it's mind numbing that this thread is up to 1250 something

has anyone tried to read from begining ?

How far can you get from page 1 ?

Well, I think, Ragnarok, The JOker, Myself and a couple others have been here from the beginning, and if we went back and read it we might really wonder WTH it's all about. SO it's better we don't try.

"Non-Sequitur Ahoy" maybe? "WTFs-a-Poppin'"? I think the "between me an rangerboy" title is absurd enough that it fits the whole errata mundi of the thread pretty well.

I did it the other day. Sort of a walk down Memory Lane. It's kind of long for a lane. More of an interstate, really. The best way to do it is go in shifts of 10 or 15 pages at a time.

By the way, I'm not sure if errata mundi is a real word. Theoretically and approximately, it would be Latin for "messed up world." I'm not a linguist, so that could be improperly composed. Everything I know about Latin I learned from music from the Final Fantasy series, dinosaur names and identifying wood species. Etymology can be pretty fun.

I'd reemphasize that it's best to do it in shifts, otherwise it could be one of those inescapable tunnels of despair where the only thing that awaits you at the end is a rabid imp that will eat your shoes.

Gonna pop to the supermarket this morning for some bread/butter/bacon (Bacon sandwich flat pack diy style)

I'm hoping I'm asked if i need any help by a nice woman, so i can ask her to try on the bacon for me.....its what they do in the states.

So if i don't come back, i have been arrested an charged for a significant amount of time, if i come back, i may have either of the following.

Here's what I did Wednesday and Thursday. It's a prototype/demo door for a client that was to get the "okay" today. It's a raised-panel type with bridle-joint (aka. through mortise and tenon) stile and rail construction. It's made of ash. The square pins are black walnut and they go clear through. Mainly decoration as the mortise and tenon makes for a bulletproof joint, but it does add a little where the long grain of the door components meet the square pins. Some of the pics are a little yellow, which is the result of not using the flash (some pics had horrible glare) with florescent lights.

Front (over-yellow):

Front, angled (more accurate to actual wood color):

It's up on-end like this so I could finish both the front and back simultaneously. Normally I do one side at a time, but time was something I didn't have much of. It's the first door that I've built like this, so I'm pretty pleased how it turned out.

It's a kitchen door. :nice: Check out our family business site: http://www.hartvigsons.com

One thing to keep in mind, 99% of everything you see there is the work of my father (although, I designed and built the website), and the work shown is about 5% of everything he's done. The ones I helped with are more recent than most of the items in the portfolio.

The few that I helped with that are currently on the site are below:
http://www.hartvigsons.com/hickorykitchen1.htm (cabinet construction, finish work and 90% of all lacquering)
http://www.hartvigsons.com/hickorydoll.htm (same with this one - it's in the same house :D)
http://www.hartvigsons.com/whitebookcase.htm (helped with most cabinet construction, tons and tons of sanding pre-conversion varnish)
http://www.hartvigsons.com/koatable.htm (co-designed and most of the lacquering)
http://www.hartvigsons.com/quanyin.htm (helped with the veneering on this one)
http://www.hartvigsons.com/antiquepinechests.htm (and I'm the one building and finishing these)

I also do 90% of all drafting (by hand with a Vemco drafting arm). We are a rarity in the world of cabnetry in that we don't buy our doors or build from pre-fab or knockdown cabinet parts. I'll try to round up some pic of work that I've done on my own tomorrow night or Sunday. :nice:

Ragnarok

It really depends on materials, building processes and the amount of time it takes. Sorry to be so vague. I can say this - it's expensive if you're used to shopping at Ashley Home Furnishings. But based on the level of craftsmanship he's possesses, price shouldn't be a consideration if a person truly wants his work.

What the gay? :lolbeat: Jus' kidding. It ain't homosexual unless you meant it to be. :nice: Actually the planks I had to work with were a bit warped, so this door was only good for a demo. I love working with ash, though. It's tough and hard, but it's easy to work with and doesn't blunt any of my tools.

I'm doing my final round of Christmas shopping, and it will just about blow my reserve. (Temporarily, of course.) This will be known as the year I gave everyone DVDs.

"Monk Season 7" and a new pair of slippers for my mother; "Ken Burns: The War" for my father; "Nature: Dragon Chronicles/Super Crocs" for my youngest bro; "Journey: Greatest Hits DVD 1978-1997" and "Josh Groban In Concert"* for my sister n' her hubby; "Garfield Cat Tales" box set*, "Howl's Moving Castle"* and "Up"* for my sister's girls; "Ax Men Season 2" for my oldest bro and his wife; "Due South Complete Series" for my 2nd oldest brother and his wife; and "Satriani Live"* and "Blue Planet: Seas of Life"* for their kids.

Asterisked stuff is sitting in my Amazon cart and is yet to be purchased. The only non-DVD items are the slippers for my mom and a Garageband '09 tips/tutorial book for one of my nephews. :nice: I'd like to do one more thing for my oldest bro n' wife as "Ax Men" is really more for him, and I need to do something for my younger brothers wife. As I look at this I realize that I'm very close to done. :D

I'm not doing anything serious for my other nephews and remaining niece because I won't be seeing them this year. One lives in Florida, and the remainder won't participate with our side of the family. (Lots of drama involving a divorce - I'm not going any farther than that.) Actually there is one more nephew that's kind of adrift as a result of a failed relationship of his own, so he might be coming over. I'll keep something in mind for him just in case.

Yeah, I know. In fact, I have to revise a couple of those items. Thankfully, I didn't pull the trigger on my Amazon purchase this morning and that's where all of my changes have to happen. I think my sister is the only one that will get anything out of the JG concert, so I need some more consideration for my bro-in-law. He likes to fish and is a well-trained pianist, so I'm going to look into some fish-slayin' gear or some sheet music. I'm drawing a blank on what kind of music I'd look for, though. I used to have some David Lanz music, but it must still be buried in some boxes from our move 5 years ago and I have no idea if he goes for contemporary instrumental/new age stuff.

My 2nd oldest bro's daughter will get something other than the Satriani DVD, but I'm not sure what. I've already given her all three G3 concerts and Joe's San Fran concert, so I think it's kind of redundant. She's going to BYU to be a civil engineer, but after two years she hates it, and I really don't know what she's into for leisure.

My mother suggested the Tillamook Cheese Cookbook for the two sisters-in-law, so that sounds like a plan.

Well, for the two remaining question marks, I have all day to think about it. I may pull some covert questions on my sister to get an idea on potential fishing gear or music. As for my niece…I guess I could ask her brother. (Boy, now there's a novel idea. ) Hopefully he won't rat me out. Off to Facebook for a chin waggle.

I decided that the Satriani DVD was a go for my niece after all (I couldn't think of anything more and her brother hasn't replied to my FB note), the BIL will get an awesome documentary on Steinway pianos (I saw it on PBS several months ago - I'd like to get it myself), and I dropped the Josh Groban concert in favor of an Andrea Bocelli one for sis.

Okay here is a running pictorial of some of the work I've done on my own. I'll do it in chronological order, if that's okay.

First is this: a figured African Mahogany and Sapele stationary/correspondence box. This was my first ever super-major woodworking project. I was in love and it was for a very special young woman. (I mentioned her briefly in the little discussion with MojaveMonster earlier in the thread.) I started it in 1995…and then abandoned it for something else that's seen in the next run of images. The body is ribbon-grain Af. Mahogany with a pommele Sapelé lid. Pommele (POM-meh-lay) is a term to describe a type of figure that is like raindrops in mud - little round, blistery ripples. This image was taken in 2006 when I finally got around to finishing it. I don't have any of it open. It's shaped like a wedge and has 1/2" finger joints. It's pretty massive.
http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/1995-sapele-stationary-box.jpg

The box above was originally intended as a Christmas gift, and it was becoming apparent that it wasn't going to get done and I had run into engineering problems with the lid support. So, I started with something entirely different. This is a figured Bubinga music box. It's 8" x 10" and about 2.25" tall. It's made of three individual slabs - two are stack-laminated for the body and the remainder is the lid. It's carved out with a 3.25HP plunge-router. The "bay" for the movement (it played "Memory" from Cats) was routed out just like the compartment, except from the bottom. I still have the rest of the wood from this project, about 6'. It's gorgeous stuff. Hard as all get-out. These pics were taken with a film camera about a day before I shipped it to her across town.

http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/1995-bubinga-musicbox-3.jpg
http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/1995-bubinga-musicbox-4.jpg
The liner pads are satin and the hinges are Brusso ball-tip. On the plate where I anchored the movement I built this interesting little lever arm so that I could place the movement upside down to what they're intended and a stopper plunger could still work. I never took any pictures of that. This one I did get done in time-ish for Christmas (I think it was the first of the next year). I believe this was where I may have started to scare her off.

:(

More in a little bit. :nice:

Thanks man. Woodworking is awesome as long as the client is happy. When they're not, there's nothing worse than your job.

Okay, later in 1996 I took what I learned with my little Taj Mahal music box and applied it to something more ambitious.
http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/1996-mahogany-box-1.jpg
http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/1996-mahogany-box-2.jpg
I built about eight boxes like this. One African Mahogany (pictured above - I gave it to my mother), two Ash (one never made it past the routing stage - it was one incident that could have mangled me), one African Satinwood/Avodiré, three Black Walnut (two were tall and only had two compartments instead of three), and one of South American Mahogany with fiddleback Mahogany veneered top. I never got any pics of the last one, and it was the most beautiful.

The last one I'm sure ended up in a fire or shot repeatedly in a gravel pit. My little bro bought it from me for his girlfriend at the time and when they broke up it was scary stuff.

Anyway, these boxes have three compartments instead of just one like the Bubinga one. They were also smaller (6" x 8") and had a compound arc detail that went around the outside of the box that I will never tell a living soul how I managed to pull off. The compartments were lined with flock instead of a pad, and the hinges were Brusso 95° self-stopping hinges (this way I didn't have to use a chain or ribbon to limit the lid travel).

I had gone to school for a year and then got a job at Toys R Us, so for a while I didn't do any woodwork to speak of. The next one I took on was in 2002 - a box to hold correspondence for a man that was killed in WW2. My father knew this one family and remembered hearing news from the family that the man had been killed. This would've been about 1944, so my dad would have been around five. The soldier's family kept the letters he wrote and 'round 2001 my dad wanted to know more about him and offered to archive all of the letters so the entire family could have them. (Actually, I'm the one that ended up doing that.) When we returned them, the letters would be in this box. Turns out that this particular box didn't work, so I kept it for myself and built a different one…which I can't seem to find any pics of. :p

http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/2002-cherry-box-1.jpg
http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/2002-cherry-box-2.jpg
http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/2002-cherry-box-3.jpg

The box is mildly-figured Cherry and the lid is covered with Carpathian Elm burl. The piece I had was rare in that it was FLAT! Carpathian Elm veneer is notorious for being anything but flat. Also, the density of the burl was exceptional and its color was perfect match for the Cherry. It's also finger jointed.

In 2006 I experimented with a square-chisel mortising tool in my box making and ended up doing this:

http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/2006-ak-spruce-box-1.jpg
http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/2006-ak-spruce-box-2.jpg
http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/2006-ak-spruce-box-3.jpg
http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/2006-ak-spruce-box-4.jpg

It's Alaskan White Spruce. Instead of finger joints, I used square pins to hold the box together. The pins on this one are Black Walnut. These also use what's called a Barrel hinge. Soss invented them, but the best ones I've used are made in Spain from Zysa. Can't get them State-side anymore.

More experimentation with similar results.
http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/2006-pine-boxes.jpg
These were White Pine boxes for my carver client. EDIT: Only the top two in that stack of boxes are White Pine - the rest are Alaskan Yellow Cedar. She later decided that the pins weren't "cool" anymore and wanted to go back to finger joints. FJs are actually easier in the long-run, anyway.

 Thank you. Now if I could figure out how to make decent money at it. To anyone that wants to know why I haven't been a decent contributor here projectwise…now you know. :p

Toward the end of 2006, I was commissioned to build a pair of pistol cases. The pistols were unique in that they were consecutively numbered. I don't know any of the details of the guns, like caliber, maker, etc. In the spirit of the consecutive numbers, I build these boxes with "corresponding grain symmetry." By this I mean that the veneer and lumber were cut and arranged so that when the boxes were displayed, they would reflect the guns' serial nature. Hopefully the images will help a'splain that.

http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/2006-walnut-pistol-boxes-7.jpg
Actually as I look at them, it doesn't explain anything. I was using a pretty pathetic camera. The veneer on the tops of the boxes will be reflective of one another regardless how they are placed together. The fronts, when placed side-by-side, are continuous grain. I guess the last pic shows that. In pic #4, you can see the sides where I tried to do something similar, but it wasn't quite as affective. That board had very straight grain until the end of it and there was a length of it where there would have been a smoother transition that I removed, so as a result it doesn't look very homogenous.

They were Black Walnut with BW Burl tops and curly BW undersides. Both were lockable and had the same feet as the Bubinga box a few posts back. Each box holds two pistols and has two triangles to hold six rounds each. The insides are a little gunky looking because there was no liner - the client was going to handle that. It's finished in Minwax Antique Oil Finish (the reason for the spotty inside) and polished off with Briwax. The last I heard from the gentleman that bought these from me was he was ill with some manner of cancer. I haven't heard how he's been for a couple of years. :(

I think this is all I'll post for a while. I could do this for another hour but my hands are getting tired from typing.

Alright, at least a day late, but I'll wrap things up. Not feeling very talkative, so I'll be brief.

This is a large Ash cedar chest (the Aromatic Cedar is in the lining). It was originally commissioned in 2003, but I didn't finish it until the week of Christmas 2007. The client received it on Dec 24. The reason it took so long was based on two things: 1) I was in over my head, and 2) we had to move our shop from Anchorage to Wasilla, which was the most gruesome and chaotic move I've ever made.
http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/2007-ash-cedar-chest-1.jpg
http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/2007-ash-cedar-chest-2.jpg

Look at the top of the leg in this pic. It would be on the far left of the image, below the open lid. See how it goes around the corner? The way I built these is with a joint called a Lock Miter. It's a royal pain to set up on the shaper, but it gives a bulletproof joint. Lots of surface area for glue.
http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/2007-ash-cedar-chest-3.jpg
http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/2007-ash-cedar-chest-4.jpg

You can see some of the more interesting aspects of the front of the lid and the "chin" on the bottom rail in the first, second, fourth and final pic. The legs and horizontal pieces were built with mortise and tenon construction.
http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/2007-ash-cedar-chest-5.jpg
These are the only pics I can seem to find of it, and it's far from complete here. These images are at a stage when the thing was so incomplete that I still didn't have a floor in yet or the Cedar liner, although the hinges are mortised in at this point. The floor and underside of the lid got dark Maroon velvet pads, and the lid had Häfele supports that limited how far the lid opened as well as gave it a somewhat-controlled close. I never did get any pics of it completed and in spite of the client's promise I never did get any pictures at its new home. He was patient, but in the end was a dick.

This next one is a box I made for my 2nd oldest brother's daughter for her graduation from High School in '07. The box itself is an unusually dark piece of figured African Mahogany (which I suspect may be Khaya grandifolia or "Heavy" African Mahogany, rather than the typical Af. Mahogany species Khaya ivorensis or Khaya senegalensis), and the lid is ribbon-grain Sapelé.

http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/2007-mahogany-grad-box-2.jpg
http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/2007-mahogany-grad-box-3.jpg

Okay, final run below. These are another small box I make from time to time. It's antique Long-Leaf Yellow Pine, aka. Heart Pine or Pitch Pine that was reclaimed from the old Sears Catalog building when it got demolished in '95. To read why the wood is special, go here (http://www.hartvigsons.com/pinehistory.htm). I destroyed my hands polishing these. My psoriatic arthritis has ravaged my hands (I'm getting better with treatment, though) and when I did these, it required a lot of hand polishing to get the luster I wanted/needed. The "event" of polishing these little bastårds caused permanent injury to my hands. Part of the problem was the finish itself. Since the pine is full of pitch (even after more than 100 years since it was harvested) regular lacquers won't cure, and it requires that I use a water-borne finish. Rudd Nu-Wave and Minwax Poly-Crylic is what I used on these, and I will never do so again. It never hardens properly. The only finish of this type that's worth a damn is Sherwin Williams water-borne (I can't remember the product's name off-hand). 20X better than Rudd or Minwax, even on its worst day.

First pic is unfinished, second pic is finished and polished - which made it so I couldn't even use a toothbrush properly for almost two years afterward.
http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/2008-sears-boxes-1.jpg
http://hvx-rc.com/forumstuff/work/2008-sears-boxes-2.jpg

These in the front are of a different design than what's on our website (the other two designs are represented toward the back), and I have a fourth design that I've semi-prototyped. It will look more like the original design only far more elegant, and it will be simpler to build.

Sweet show Rag, I'd love a box like that. I've never made any that small. I've done a few toy chest size, but never like a cigar or keepsake type.

I do have to agree with you on the min-wax water borne garbage it isn't worth the hassle. Like you said it never fully hardens.

Ragnarok
12-09-2009, 09:09 PM
Yeah, it's rubbery. Part of that is inherent with the type of finish, but Sherwin Williams seems to actually harden, powder when sanded (like it's freakin' supposed to!) and has a not-worthless sanding sealer to accompany the lacquer. In fact it's essential! Rudd's Nu-Wave sanding sealer is a waste of money, and I've never seen one from Minwax.

We just did a large kitchen out of this pine and used the Sherwin Williams water-borne on it. It finished out in less time, with less hassle, with less sanding between coats (that's always an issue with water-bornes) and it sprays like a dream.

I've got another job, a fairly lucrative one oddly enough, that I hope to have finished by the end of the year and that should pay for my big Hackintosh project. I can't wait to get it going. :nice:

In my delirium I decided to check out the process of building a bootable HD for my Hackintosh. It looks I may have a little challenge. To begin with, my current computer, an Apple eMac G4, is not supported with the newest Mac OS (10.6). The best way to construct a bootable HD with a retail disc is to have a Mac to start with for the assembly processes (got one), but it would appear that the machine that will be used for this process will need to boot from the new drive before it's transplanted to the new non-Apple computer. I really hope I'm reading it wrong or jumping to an incorrect conclusion. Here's the link (http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=185097).

The worst-case scenario is that I buy a used Mac Mini from eBay (Core 2 Duo preferred) or get the lowest-end unit from Apple to act as my "architect" machine. They're $600 new. It's something I wanted do eventually as a precaution to do any troubleshooting, kernel extension rebuilds or modifications to the OS image if I can't do it from the Hackintosh itself. I just didn't want to have to get it first. If I take that route it will delay the completion of my main computer by about a month. Dang.

I think I'll go on as though I've made some incorrect assumptions because I don't see anything explicit to support my fear, and if I run into trouble…I know what step I need to take next.

We use just good ol' aliphatic resin, and there's nothing in that that's going to hurt anyone. Some people call it yellow carpenter's glue. Specifically, we use Franklin Titebond.

Blood sugar's never been a problem. We have testing gear here for it, too. My father developed Type II diabetes a few years ago, so the folks got the necessary equipment to test blood sugar levels. I can check mine any time I want. The last time I did it was 108.

What part's do you have so far, for this project?

yea what he said? Is this something you should build up slowly over time or just just the cash and Git R' Done!

I started out with a build-as-I-go approach, but I'm almost at the point financially where I can buy the remaining bits in one big lump. It's ultimately best to get everything at once so that if there's a part that's DOA or develops a problem you haven't outrun you return/exchange period. It's especially short on things like CPUs, motherboards and video cards.

What I have right now is a copy of Apple Mac OSX Snow Leopard, some internal 52-in-one card reader (Rosewill?), a Vigor Gaming Monsoon IIILT CPU heatsink with dual 120mm fans, and a Thermaltake Armor + VH8000BWS tower case. (I also have a Silverstone LC-17 rackmount HTPC case, but I won't be using it after all.) Thermaltake's new Level 10 chassis made me weep when I first saw it, but at $800 I don't think it's worth it. I've toyed with the idea of building a case out of something different. It could be cool with some Black Walnut burl and black aluminum. I can get things like motherboard trays and hard drive cages from www.mountainmods.com.

Here's an image of the the heatsink I have, lit-up no less. Found it on a some review site.
54470

Here's the case I have. It has a monstrous 250mm side fan for cooling down video cards. Thermaltake calls it a mid-tower, which might be accurate concerning its interior dimensions, but on the outside - sucka be hyooj!
54471
54472
54473

A couple of things about this case are a little irksome. One, there is no removable motherboard tray, but the case is big enough that it may not be that much of an issuse. Two, I can't use full-length video cards (ie. anything over 10") unless I remove the HD cage and move my HDs up into the 5.25" bays, which requires 3.5"-to-5.25" adapters to make it work. You can see that in this pic:
54474
The HD cage is in the lower right of the case. The most powerful video card I can use and will be using is a not-that-impressive Nvidia GeForce 250GTS, which is only as long as the motherboard is deep (9.6") so I won't have any problems with my HDs and graphics needing the same space.

You can also see in the last image how the interior is just bare steel. Since it has a window so I can see all of its naughty bits which will also light up like a Vegas nightclub, I'd like to paint that matte or flat black to have a more unified look. It could result in an increase in heat, but this thing has more holes in it than a screenplay for a Gore Verbinski movie and more than enough fans to push/pull air to compensate for it. I'm not that worried. (Yet.)

I gotta have the hardware if I wanna use the software. The computer I have now is barely more powerful than a Gameboy Advance - I've completely outgrown it. The software instruments and other audio applications I want/need are murderously demanding of Ram, HD performance and CPU muscle, so my new machine needs to have as much of that as I can possibly afford. Intel will be releasing a 6-core monster CPU in Q2 of '10. That will be upgrade #1. I can't wait! :D

I almost had a very dangerous encounter with a moose and her two calves this evening. We've had about a foot of snow in the last day, and because things are really busy at work I can't shovel the driveway during the daytime. I have to do it in complete darkness. It goes black shortly after 4:00pm, and the closest streetlight to our place is about 2,500 feet away. I shoveled the first 8 inches of our total of 12 last night without any hassle. Outside lights are on and we park the van so that its lights help illuminate the driveway, which is about 50 feet long. A big, overweight and very arthritic person like myself has a difficult time doing this without some kind of massive exhaustion or injury.

Today we got another 4 inches of snow and a grader came by to clean up the neighborhood streets, which left a 12 inch x 2-foot berm at the end of our driveway. Once I get home from work, I decide that I'll take care of that first since it's always the most difficult part of the whole job. The whole time, the neighbor dogs (who have hurt our dog at least twice) are barking their stupid heads off. I say to them, "It's just me, you idiots." I get the little glacier dispatched and start shoveling my way back to the house. Then I hear some branches being bent and snow crunching about fifteen feet east of me. I can't see diddly-squat, and with the glare of the van's headlights in my glasses I'm completely blind. I think, "That could be a moose," so as quickly as I can without being startling to whatever may be in the brush, I make my way to the van which is about 30 feet from me. The noise persists, yet I don't see anything. I assume that maybe it's the snow falling from the trees around our property. I proceed to clear the walkway by the house and in front of the garage door.

Then I look up, and in the light from the still-running headlights of our van, I see two yearling calves and a monstrously big cow moose crossing the street at the end of our driveway. If Big Mama wanted to, she could have run me down, crushed me and ripped my guts out with her kicking hooves before I could have dropped my shovel and reached the van for protection. A lone moose usually will leave a person alone as long as it's unprovoked, but a protective mother is double-way bad dangerous. I don't know if she was posturing to take me down in an attempt to run me off, or if she was just assuming I was part of the scenery. Either way, I couldn't see what she was or wasn't doing. I'm very grateful that I'm unhurt and alive.

I went ahead and cleared the driveway about as far as the van, but the rest of the driveway is still buried. I may have to sacrifice my lunch break to finish it off. :nono: I ain't doin' no more night shovelin'.

Other than the moose scare, tonight has been okay. I got my motherboard, CPU, Windows 7 and video card ordered from Zip Zoom Fly. I'll make my order to Amazon for the rest of it either tomorrow or Friday. I'm trying to figure out how to get the fundage for my EFI-X module because I don't want to run my bank account completely dry on this.

I have a little pile of RC stuff I need to sell off. I've been going back and forth on whether or not to get rid of it. I think this is incentive enough to go through with it. Hopefully I can get it all together and strategize a plan on how I'll go about it in the coming week. I have two TA-01s, both with aluminum motor mounts, hardened steel prop-shafts and ball-bearings. One even has a never-run FRP chassis, stainless suspension shafts and never-used or -glued Pro-Line Dirt Hawg tires.

I also have an assortment of vintage Fox parts (chassis, gearbox, etc.), a fixer-upper KBF that I never got around to working on, and some Terra Crusher tires. I doubt the latter will get much interest here at all. Probably an eBay-only.

Just thinking out loud. Don't mind me. :ideas:

They're spam-bots. They scour forums using spiders to search for certain terms or phrases in threads and then new "members" register with an attempt to make what looks like semi-authentic contributions. Fist-humpers like this then have links to whatever crap their either trying to sell or infect the world's computers with in their signatures. I coulda used your plow truck last night. Would have saved me some potential trouble.

Moose are active at all hours. Sometimes they sleep during the day, other times they're active when it's light out. Of course it was only 6:00pm when I was working on the driveway, so it wasn't that late. I'm hoping to see her footprints in the snow when it gets light out to see how close she was to me. The one thing I can't prove is when she was that close to me. What I heard sounded close, but snow has a way of sound-proofing the world around you, so she may have not been that close. It really doesn't matter - moose can move so fast that she would have overtaken me before I could react.

As far as she and the kids, I just got up, so I have no way of knowing where she is. They could still be close, or they could be several miles away. Our neighborhood is well buried in the back woods, making it perfect moose habitat. Moose actually thrive near civilization. Roads and streets for them to walk on give them mobility they don't have in the wild. It makes it dangerous for everyone, unfortunately, when it comes to encounters for vehicles. It's not like hitting a deer when someone hits a moose. It's like hitting a horse - the moose's legs are so tall that when a car hits one it hits their legs and the body of the animal either crushes in the roof or ends up inside the vehicle with the riders in the car, often killing the moose and occupants (or horribly injuring both).

Like I mentioned before, I'll have to finish the digout operation during my lunch break so I can be more aware of my surroundings. :nice:

In the meantime, I'm completely stoked that I'm finally going to finish my workstation. That means I'm going to have to do some major rearrangement with desks, boxes and other stuff in my room so I can use it more effectively. It's a lot of work, but ultimately it's going to be fun. :excited: This also means that about the first of the year I can retire my old eMac. I might…might…give it to my mother. It's still a viable machine for doing stuff like web browsing and emailing. I'll need to get the most recent OS that will still work on it (10.5? - it's running 10.4.11 right now) so that it will be the most effective.

Sounds like a good plan, Dealing with Moose sounds fun. Our extremely intelligent environment control agency for NY are in talks to reintroduce the moose to the area. People can't cope with the deer. LOL!

Ragnarok

How are they going to do that? Give everyone cowcatchers for their vehicles or open up a hunt?

The Stray Cat
12-17-2009, 08:42 AM
Well it'll probably as well thought out as the reintro of the Coyotes, and then the Mt. Lions. Now the coyotes are a menace to the farmers here and the lions are a menace to the hikers and campers in certain areas.

Ragnarok

The Stray Cat

Yep they just started talking about the trouble they are having in New Mexico I believe with Some Wolf breed they reinto'd there. It's never fully thought through. There is more than Man's presence that has caused these animals to become extinct in certain areas. There was a guy who dugg up a fully intact Mammoth from the ice and the scientist was talking about using Elephant dna mixed with the dna from the mammoth and reinto them.... HELLO......

Ragnarok
12-17-2009, 03:21 PM
They should just use frog DNA because you don't need science any more to know what's missing in the first place. I tell ya, that stuff works miracles. Ask Jeff Goldblum.

I don't know if reintroducing woolies would be as detrimental as bringing predators that fight for the same access to the foodchain as we do, but I don't think I'd be that supportive. When I started paying attention to that kind of thing Japanese scientists were the first ones I'd heard were wanting to do mammoth cloning.

The Stray Cat
12-17-2009, 03:27 PM

By the way, I got to see where Ms. Brown and the kids were last night. They were indeed about 15 feet away from where I was standing, munching on some kind of shrub next to a black spruce. That's kind of the way I have to look at it. The TA01 Hummer I purchased from a nephew, and the TA01 buggy I have hasn't been used since I bought the FRP chassis for it in 2001. I keep thinking I have plans for the rigs or ideas I want to apply to them, but it never happens.

Changin' gears, I had some drama with the phone call I had to make to ZZF. To make a very, very long story short, they cancelled my order as they couldn't verify my order because I mistyped my phone number. So they're going to hold my money until about Wednesday. It's actually the credit card co. that's holding my cash until then. I borrowed the money from my father to re-do the order and when my "old money" is back in my account I'll re-credit him. Crap like this is never simple.

The good news is that I do have everything else I need to get this machine going shipping in my direction, including the EFI-X doowacky. ZZF's parcel will probably ship next week. I can barely contain myself. :excited: When it's done, it's gonna look like Darth Vader's bug zapper! I'd like to do a non-traditional build thread with this. Not sure if I'll simply post in this thread or start a new one.

I've done what I can to refurbish the Hummer (like I said, it wasn't mine to begin with), but I have upgraded it a little with the aluminum motor mount (new in package) and the steel propshaft. The buggy is almost shelf-queen condition with new aluminum oil dampers and plenty of other nifty bits. I have an not-too-bad-condition tub as a spare that came from the buggy when I went with the FRP chassis kit. I've got some BT homework Sunday, but since I effectively have to tear my room apart for my new computer setup anyway, I should be able to dig out my RC stuff. Not going to happen for a while it would seem. I just went to my account with ZZF only to discover that my second order has been cancelled as well. I have $1,800 now tied up in pending transactions for who knows how long. I've filed a complaint with them demanding to know why my second order was cancelled after I made the correction to my account. I was under the impression that they were an honest and reputable company. I've been greatly deceived. I'm never doing business with them again and will NEVER recommend them to anyone. I will vehemently tell anyone how they have abused my patronage and wasted both my time and painfully-hard earned money. If they do not return my funds in full I'm filing a report to the Internet Fraud organization and contacting an attorney.

Nah kidding, sucks when plans dont go as.....well "Planned" amazon let me know the item i ordered (Norman Wisdom box set) was out of stock, i rang them to see what was being done about it an if i get the £8odd back for the quick postage? I got an, i dunno if she was american, or half american an half chinese??? but i got this dumb as a plank woman who took (according to phone time clock thingy) 38mins just to tell me YES i was being refunded for the postage.

What parts are you having trouble getting?

Ragnarok
12-19-2009, 08:36 AM
I would say this was a first rate assrape to the tune of $1,800US.

The parts I was ordering from them was a Gigabyte EX58-UD5 motherboard, Intel Core i7 920 LGA-1366 CPU, MS Windows Ultimate 64-bit OEM, and HIS H487FM1GH Radeon HD 4870 HD 4800 Series 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express X16 v2.0 video card.

I have these things in my NewEgg shopping cart at the moment (the video card I'm getting from them - the HIS H487Q1GH - is actually a tick better than the one I was getting from ZZF), and it's waiting to go once these assclowns have refunded my money.

Damn i see the reason for the whole "Ragnar smash" thing, well i hope everything sorts out for you asap bud! an with those parts it sounds like a meaty pc!!!

Ere i thought about changing the motherboard in my pc but dunno how its done? is it simply:

Unplug all the components.
Take old board out.
Place new board in.
Refit all components.
Reinstall windows of choice.

An thats it??? or does it have to be all setup ect? e.g in that Bios screen.

EDIT: i even got some RAM few months back an it states for best performance use timings... an whatever it was, but in the bios of mine i cant set "Timings" Only voltages?? i dunno, the last pc i had i tried to fix myself i lost my rag with it an ended up drop kicking it out to the trash.

Ragnarok
12-19-2009, 09:30 AM
As far as building a PC, as long as all of the old components are compatible with the new board, that's most of it. BIOS stuff might need to be taken care of, as well as new drivers, but I'm far from an expert in this field - there are several guys here that have had years of this kind of thing under their belt. This will be my first build-from-scratch computer and I plan on a lot of "learning experiences" along the way. I've already had one. :nono: I do know that it's often recommended that you have the latest BIOS version installed, but I've seen lots of examples of where new BIOS' are flawed or will completely brick the motherboard. Research is the key.

Regards to RAM timing, I'm sure that's handled in the BIOS. I understand that certain mobos are stunted when it comes to a lot of adjustments, particularly performance-related things. This is where lots of research is an advantage. Read lots of user reviews, published reviews and compare specifications between lots of different units. Often, motherboards that are targeting gamers or "enthusiasts" have tons more adjustable parameters than just basic ones. It's not always the case, but it is more often than not. It's just like RC competition rigs vs. entry-level ones. A Tamiya Hot Shot has practically zero tunability compared to something like whatever carbon-shod chicane-hopping monster Yokomo is making now.

One of the better forums I've found that talks about this stuff is http://www.hardforum.com The majority of the things they talk about either go over my head or aren't relevant to whatever I'm researching, but just like here, if hang out there long enough you start to learn a lot from osmosis.

With the parts I've chosen it's not that high-end, but I have purchased the right motherboard whereupon I feed it enough money it certainly can be a monster. 'Round May or June, with a Quadro FX 5800 slung under my arm, I hope to be shouting from the crow's nest, "Six cores, ahoy!"

I appreciate that. Fingers and toes crossed. Companies like Amazon won't charge you until your swag is ready to ship. These folks, however, take the money first, and if there's a problem they take their sweet time getting back to you.

The only "problems" I've had with Amazon was ordering an LCD HDTV they had only one of, and then notified me it was not actually there. It cost me a day but they never charged me, so it didn't tie up my money. The other was a pair of shoes I had ordered and it was merely an issue of size. It wasn't their fault at all. It's just that Columbia's idea of size 16 is very different than everyone else's. If my feet were built like Sideshow Bob's (long, narrow and flat), they'd have been okay. My feet are more similar to Hulk's or Fred Flintstone's (long, wide and thick), so I returned them and ended up purchasing Timberland Titans and they're the best shoes I've ever owned. :D

NewEgg has been 100% non-problematic.

I threw a couple Pork baby back ribs on with some Famous Dave's Pork rub. I used 3 Maple wood chunks, with a 50/50 mix of Apple Juice and Water in the pan and cooked for 4 hours at 225*. I sauced at 3 hours and 45 minutes, and took them off at 4 hours. After that...I enjoyed.

Real men BBQ in the winter…

…in their tee-shirts…

…barefooted.

My vacation from the computer started Saturday. I only get a couple of minutes during my lunch break. I've been house-sitting for my sister and will be for an undetermined amount of time. My Magic 8-ball says sometime next week. I'm hoping for no later than Saturday, but we'll see. Actually, I may have a couple of days off this week (or partial days off), so actually it won't be all that bad.

The Stray Cat

I BBQ in the winter usually ina swetashirt, and boots, but Christmas day is no day for smoking a turkey or ribs out side. Especially when the wife is cooking HAMMMMM!!

Ragnarok
12-28-2009, 03:30 PM
Yeah, that's true. I've never actually bubba-kyooed in the snow myself. Although, I have grilled a couple of burgers in the winter, but I'm not sure that counts. :p We had ham for Christmas, too. Actually, they had ham - all I had was a salad and a roll. Ham dudn't like me. What's weird is the more processed a particular pork-product is, the better I am at "handling" it. Pepperoni, italian sausage, etc. doesn't give me the flack a chop will.

Well I'm pretty sure that I can honestly say in my life I've eaten enough pork product for the two of us Rag. I like grilling food, I am in the process of adding on my porch to the back of my house that is pretty big. So i'll have lots of room for grilling come winter.

I'd be better off with some kind of laptop or netbook type o' thing. It also looks like I'll be here for more than another week. I'm less than pleased. I had thought about taking it all over to my sis' house to work on it there, but there are so many parts, and it's so heavy…and there are so many stairs to climb just to get to the front door…that I'm going to work on it off-and-on in the time I have when I get home from work and when I go over there. I've taken a few pics here and there as things have moved on with it, and I may go ahead and do some more. I contemplating not even starting the thread, but I'm thinking I may stay the course and go through with it. Can't do squat tonight on my computer. Got home late from work. Nieces came over for pizza for the New Year while their mom n' step-dad are in Tejas. Now they want to go home. It isn't even 8:30 yet! I'm freaking-damn 33 years old and my schedule is predicated on the ephemeral whims of three moody teenagers. I love 'em to death, but egads, man - I have friggin' limits. I'm taking a shower and then it's off to their house where I sit for three hours drinking Diet A&W root beer and watching "Metalacalypse", "Everybody Loves Raymond", "Whose Line…" or some brain-dead cable show until my eyelids feel like they are made of stinging lead and fall asleep on painfully uncomfortable couch only to wake up at 3:00AM because I'm worried about work.

It's a little hard to look for a silver lining when the cloud over your head is raining frogs. Angry frogs. With iPhones. And stupid self-imposed sleeping schedules during Christmas break.

I have the PC built. I'm attempting to run the damnable thing, but it won't get past a "Verifying DMI Data Pool" process. The EFI-X is supposed to load after this, but since it won't stop verifying nothing happens. I've checked and re-checked my BIOS settings and I can't find where the problem is.

I wanted to do the build thread once I completed the machine and had it running at 100%. So far everything was going okay until now.

Unfortunately this is unknown territory for everyone I know, so I'm alone, lost out in the prairie. It's getting dark and I'm surrounded by wolves, without a sidearm or a way to make a fire. There's a passage in the EFI-X so-called support page…

3) You will see "Verifying DMI Pool Data."

This is normal, and will disappear after a few seconds. If "Verifying DMI Pool Data" does not disappear after a few seconds..

…and then what?!? That's all it says before it goes to the next step. Vaht de fack?!?

I've registered with the manufacturer's support forum and I'm awaiting registration verification, so I haven't found any answers from them. Either there's a hardware conflict somewhere, or a hardware failure, or my EFI-X is toast.

Here's what I've done so far to attempt to remedy the problem:

Re-checked BIOS settings.
Cleared CMOS.
Checked and re-checked hardware connections.

I'm out of ideas unless I have a piece of hardware that's died or not working. According to one guide to the problem (DMI pool hangs) it may take "some time" for the error to work itself out. I really don't know what "some time" means in any kind of real-world value represented by seconds, minutes or hours that any human being would normally understand, so I'm going to leave it for 20 minutes and see what happens.

EFI-X diagnosis is tricky.

Make sure you have voltage at the fuel pump, then check pressure at the rail. If your Check Engine light is blinking, write down the blink code. Did you install a new filter?

Ragnarok

It's possible that the kanuter valve is in upside down. However, if I reverse the polarity of the plasma thrusters, thereby overdriving the flux capacitor and creating a gravity well separating the co-mingling universe layers…the peanut butter and broccoli soufflé might work.

I reset the CMOS and got it to stop hanging on the at the DMI pool verification, but resetting the CMOS kills my BIOS settings, which in turn kills my ability to use my EFI-X unit. I'm almost of the opinion that the EFI-X is what's messed up. I'm still digging around until I get my help-forum registration verified by their admin.

Sure. Why not?

I finally got the "Verifying DMI Data Pool" thing to stop hanging and received the needed "Update Success" message at the end of the ellipsis, but the EFI-X isn't taking over as it's supposed to. The only conclusion I can think of is that it's fried. How it got that way is anyone's guess. It's RMA time unless I can remedy it.

If I do exchange it, and the new unit fails too, then I have no choice but the Hackintosh route, and I don't relish that at all.

Ragnarok
01-02-2010, 09:19 PM
I just read a review that stated this…

I did run into some problems installing my EFiX module. At times the system refused to boot or hung at install screens, but after a bit of perseverance, an update of the firmware of the EFiX module and support from the EFiX forums, I’d installed Mac OS X on my EFiX machine.
It would be nice to find out exactly what the solution was. My unit presumably has the latest firmware already. The latest one only fixes the preferences pane - not the issue(s) I'm dealing with. Investigating further, I know that I'm not the only one that has had this problem. I am quite a ways from "freakout and panic" over this. Not mad or angry, just disappointed and frustrated.

I am looking at the Hackintosh route a little more closely. I'm still concerned about the potential issue I mentioned, I dunno, sixty or eighty posts ago: needing an Intel-based Mac to begin with in order to modify the installation disc ISO.

Naw, I'm gonna start a new thread. I've just uploaded the pics from my camera to my computer and now I'm about to start resizing them.

I've received a note from EFI-X support (kinda). They want to know what is happening. I told them what was happening in my first support request. So I re-told them, and gave them an explicit list of all of my computer parts.

I have another angle on this. If I can exchange this EFI-X for another one, and the new one does work, then I'll be able to do the ISO/OS modfications on the self-same machine so that I will no longer need the EFI-X. Kind of life support until I can get it back in the water. The advantage is that it's about $400 cheaper than getting a Mac Mini to do the job and it's money I've already spent. However, the advantage to having a Mac Mini around is it could be used for future salvage and recovery in the event my Hackintosh kicks the bucket or has issues.

I got my 3racing winch working last night minus the $15 3racing controller. I bought the winch for 14$ shipped from HK, and a $3 switch from radio shack. Works like a charm. So I'll be cutting my chassis this evening, so I'll get some pics of the start tonight or tomorrow.

Today is the first day here above 20 dgrees in 12 days.

Lovely Jubbly!, good news on the chassis :chug: i got the same winch, havent really used it much as i would like to change the cord to steel, just havent had the chance yet.

It be Zero here... well just below, i got meself 4 hilift axles an im thinking of doing some sort of military rig with twin front steering??? only problem is i have 1 tranny to use an a rc4wd transfer case, only way i think it can be done is to change one of the axles to a twin output, not sure what parts i need though, maybe the centre from a semi axle?

The Stray Cat
01-07-2010, 09:28 AM
Yep I'm going to modify a TLT axle to be double output. Won't you need two double output axles?? There's an easy trick to it, I can't find the thread right now but it can be done with HL or TLT axles.

Ragnarok

If I recall correctly you can do it by using Tamiya big-rig axle parts.

THE_JOKER
01-07-2010, 10:29 AM
Its either that or a very strange transfer case setup  im gonna search for that thread now, i hope i can use big rig axle inners Rag/Rock as i think i have a couple of them spare somewhere? If not i may just go for a 6x6

No matter 8x8 or 6x6 you still need at least one dbl output axle. unless its a six wheel truck that is really on a 4x4.

Or CR-01 tranny up front driving front axle, long shaft inbetween the frames to the transfer case over the rear axles, then split to both axles at the rear.

Just have to spin one axle over so it doesnt fight against the others.

EDIT: incase you have no idea what im talking about, (Which im guessing you wont  ) i should have a mockup pic of it tommorow all being well with parcel man :nice:

Just been looking for some ideas on the body Rock, came across this, is it like this for a reason? do they not know what "Camoflauge" is? or (Like someone said to me yesterday) have they been watching Pimp My Ride? why the whitewalls?

That's a Japanese military truck, the camo is digital but the walls is just some those quirky things Japanese do. It's probably just used for parades and ceremonies.

Isn't the red star communist China???

There are many types of camo. The likely root of the word camouflage is camouflet, a French term meaning smoke blown in someone's face as a practical joke.

Disruptive or dazzle camouflage.

That rig looks like an AA gun. If so the naked eye of a pilot would probably have a hard time seeing the whitewalls at altitude. Especially if there is snow on the ground.

Yep Chinese not Japanese. But i'd still go with a parade truck, The asian armies have a lot of vehicles just for ceremonial purposes.

Joker I'm not sure what "disk" you are talking about.

I like the fourth down also, but I have some plans for the one I'm doing already... top secret LOL!

Definitely Chinese. Looks like they have a thing for whitewalls. IDK if it's ceromonial or what. Don't under-estimate the them though. The Chinese only show us what they want us to see.
