tell me I've received the items after I've received the items. I also had a video game OST I ordered direct from Squaresoft's US operations. I ordered it in late Febtober, and right now it's sitting in Washington…SINCE THE 10TH…aging like cheese in a pile of parcels that someone doesn't care to put on a plane and deliver to their waiting owners. Just got my hands on another time vampire - Sketchup. I'm using it to design a variation of the Bosch "Gravity Rise Stand" for keyboard usage. It's that or make a 1/10th scale model out of 1/4" plywood. The big issue has to do with all of the wild angles and pivoting parts. I spent two hours this morning trying to work with it on Illustrator and that's not a good place to do mechanical design (unless there are NO moving parts, in which case it's fine).

Makin' stuff asplode is always a bonus. I'm not sure how I'd adapt the Lego components to "real world" measurements, particularly for something as big as my controller. But nuts to that - I'm downloading it anyway. :p I might find other uses for it.

Here's what the two Bosch Gravity Rise tool stands look like.

T4B (for miter saws)…
Stand by itself: 73129
Stand with miter saw and folded up: 73133

TS2000 (for compact table saws)…
Stand by itself: 73130
Stand with tool: 73131
Stand folded up: 73132

We have a Bosch 10" compound miter saw with the T4B stand, so I'm able to take direct measurements off it. Attempting to adapt this general design idea to a keyboard stand has proved really difficult for a lot of reasons. One, the keyboard will sit closer to the ground than the tools do (I want 28" to the key tops) so that requires the angle of the "X" part to be less than 45. The other is the keyboard is quite long (just shy of 58" according to my drawings) in comparison to the

EDIT: (Left off the last part of my statement. WTH?)

…length of the miter saw and the "bed" it rests on.

Hey Ed, this might be some good news regarding the next Ghost Rider flick…

“We basically said, we want to do it, [would] absolutely love to do it, but it’s gotta be 100% different from the first movie, everything, except for Nic. We want the character to look different, feel different, sound different. The backstory of the character’s different, the origin of the story is expanded upon in ways that the first movie didn’t hint at, at all. The location’s different, the whole cast is different; the only thing that’s the same is Nic…It’s pretty much a reboot, only with the same actor, which makes it: a requel. Or a seboot, I can’t decide which one I like better.”

what do you fellas think? elaborate plan to make me feel like an ***hole? the ex is jealous of the new gf? or true? oh and the mutual freind also stated the ex got knocked up by her current bf. im trying to peice together this clusterf**ck of a story. im actually getting a laugh out of it.
