All very good information Jake. I highly doubt that they will do another Hulk movie and have another actor portray Bruce Banner at this point. I heard they were in discussions to make a deadpool flick which could be really cool but then they said Ryan Reynolds would play him and I was like :puke:

Anyway, I haven't heard of any Avenger's Character mix ups which would be cool. I'd like to see some of the other Avengers show up but Cap, IM, and Hawkeye were pretty much mainstays.

The only way I'd want to see another Hulk movie would be if Mark Ruffalo played the part. He fits it perfectly, in my opinion.

The only problem I had with the portrayal of Deadpool in Wolverine was how serious he was. In the Deadpool comics, there's nonstop comedy and humor mixed in with excessive violence. I don't know that it would actually make a very good movie. I figure the only reason he'd get cast as Deadpool would be because he played the part previously.

I know that the "founding members" were Iron Man, Thor, Ant Man, Wasp, and Hulk.

Captain America was retroactively given founder status in place of Hulk even though that didn't happen until much later in the series. Captain America was also the Avengers' leader which caused tension between him and Iron Man, especially during the super hero civil war.

Other Avengers team members have included:
Hawkeye
Quicksilver
Scarlet Witch
Black Panther
Black Widow
Beast
Moondragon
Ms. Marvel
Falcon
She-Hulk
Captain Marvel
War Machine
Thing
Mr. Fantastic
the Invisible Woman
Human Torch
Quasar
Spiderman
Spiderwoman
Sandman
Wolverine
Doctor Strange
Daredevil
Storm
Venom

I skipped probably 100 or so other lesser known members. I figured the names I listed were the more well known superheroes. Notable members include Spiderman and Venom, the entire Fantastic 4, Beast, Wolverine, Storm and Scarlet Witch, all X-Men, Daredevil, and of course Hawk Eye and Black Widow.

And no, I don't know that list off the top of my head. I'm not that big of a nerd.

I would really like to see a comic movie with carnage in it as he is my favourite villian. I also really like venom from the comics but was annoyed how they portrayed him (Topher Grace is way to weedy to be Venom) in SM3.

I'm actually glad they rebooted the Spiderman story. For a story with so much potential, they really made some stinkers, especially with that third movie.

The Stray Cat
07-06-2012, 08:24 PM
Well the spider man franchise needed to be rebooted like the BAtman one did. From the trailers I've seen they did the characters justice.

As far as the Avengers multitude of characters, I find it funny you said the Xmen as part of the Avengers. Dang near every character in the Marvel-verse were an Avenger or Xmen at some point, sometimes unilaterally depending on the comic story arcs going on at the time.

Not sure if it's been talked about yet, but we watched the new Ghost rider last week and i thought it was total garbage. First off the story line didn't suit the Ghost rider if you ask me and then there was the camera shake throughout the whole film. They tried to make it seem more action packed by constantly moving and flicking and shaking the camera. This only lead to me feeling like i was going to blow chunks. I also didn't like the way they made Nicolas Cage act like he was crazy. One thing i did like was the more detailed skull of the rider, that was it. After about 10-15 mins i wanted to turn it off. It was a total waste of money and i would have rather spent that money paying someone to dig out my eye balls with a rusty spoon.

THE_JOKER
07-07-2012, 03:33 AM
2 favourite bits from that film for me, was when he first comes in as the Ghost Rider. (jumps into scene on bike)

And near the end, when the decay guy is on the bonnet of the womans car. Ghost rider turns then focuses on him, both cool effects.

other than that though yeah, didn't think too much of it.

The Stray Cat
07-07-2012, 07:19 AM
I have always been a Ghost Rider fan, read a lot of the GR comics as a kid. When I heard they were making a movie (the 1st one) I was excited. That was one big pile of cow dung, I haven't even had the slimmest of desire to watch how badly they destroyed the second one.

Ian

Punisher War Zone was a second Punisher movie which was pretty good and entertaining. The original one with Thomas Jane as the star, and John Traolta as the bad guy was pathetic.

I'm going to sell my Beamer and get another 4x4...Or, get another 4x4 and sell my beamer :(

I miss the practicality of a 4x4, just chuck stuff in the back and not worry. The cars different, no dogs allowed, get your feet off the plastics, don't touch etc etc.

So bye bye beamer:

Ian
07-10-2012, 11:59 AM
No, just some rats?

Yep, selling the BMW. I missed that Vitara above though through no fault of my own or any tard moment i may or may not have had in the last 10 seconds of the auction :( So i'm currently looking at others. I just want to get out and about again in a 4x4. Something i can throw the dog in the back of ( not literally ) and my tools and not have to worry about things/kids marking the leather and such. I'll miss my beamer immensely, but i also miss the freedom i had with a 4x4. I even looked at a Ford Ranger and a 4.0ltr Ford Explorer

BigTiny
07-10-2012, 01:18 PM
Throw the horse in the back of the 4x4, tie the cart to the roof and crash the BMW into it, sell the whole thing and stick it in the modern art section of the dark side of ebay, then fly away in the microlight.

And if you can afford a 4 ltr engine you should just keep all 4 vehicles, buy joker a boat and rent out your house and move into a hallowed out tree.

That's the only time the seller can deliver it from Wales to my brothers house in Thirsk North Yorkshire :D I'll soon be back round the dunes and beaches. I can also check out that new track they just cut into the land to the new wind farms, it stretches for about 3-4 miles out into the sticks. Happy days! I just hope my wheels and mud tyres fit it.

That's better MPG than my old Vitara, but you already know that! My Vitara was doing 12mpg and would cost me 100 quid a week just for the school run. My beamer with it's comfy leather interior and climate control and air conditioning does 40-50mpg depending on the road and traffic. The more you have to stop the more it uses. It was averaging over 50mpg on the motorway with cruise control in at 60mph.
The new jeep with it's 2.0ltr V6 will get around 25mpg.

The Stray Cat

@Ian-:firedevil::firedevil::flamer: Better grab some marshmallows Mate!

So I took the kids to see Disney/pixar's Brave last week. I will say that it was definitely as we presumed it to be as a mix between Train your Dragon and Rapunzel but it actually wasn't that bad of a flick. The story was good and actually seemed rushed for a Disney flick.
LIKES-
Pixar has come a long way from the 1st Toy Story in their ability to create worlds in CG. There are a couple of scenes in the flick with water where you'd believe you were looking at a real seascape and the horses and bears in the flick had muscle movement in all of the right places at the right time.

The story although it's the typical Disney, "I hate being a princess, but I am too spoiled to realize I have it made." fair it's got a good story flow.

DISLIKES-
Story actually seemed rushed, like PIXAR had to finish fast so Disney could get it out in the theatres.

It had too much of the Predictable Disney Princess storyline

Really LIKED-
The HObbit trailer at the beginning!

I also watched the movie Safe House last night. Pretty good suspense flick

LIKES-
Lots of good action, shoot outs, car chases, the whole works
Had some real good plot twist, although they weren't hard to figure out, they were still interesting.
Denzel Washington, not a big fan of his, but he does play the part well in this flick.

DISLIKES-
Ryan Reynolds as the hero, star, whatever, can he just go back to doing rom coms and leave us alone in the action flick world now!

Some of the action scenes and car chases were too far fetch and made the movie a little comedic.

Some of the plot twist were predictable from the beginning.

Story actually seemed rushed, like PIXAR had to finish fast so Disney could get it out in the theatres.

It had too much of the Predictable Disney Princess storyline

Haha yeah, there are a lot of cool cars around. They usually only come out to play when there's a show on though :( These were at a show the local GM/Chrysler dealer had on Saturday. There were a lot of really nice cars there, including a 1970 Olds 442 W30 convertible with only 56 original miles. It was absolutely mint, and had the original sales receipt laminated on a poster.

Nice pictures of american muscle my newfie friend :nice:
Who would have thought that newfies have so much sweet american iron? :p

On another note, some friends of mine recently beat the (unofficial) world record for worlds fastest Volvo B20 engine in a vehicle ever.
A little info about the motor, it's a Volvo Amazon 2 litre gasoline 4cyl pushrod engine running 108 octane race gasoline running a powerglide transmission, with custom partially cement filled engine block (for strength), custom ported head, custom camshaft, weighted and balanced crank, pistons and pushrods, custom intake plenum, custom watercooled intercooler, custom exhaust manifold ending in a Volvo FH12 lorry turbodiesel turbo.

Per Åge, the guy that built the engine (driver/owner) simulated every part of the engine in a computer program, calculating intake runner width, length, plenum volum and flow, and exhaust tube length, intake/exhaust valve angles/size, combustion chamber size/shape, fuel injector chamber shape/size and alot of other things.

The computer program said around 400 hp at 0.9bar/13.05psi boost 400nm/295 lb-ft.
And at the first dyno they had @0.9 bar, it put out 404 hp, and 440nm/324lb-ft.

Awesome or what?

When they beat this record they were pushing over 2bar/29psi and close to 1000fwhp.

Quite awesome? :chug:

Nice vid FH :nice:

I've been lurking around for a few days - haven't had much free time this week.

Just when I thought I was getting things to settle down and get back some free time we've just had a kind of emergency with out next door neighbour - we were helping by offering to take the man of the house to hospital, he's had pancreatic cancer, all kinds of probs relating to that and the doctor who saw him this morning wanted him to go to hospital for a check-up as he had low blood pressure, I was taking a wheel-chair round and he collapsed in their garage... we called paramedics etc, he had apparently had a heart attack and has now passed away...

I'm still in a state of shock(sorry if that sounds arrogant but I've just watched a man I know well die before my eyes), but as it's obviously so much harder for his wife and children we've been keeping them company, helping out where we can etc so that's what I've been doing all afternoon...

So apologies if I'm not around as much as I would like but some things have to come before others...

:( no love for my 520...

Well, the air was blue a second ago. I went outside to fit my off road wheels and tyres to the new Vitara, i had the whole day planned. Go out, see if they fit, swap over the lift kit and extended rear shockers, then under seal it all, wheels and tyres on and hit a trail with the LR3 shorty...... So, they don't F%&$ing fit!! Nooooooooooooooooooooo

I've had them wheels for 8 years now, and it seems now i have to sell. The bloody tyres are near enough new too :( Not happy, not happy at all. Whilst i was sat on the floor f'ing and b'ing it started to pour down too.

So, selling the 15's and looking for some equally aggressive looking 16's to clear the callipers. :( I could cry.

I can't believe the amount insurance companies charge for young/new drivers these days. My first insurance was 648 for a Mk1 Ford Fiesta that was 19 years old.

I don't really want steel wheels over here with the salt and such, but it looks like i may be getting a wheel and tyre package, wheels being them cheap but aggressive looking steel modular wheels. I'd keep the wheels that are on it now, but i don't care much for the offset and i've promised them to my old boy for his diesel Vit.

Okay guys, believe it or not I have an RC question. A while back I mentioned that I was looking semi-seriously at the Kyosho Mad Force Kruizer VE as something of a return to the hobby. Alternatively, I'm considering a Traxxas E-Revo 1/16th non-brushless instead. Spending the difference between it (plus a little extra) and the BL version on a real charger, more batteries and a set of Grave Digger 1/16th tires (I like those better than the OEM Talon rubber) is more important to me than going insanely fast. (A good BL system can be acquired later.) I look at going mini as something that won't be as expensive long- or short-term (less mass X less "real" speed = fewer broken parts), compact, easily stored, and even possibly driven in the house. Plus it's something I've never done before, so there's some excitement in that.

On the other hand, 1/10th scale rigs are more impressive. I was watching a video of an actual E-Revo and compared it to the mini version, and the performance characteristics are more interesting in the big one: seeing what lots of mass and a boat-load of power does in even simple maneuvering. The Mad Force is getting harder to find, though.

I guess my question is what you guys might think - mini or not mini? Not asking for someone to make up my mind for me, just ideas or thoughts you guys might have.

Oggy
08-04-2012, 01:54 AM
Mini stuff can be real fun, like you said, they can be run in smaller areas, they can be just as fast as 1/10 stuff, they tend to brake less.

But, if like me you have big fingers, they can be hard to work on.

Ragnarok
08-04-2012, 02:11 AM
I don't have giant hands, but they are biggish. Definitely something I didn't take into consideration.

THE_JOKER
08-04-2012, 02:22 AM
I say the mini version.

A nice little car that doesn't take up much space when not in use. Is a tough an durable little bugger, and fun to use when the mood takes you.

I fancy a 1/16 slash myself tbh! I prefer them over the E-Revo, but that's just my preference.

SO... I say go for the mini E-Revo Rag! :chug:

Lee
08-04-2012, 06:22 AM
I'm considering another mini slash, my brushed one seemed quick, was durable and fun to drive. The slash is top heavy but the revo is better for that with a wider base. Do it!

May want to budget for a better motor too, the Titan 12t is a good motor but my last one seemed to die pretty quick, although it was lugging a full size slash over harsh terrain.

FunkyHunk
08-04-2012, 06:25 AM
I've got the 1/16 4x4 bl slash, it's a hewt! :nice:

Ragnarok
08-04-2012, 01:56 PM
I'm certainly leaning that way, especially with almost anything Kyosho being more difficult to get. Kinda makes a person wonder why they never got traction with their post-Great Planes strategy of self-distribution in the States the way Tamiya did when their deal with MRC ended.

I could get the MFKVE used, but that's the kind of rig I'd rather get first-hand. Big trucks tend to be run hard, and not knowing the level of abuse the thing may have received could just lead to something more expensive than buying one new.

One thing I haven't found is a body in 1/16th scale that I like. The stock E-Revo looks pretty good, but I prefer something more reality-based, and the closest I've been able to find is the Proline Ford F-150 Raptor, but the proportions are goofy (cab is too long, bed is too short). I'm sure I'll find something, though.

Thanks for the input, guys. :chug:

Lee
08-04-2012, 02:06 PM
Proline make a ford focus body, not sure how that'd look on a revo? Someone on here has retro fitted a midnight pumpkin shell to a slash and that looked fantastic.

Ragnarok
08-04-2012, 02:43 PM
If I went with a car body, I'd probably try to make the Proline Camaro GS fit. They also make a pretty nice VW Beetle shell, which I'd take grudgingly as an alternative, but I think I'd just go with another OEM shell if that was my choice. I'm sure an MP body would look great on there, but it's a touch too big for what I'd want. Now is when I wished that I had gone ahead and built my thermoforming rig. :cryin: :(

Well I had this Bigfoot body on this streched tlt chassis for awhile now but it never looked right with the modded new bright tires and wheels. Back in december I got a set of wild willy tires and rims for $10 on eBay (local guy so no shipping:willy). Well I finally got time to do some work on it and add the tires and the integy shocks. I still need to figure out how I want to secure the rear part of the body, but the tilt is operational. Anway here's the specs and some pics:

TLT streched to 8" wheelbase
Integy MSR4 shocks
Wild Willy tires and wheels
New Bright Bigfoot Body (not exactly correct since it is a F-150)
27T copperhead motor
Novak XRS esc
TQ3 modded with a rear steer toggle switch
2 Traxxas 2055 steering servos w/ TXT servo savers

Even though this was from a thread started four-and-a-half years ago, THIS is what I would love to do. More or less. I know I would have a blast with an E-Revo, but real, solid-axle MTs, not dune buggies on bovine growth hormones, have always been my favorite genre in the hobby. Lunchbox/Midnight Pumpkin/Wild Willy 2K tires look freaking awesome.

I'm thinking anything with TLT-sized axles (surely something more modern and has beefier diffs) and a smallish transmission could be a killer basis for a 1/16th-ish solid axle monster. I'm drooling just thinking about it. Thousands of guys have done it before, and I'm just wondering why it's taken me this long to start paying attention?

I've looked all over the place trying to get dimensions on those and all I can find are the inner and outer diameters of the rims.

I have a 1/16th Slash on the way now too. The only thing I'd recommend is getting as many small Traxxas batts as possible.

Okay, Axial owners. Will a blue body fit on a Honcho…er, mean, can I convert the guts of stock AX10 axles into functioning diffs? After pouring over instruction manuals for many of Axial's kits, I would assume the bevels in the EXO buggy could be used inside of the diff housing that normally has a locker in the AX10 gearbox.

I found the answer after looking more closely at part numbers. Yup. The AX10 and variants can receive EXO buggy bevel gears. The diff housing is the same part (AX80002). They also use the same diff ring gears (AX30392), so there shouldn't be any issues in converting the stock spool'ed AX10 axles to differentials. I gots ta have mah turnin' radius.

On the subject of axles, I'm kind of up in the air as to which to use for this 1/16th solid axle MT: Wheely King or AX10. I found a sticky in the "Tips, Tricks, FAQs" subforum in the "Scale 4x4 RC Trux" forum, as well as one in the General Discussion, that describes the width of most solid axles made commercially. Width may be an issue (there's about 3/8" difference, assuming the metric measurement given is accurate, because the conversion to imperial listed in that thread isn't), but durability trumps everything including scale. I also read up on the thread that shows how to narrow up WK axles, so with the right approach, too much axle length can be overcome.

Looks-wise, the RC4WD Blackwell axles (which I've been aware of for a while) would be perfect (they'd actually look a little too big, but that's okay). Too bad they're not available in plastic. $180/axle is far more than I want to spend. I think if my entire driveline sans motor cost approx. $200 I'd feel okay, but not for just one component. I'm thinking that an E-Revo 1/16 transmission will be perfect.

I'm still stewing over the body. If only that blasted reissued Ertl 1979 Ford F-250 model kit I bought years ago was 1/16th and not 1/25th. <_<

Bad dubstep is probably worse than bad trance, bad punk and bad rap all lumped into one terrifying wad of misery. I think of all the dubstep out there, probably only 5% is listenable and 1% is awesome. The rest is like chewing on aluminum foil hooked to a 12V flashlight battery while simultaneously trying to cram an old 28k dial-up modem - while it's dialing up - into your ear, and a six-year-old hopped up on Red Bull and Skittles pounds your gonads into flan with a rolling pin.

Haha, Ian! I have a ladder and still things like that, easier than walking all the way to the barn and then all of the way to the roof to do what needs to be done!

Rag, not sure what dimensions you were looking for on the GD 1/16 tires but they are 2.25" wide and 4" tall. Can't measure the wheel as they are factory glued. They surprising grab pretty damn good for what they are! Let me know if you need anything else on her.

Ragnarok
08-06-2012, 10:49 PM
Thanks a bunch! The rims are the only dimensions I've been able to find anywhere, so I definitely don't need those. 4" x 2.25"? Interesting. The diameter is actually pretty close to true 1/16th scale. 66"/16 = 4.125". Width-wise they're a little narrow, but that's still okay. (43"/16 = 2.6875".) I know why they did it - narrow tires have less rolling resistance. And less rubber means less rubber. :lolbeat:

If I go with the E-Revo before I scratch-build that solid-axle MT (which is a possibility), I'll probably shoe it up with a set of Digger 1/16th tires. Lunchbox tires are pretty dead-on 1/16th for diameter as well, but their rims are too tall. I also dislike the full offset of those rims - would rather have neutral-offset rims like the Clod. Plus the number of treads is too few and they're too thick. The best I've seen for this is actually the tires on the old Losi Raminator nitro 1/8th (here we go - they're actually 1/10th, regardless of what Losi's marketing dorks say it is), which had the perfect tire height, width, tread number, tread thickness, and tread angle. They only inconsistent part was the rim diameter, which was 3.2" instead of 2.5" or 2.6" as it should be, but they used those because that's what works with the 4WIS suspension of the LST platform, and it's what all the other trucks of that size use. The tires on the 1/16th and "1/10th" (5" tires are actually 1/13 of 66") Traxxas Diggers look really good as well. They have the bonus of that carved-on look. The "compound" rim diameter on the 1/16th Digger doesn't bug me, at least not on a machine this small. It's a solution to a mechanical need with those big steering knuckles.

About that 1/16th issue, I was looking at Traxxas' Boss VXL of the alleged same scale, and it actually scaled out to anywhere from almost 1/13th to slightly bigger than 1/11th. Some numbers:

Real 2013 Mustang wheelbase: 107.1"
Traxxas 1/16th Mustang wheelbase: 8.1"
Factor: 13.222

Real 2013 Mustang length: 188.1"
Traxxas 1/16th Mustang length: 14.7"
Factor: 12.795

Real 2013 Mustang width: 80.1"
Traxxas 1/16th Mustang width: 7.3"
Factor: 10.972 <-- WTH?!?

Real 2013 Mustang height: 55.8"
Traxxas 1/16th Mustang height: 4.72"
Factor: 11.822

I guess I'm overly pedantic about the scale declared by model companies, but still, if they cartoonify the proportions like this, the car looks like a toy and not a miniature version of the real thing. Yeah, it looks like a cool caricature, but it's not 1/16 at all. The whacked-out policy of RC companies making the cars bigger than their stated scale and the trucks smaller than their stated scale continues on into the mini scales. (Except for the Digger 1/16th - it's pretty diggy-dang close in length, height, wheelbase, and tire size.)

Sorry for the rant. In spite of how I stated things, I'm not angry about any of it. I have to be careful because I seem to remember starting a little kerfuffle in the old days of RCMT when I went off on my problems with how "scale" is presented by RC companies. :eager:

Winblows 8 is going to suck so bad that it'll make Vista look like the freaking moon landing. When guys like Gabe Newell (Valve), Rob Pardo (Blizzard), and other industry giants say that Windows 8 is a catastrophe/disaster/the end of days (depending on who's being quoted) for developer and end-user alike, then a person tends to pay a little closer attention.

Mac OS X actually beat MS to the punch on this closed-system paradigm, but since 80 to 90% of users are on the Windows Wagon, the complaints will be more vocal from that side of the fence. The only place left is Linux. I'm as in love with this idea as anyone could be, but like this video says…Linux sucks. For content creators, anyway.

"Ahh. Okay. It booted up fine, now…just…don't…touch…anything. AAAAAHHHH!! BSOD?!? Did I just bump the desk with my knee?!? No! NO! NOOOOO!!!!! FFFFFUUUUUUU…"

:troll:

When redhat went to make only corporate versions I stopped using it, cause it was the only distro I liked, and knew how it worked :P
It was amazingly stable and great when I used the shell/window handler called Afterstep.
It was around the days when dialup was the only way of going online.
I almost miss those days :nice:

I know one thing. When I can run all of my music software without latency problems, and when I can find proper equivalents to Illustrator, Photoshop, and Flash (or better yet, if Adobe began supporting the Penguin) I will move to Linux immediately. I don't care that I'd have to pay for software. What matters is there would be no gatekeeper or nanny telling me where I had to get my applications, or "how far off the reservation" I would be allowed to go.

You know, that artist's rendering doesn't help things because too many people are going to take that as "gospel" before the truth is really known about it. Most scienticians are pretty sure it's simply some kind of geological phenomena rather than a Millennium Falcon knockoff that carried off Jimmy Hoffa, which is the most likely answer, but that's also an assumption made without all of the facts.

Now, having said that, do I think that particular "Ivory Tower Wizards" within the realm of science and academia repress a great deal of what is actually discovered to fit a particular agenda? Yes. Also, do I think that those more prone to a world view made up of mostly, or entirely, conspiracy theories tend to jump the gun too quickly on stuff like this? Also yes.

So…I guess my point is that no one should make too many assumptions until a complete study is made and published. (Assuming, of course, that what you're being told is in fact the truth. Oh man…it's like an M.C. Escher woodblock print.) It DEFINITELY needs to explored because it really is too weird to ignore. I'm betting One-Pac is in there. :nice:

well this is kinda the problem with OS's atm - no one actually has it right or perfect for the next gen.

You might cynically say no-one ever has got it 100% right, but at least theres been a stable version of windows or linux or something to fall back on...

Win 8 looks like like MS's answer to iOS....fine for mobile devices but why do I need that on my PC?! and even as a mobile OS...its not going to match or exceed iOS...

<Ahem> Now with a more appropriate response to your post. Absolutely, MS is trying to do the same as Apple by the tabletifying their OS. (I'm sure I've ranted on about this before.) It's a dumbing down of a serious computer interface because there's the notion that everyone wants to pretend they're in Minority Report. There are those people, but they're in a vastly marginalized, if not outright insignificant minority. (CWUTIDIDTHAR?)

Also, I'm not one of those that would go so far as to say no one's gotten it right. (I'm sure some will - there are those that complain about everything.) Sure, there's no perfect OS that got everything right. It's usually a case of "this is good enough, it works well, and I'm comfortable here," which is exactly where I am with Mac OS X 10.6.8. The problem is either a piece of software that a person needs, or a new chunk of hardware that a person wants, forces one to upgrade to the latest thing from House Redmond or House Cupertino. It's a condition that should be expected when one understands technology, but when the compulsory upgrade is painful, enraging, and even offensive because the arrogance of either Houses has either produced something grossly restrictive in choice for the end-user or maybe even broken (the former for Apple, both for MS)…then what does a person do?

The notion that there's a far green country under a hastening sunrise in the form of Linux is a wonderful thought. For a lot people who are either just doing the most basic of computer usage (email, web browsing), or are part of an elite strike force of admin hax0rz that dream in terminal code, it may indeed be that. But for people who are content creators in any serious fashion, like the dedicated novice (me) or the professional (the future me?), it's almost a non-option. I'm really hoping that Bitwig (whenever it emerges out of Beta) can be something of a white knight application for musicians. If it can be a bug-free, low-latency DAW that's intuitive and has the ability to handle commercial VST instruments and other plugins, then I'm half-way there to being a Linux evangelist. I also need graphics-related stuff that GIMP on its own can't fulfill. I have been on OSalt.com to research, so I am trying to learn what all is out there so I can have a more educated opinion on what will work and what I still need for full conversion. ;)

My plan was a box of standard ones then progress to try others, public has normal and chocolate from what I found
Wise move. :nice: I also suggest trying the raspberry Zingers, which are sort of a cousin to Twinkies (used to be a competing product before Hostess bought out Dolly Madison). They're flippin' awesome, too. I could go for some right now…

Well this is my issue - where do I go when I need to "upgrade" in order to play the latest games, use the latest hardware or run the newest version of photoshop?

All I know is Win8 aint it as it stands, I can hope that maybe a service pack or further revision (Windows 9?) might improve matters but it is just a 'hope'.

I've used Linux professionaly but not at home, its just fine for servers but tbh given a choice I actually prefer UNIX for that type of stuff if you have the hardware available. As for making it a viable alternative for MAC OS/Windows I don't know - I havent looked into the newer GUI versions lately so I wont make statements based on older versions and conjecture.

Anyhoo in other news I think somethings gone wrong - the sky must be falling or something like that because there are no clouds, the sky seems to have turned blue?! and theres a big ball of fire in the sky making it warm/hot. It's totally obliterated the early morning frost we had...

My gut tells me that the toyified closed-system paradigm is only going to get worse. The good thing about this disgruntled user base ready to abandon a sinking ship is it might give Linux devs the incentive to get more aggressive with their efforts, including accepting that capitalism isn't entirely a bad thing.

The only ones I've worked with are Ubuntu 10.something and Linux Mint 11, which I actually really liked. The guys at Valve are in the middle of porting have ported Steam over to Linux (which versions I have no idea, probably Ubuntu versions are listed here (https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Steam_under_Linux)) which is a pretty good start for gaming and might make other devs wake the hell up(!). WINE is an option, but I don't know how universal it is when employed for current games.

There is something out there that's kind of interesting for musicians that I may have to try when I feel I can spare the $100 - Studio 13.37. It's a real time Linux that runs off a USB stick that's showing some promise. It seems to be teething at bit right now. It looks to be a direct competitor for Indamixx, another custom Linux-for-musicians (although Indamixx looks more like it's targeting DJs and rap artists). The app called Bitwig that I mentioned before is intended for Ubuntu or Kubuntu (I'll have to go back and research that) so they're going for more of a "mainstream" Linux user base. Hopefully integrating real world plugins with Ub will not be the nightmare it has been in the past.

Win 8 will follow the rule that only every-other Win release is any good...

Windows 3.1x (1992) - Good
Windows 95 (1995) - Mixed bag, at the beginning it sucked
Windows 98 (1998) - Good
Windows ME (2000) - Sucked (hard)
Windows XP (2001) - Good
Windows Vista (2006) - Sucked although not as hard as ME
Windows 7 (2009) - Good
Windows 8 (2012?) - ???

Back to OS-aggeddon, for those that are curious about the way Apple's handling this asinine closed-door approach to computing (which MS promises to do and, with previous experience as evidence, will make this method even worse), here's a blog entry with a bunch of other users piping in with their anxieties. It's music application specific, but as you read it just replace "Logic" with every application you use, and "AudioUnits" with any plug-in format you can possibly think of, because it affects everything about the software you purchase, download, interact with, etc.

http://www.analogindustries.com/blog/entry.php?blogid=1343315550989

There is some R-rated language (that's how this particular blogger rolls), but this guy is a serious developer in the music app scene and knows what he's talking about. The comments on the second page of comments makes the point of the whole thing. To summarize, it's not the current rev that's to be worried about - it's what it will lead to in the long term with this initial step. Mac OS X 10.9 (probably will be called Manx, which is one letter away from "Marx") and Windows 8 SP3 or Win. 9 will be the ones to truly fear.
