Rag, an Alaskan earth quake actually made the news! WOW!

I definitely felt it, but it didn't seem that big. Not too far away (within 50 miles south of Anchorage, which puts it nearly 100mi from me), with a magnitude of 5.2 or something. I'm shocked it got reported at all. If this same quake had hit San Franfagsco it would be non-stop pants-wetting and mascara streaking from the local parade walkers because some Precious Moments figurines got jostled in their Fun Dungeon. Inexplicably, white, middle-class, non-liberal, heterosexual men would be blamed.

By the way, FRIDAY is NO MORE!!! :excited: Rebecca Black YANKS 'Friday' Off YouTube (http://www.tmz.com/2011/06/16/rebecca-black-friday-song-youtube-copyright-music-video-official)

I just wanted to say something. Do you know that the new cars in Bulgaria cost 2 or 3 times more than the cars in Usa. Why?

My theory would depend on the new car's country of origin. If you're talking cars made in Europe, then I'd guess unreasonable tariffs (taxes) that the Bulgarian government puts on each vehicle that's sold. Of course, I don't know what the EU laws say about trade between countries in Europe, if there are taxes for importation as well, or if there's free commerce between European countries (ie. between Germany and Bulgaria). Overtaxation is a serious problem world-wide. It could also be dealers colluding and gouging the consumer. I really don't know.

If we're talking cars made outside of Europe, such as USA, Japan, Korea, etc., then add the complications of currency conversion.

I'd wager that most of, if not all of, the B&W pics were from Beatles or some other "invasion" band concerts in Englandisherham. None of the girls look American, and I base that on not just facial morphological characteristics, but also the hair-styles and clothes. I mean, come on, the pic of the single close-up looks like Edward Mulhare in drag. According to the filename of the color pic it's actually from some appearance from David Beckham. Ick. Sad really, 'cause the girl in glasses in the foreground there is pretty cute and I would hope that she'd be above such hysteria. :p

The last one is a Screamapillar from an episode of The Simpsons. Homer puts a meditation fountain-thingy in the back yard and they discover this horrid little bug living in there that's shrieking 24/7.

Shockwave, designed and animated by Industrial Light and Magic, rises about 40 virtual feet and has more than 2,000 moving digital pieces. “He doesn’t stand around and talk,” Mr. Farrar said. “He just fights.” Shockwave took the animators about 30 weeks to build before he was ready to be added to a shot.

“The eyes are critical and the mouth is critical,” he said. “If you can’t read those, you can’t understand what the character is doing or portraying. You have to read Shockwave through just the emotions of the face, almost like a silent-era movie star.” For this reason Mr. Farrar and his team sought to make

What this ultimately means is he's a paper tiger. If he was the Mr. Bad they've been hyping him to be, he'd be given at least a few lines. If you watch one of the more recent TV spots, you'll see Shocky-poo getting eviscerated by Optimus, so I guess this just confirms his lack of real weight in the story.

I actually know who the real villain in the movie is, and it ISN'T Megatron.

I am seriously looking forward to the hobbit!
Anyone else?

I have been looking forward to a Hobbit movie since I first saw Rankin and Bass' cartoon version in the 70s. And now since Jackson is at the helm, my excitement has grown ten fold. The Hobbit is bt far my favorite Tolkien story. The only thing I hope with the second Hobbit flick they don't introduce all sorts of non-book characters to carry the film.

Ragnarok
06-24-2011, 09:24 AM
I know that one "non Canon" character has already been cast. Evangeline Lily (who?!?) will be playing "Tauriel," (http://thehobbitmovieblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/jackson-announces-two-more-cast-members.html) an elf of the Woodland Realm. "Tauriel?" Sounds like she might be part cow maybe? I dunno.

I doubt that, though. --> 75685 (Taken from the link above.) [EDIT - Decided pic was a little too revealing. Where the hell has modesty gone?]

Her character is probably to flesh-out the number of Woodies because I'm not sure how many are identified in the book. There's the king, of course, but I don't remember any other names. Legolas will be in it, too.

Also, the voice for Smaug was cast a while ago, it appears. http://thehobbitmovieblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/cumberbatchs-hobbit-roles-revealed.html I have no idea who this guy is (English Englanders probably do) or what he sounds like, so I can't comment on whether or not this was a good move.

I think that if there was a streak of true ambitious insanity in Jackson, he'd tackle The Silmarillion. I'm still pretty excited about The Hobbit.

The Stray Cat
06-24-2011, 09:55 AM
Yes I saw she was having a part, as you said I'm thinking it might be to flesh out the woodland realm, there were no names given to any of them in the book if I recall. They had titles like jailor and that but not names.

As far as the Silmarillion, that would be an undertaking of epic proportions. However it would be incredible! Just mere scope of the stories underlying the main story could make for 4-5 films. I've read this book 3 times and it is a great story, hard to read though even after the first time.

FunkyHunk
06-24-2011, 03:44 PM
I've read the hobbit and the ring books 7 or 8 times now, andI never get tired of the series. I still like the hobbit the best.
I also exclusively read them in english, because the norwegian translations is stupid. They even translated the names of characters and places into norwegian :puke:

Ragnarok
06-24-2011, 03:53 PM
That's pretty strange because some of them already sound Scandinavian. Scandinavianizing Nordic-sounding people and places would make things absolutely gibberish. Or…maybe more like dividing by zero. Ignoring the Gaelic, Celtic, Anglo and Saxon influences (those last two were actually Germanic transplants) one of the main plot points of The Hobbit is right out of The Volsung saga (bigassed, bad-tempered dragon in a mountain, and they gots to get hims out). LotR: Fellowship… has four discs, but I'd count it as one "volume") it'd be quite a few less. I might do that later today just for the dang of it. I'm with Funky - I'd definitely check on that USB board. First thing is I'd remove it and see if it continued to give you problems. If it doesn't, then reinstall the board and check the settings to see if there's something like "wake on USB activity" that has been turned on.

I just went through my stuff, and it's hard to quantify accurately.

I have 188 DVD "volumes." An example of what may make this number a "depends on how you count it" thing would be my MST3K sets. Each disc is a different movie, but four come in each volume, and none of these are available for individual sale, so I really can't count each set as four DVDs. If I counted all of the individual discs I have…nevermind. Let's just say I'm not going to. :p

DVD - 188 (including the ones I have on the way from Amazon). This wasn't as many as I originally thought. The fact I have lots of TV shows and mult-disc sets makes my library look bigger than it is. I'm going to guess the number of discs is somewhere around 400+.
BluRay - 55.
PS1 Games - 14 (plus two more via PSN).
PS2 Games - 14.
PS3 Games - 12 (includes the one I have on the way from Amazon, plus six more via PSN).
Gamecube Games - 3.

Just read a review of TF: DERP. You know, for being so critical and cynical, and finding so much fault I wonder why the reviewer still gave it such a high rating?

http://collider.com/transformers-3-dark-moon-review/99230/

Here's the last paragraph, and it's certainly the least negative one in the whole review…
You have to grind through 90 minutes of tedium to get to the chewy, chocolate-y center of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. There are moments where the jokes work and the earlier action scenes are kind of cool, but the movie’s sole purpose is to drive you to the spectacle at the end of the 3D rainbow. It’s the rare film I can point to and say “If you’re going to see it, see it in 3D” because the silliness of the technology is perfectly matched to the silliness of the movies that Michael Bay makes. Swerving wildly between the insultingly stupid the ironically idiotic, Dark of the Moon is Bay at his worst and at his best.

Rating: B-

The review brings up some stuff I definitely anticipated:

Sam continuing to be the petulant little douchemissile he's always been.
His girlfriend, regardless of who she is, is still just a piece of sex-meat.
Stupid comic relief. Twins are gone, but they've been replaced by Wheelie and Brains. Dunno what Brains is about, but I hated Wheelie infinitely more than Skids and Mudflap.
Insipid human element. I think this is more the fault of the writer and casting departments than the director.

I'm still seeing it, hopefully in another week or three. The new theater up here in the valley opened up in Mayl and it's reportedly really nice. I don't think I'll see it in 3D. If I see it more than once I will, but not my first time. I want to see the movie "for what it is" first and worry about gimmickry later. :chug:

Oggy, here's a follow-up on that RE game…
http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/29/game-retailers-go-back-and-forth-on-resident-evil-mercenaries-3/
Notable stuff: Overseas, British retailer HMV has ceased taking trades for the title -- and EB Games Australia has apparently stopped stocking the game altogether. A representative on the EB Games Facebook group explained, "If you would like to purchase it with us then of course we will sell it to you, it will be a case of an order with our store." They added, "We made the tough decision to remove it from sale because we have everybody's best interests in mind, and don't feel its fair that you guys would be paying $60 for what is essentially a one use game."

It means this is a disposable game. Once you've completed it, kaput. You'd have to buy a new copy of the game. The reviews of it are really bad, so not only is it disposable, it's crap.

The first response to the article pretty well sums it up;
Capcom Exec: "Our image isn't bad enough. We need fresh ideas. NOW!"

Capcom programmer: "I have one................"

And thus, history is made.

It'd be one thing if the game was groundbreaking and awesome, but since it's neither it compels one to ignore it entirely.

Arkham Asylum does not count as near a police station...or at least in terms of the ethics of the inmates have nothing to do with the police/law...

Speaking of which, and while were on games I'm getting back into DC universe Online - its a sub based game yes but as SOE got hacked they've given everyone 45 days free on any game you previously subscribed to so I get DCUO and star wars galaxies for free for 45 days...or the next 40 or so having used a few

I quit in January due to crappy "visual delay" problems, i.e. the game runs smooth and high frame rates with no discernable lag yet enemies aren't where they appear on your screen and still appear to be fighting long after giving up loot and xp which happens on death, in January I experienced being killed(or K.O'ed as the game puts it) with no visible enemies on screen and taking damage for several minutes after being returned to life - this problem is greatly reduced nowadays, however I still get some problems in that I now kill an enemy and get loot and xp while its at 10% hp... and in 4 man 'alerts' (like dungeons/5 mans in World of warcrack) I see boss loot at 50% boss hp...D'oh!

I thought I read Galaxies was done, or is it closing down soon?

It's all about the money now. Video games used to be fun and for kids really, now it's just a huge money market.

In reality video games have always been about money. What's going on now is a strategy to keep people paying for a game long after they've purchased it. It's a similar approach what drug dealers do to their users.

Ke$ha taught me to be myself and not care what anyone else thinks.

Bruno Mars taught me to do anything for that one person I love.

Eminem taught me that life is hard but you can make it through.

Taylor Swift taught me not every girl is going to treat me right.

Michael Jackson taught me to always love the people around me.

Music taught me how to live.

most importantly, Rebecca Black taught me the days of the week

The Beatles taught me to let it be.
Bob Marley taught me it's OK to shoot the sheriff as long as you don't shoot the deputy.
The Eagles taught me to take it easy.

The Doobie Brothers taught me Jesus is just all right.

My little brother is coming up from Anchorage to see TF3 with me next Saturday at the valley's new theater. He wants to see it in 3D. I really don't want to for a couple of reasons. One, I'm a little afraid it could be distracting or disorienting because I've never been to see a 3D flick. And two, I already wear glasses (I'm very, very nearsighted) and I have no idea if I'll be able to watch the movie and see very clearly what's going on without my specs.

Well I can alleviate one problem, I wear glasses and the 3d glasses you get at the cinema are designed to fit over existing glasses, so unless your glasses are really massive or sit way out from your face you should be fine.

Plus odds are you'll get the latest 3D films advertised in 3D before the film(why not, its the right kind of projector anyway) so you can get used to it.

I suggest you hang on to the 3D glasses though, UK cinemas have a habit of charging a couple of quid(£) for a set, then providing bins to throw them into afterwards...so they can charge you for another pair next time... <_<

Yeah that side of things is kind of worrying...

I think you may still be ok with the glasses fitting though rag, I've just picked up mine to check em out, I'm not a small guy myself and my head is fairly large too but even on me the glasses could stretch to a larger/wider head than my own both in the hinges that like most glasses bend outwards slightly(so your head can be wider than the gap between hinges) and the arms on them are plastic so they arent entirely rigid.

I am of course assuming you will get the exact same type of glasses that I have of course, if you don't then my argument collapses entirely. :banghead:

It depends on the reviewers. I think a lot of those that were so abysmally negative had already made up their minds MONTHS ago that the movie was going to be terrible regardless of what they saw. And the converse for films like Cars 2 is also true. I read one review that actually said that as impressive as the visuals were, Cars 2 was a huge step backward for Pixar in regard to storytelling, because it was a mess.

I think that anyone going to a Bay movie and pretending to expect Shakespeare (like so many reviewers in the press have done) is an idiot.

Tickets are $15.50.
Glasses are included.
Glasses are new.
TF3 was awesome. (Although, I will say that his tastes and mine are very different. He hated Tron: Legacy; I really liked it.)

So now the only trick is whether or not them things is gonna fit over me glasses.

i could, buy a beetle now, and pay £3500 (aprox) buying and insuring it,
or,
i could buy something abit more exotic, like for instance a 1.6 capri laser, declare it sorn and resto it then drive it next year whilst sticking on one of my parents policy and getting my license so that my insurance does drop a little. ive had quotes for a capri of around £4,000, not payable now but with experience under my belt and after working/saving part time for a year i think its do-able.

Meanwhile, I just inherited two computers. They're both circa 2004/2005. I haven't fired them up to see what's what yet, but the things I do know:
They're both Asus-based. One is a K8V-X. Can't remember what the other is.
One, if not both, are AMD 754-socket. I do know they both use AMD CPUs.
Neither of them have PCIe slots - they're all OG PCI with an AGP 4X/8X graphics slot. Ewwww!
Nothing is SATA - it's all EIDE. Double ewwww!
No DVD drives - all CD-Rom.
Whoever routed the wiring was inept.
I do these list things too often.

My dad and I have been talking about upgrading his 1999-vintage Celeron HP for almost a year now, and he's hoping that one of these will work as a stop-gap until he really feels he can part with the money to build a new one. At this point, I'm not sure it's going to be much of an upgrade. I wasn't paying tons of attention to PC performance at that time. I can't even get parts to upgrade these things unless I completely gut them, and I don't want the cases.

I somewhat doubt that I can run anything beyond Windows XP on these guys, never mind Windows 7. I do know that they have Win 2003 (a descendent of Windows NT) but I don't want ANYTHING to do with what may be on these HDs. I don't know "where they've been." They came from a retail store front that had closed down and these were sitting on a dumpster. They were supposed to go back to the IT department at their corporate HQ, but didn't make it apparently. Anyway, I have them now and in the next couple of days I'm going to poke and prod and see what I can get out of them.

As long as he didn't try to chase you down, or get off his bike and club you with his man-boobs, you're probably lucky. :nice:

Hey, if he wants to kill some dude on a bicycle for basically doing nothing, let him.

I dont see much problem with reused footage, I've seen worse and at least each bit is edited to better fit each film...

Rag, I sympathise - there really isnt much you can do with those junker PC's but a a complete format(and ideally shred if your worried about HDD contents - this being windows you'll have to get an aftermarket program to do it like 'killdisk'), and a new install of win XP home would probably work a treat for your old man - lets be honest anything is better than a '99 celeron :lolbeat:

Might be the best course of action to canibalise the two into one, taking the best bits such as they are and using them all at once.

I like PC tech stuff but there is a limit to what you can upgrade before its a case of everything but the case has to go and I'm not sure about the case!

When I was in Desert Storm, we had a mechanic that drove his Duece around with a blow up sheep as his co-pilot!:lolbeat: No.. we never asked... don't ask, don't tell and all!

Regarding Mickey Bay and the footage in TF3. There's been some speculation about that, and it may have to do with the stunt that gave a non-stunt extra massive brain damage. It's possible that there was no way of using the stunt footage because it was evidence in the lawsuit or it would be seen as inappropriate for the studio to include a stunt that destroyed someone's life.

Regardless of the motivation(s), Hollywood has been doing stuff like this since the beginning. It's just not a subject that comes up very often any more.

Now in regard to these foundling PCs, they're both in similar condition and equipped similarly enough that there's no point in doing any cannibalization. I did find Win XP Pro OEM sp3 on evilBay for BIN of $50. Not bad. I was going to run Ubuntu or Linux Mint on it, which are free, but I'm not sure if he'll get along with either of those. I know I'd rather use them than Windows.

So I took my kids to see Cars 2 this weekend, this movie exceeded the first by a long shot. The story line was better, the action was better, and the characters were well balanced, meaning it wasn't just McQueen all 2 hours of the movie.
Anyway this I would say was probably one of Pixar's best lately, I did enjoy T.S.3, but other than that I haven't had to much liking for the Pixar pictures recently, but Car2 definitely brought back the fun and magic, the first Toy Story brought with it.

Aye! I haven't been to see a grown up movie for quite sometime but I take my kids to our local theatre. It's a tiny one screen place, they just put in surround sound, no Hi Def though, but tickets cost a 1/3 of the price for the big cinemas. THe kids don't care about HD so it's fine for them!

That's exactly what we have in my town. A one screen theater that plays family movies. You can see a new release and get some snacks for just a couple bucks a person.

Personally, I don't really like going to the movies. I don't like people, I don't like how they behave and I don't like the uncomfortable seats. I do like the popcorn though.^_^

That's my biggest problem with the movies also Rich. That's why it's nice going there, unless you go the first day it is in the theatre its not ever super busy. I think Sunday there was four other families besides mine. It cost me $22 bucks for myself, 3 kids, and a snack and drink for each of the three. Can't beat that!

Get rid of your girlfriend. Everything will cost half as much because you won't have to pay for her. Furthermore, without a women telling you what to do, you won't have to go to stupid places like theaters or restaurants. Even more money in your pocket.
