All to do with the tech in them I guess, multi touch screens/basic screens. Memory amounts be it HDD, or RAM etc.

Technically, an iPad is a tablet, but like the old "what's the difference between a Mac and a PC?" question it all comes down to two things - the OS and how the devices are made. Apple develops their own OS as well as manufactures their own hardware (yeah, technically it's Foxconn and other suppliers). The iPad has that insane screen resolution, and all surfaces your hands touch are solid aluminum and glass. Most tablets are more cheaply made (plastic chassis with plastic screen on the low-rent rendezvous versions, glass on the nicer ones) and typically use some version of Android, an OS that is completely fractured with five or six different variations all inhabiting the same space. This OS diversity makes it difficult for developers to know if their applications will work with the largest user base possible. Apple offers a device that tends to be a more unified platform for a given amount of time.

Something on the horizon is the MS Surface/Windows 8 RT platform, which could do one of two things: either it will give a real alternative OS to Apple's iOS and hopefully get Google to get their ducks in a row and keep Android more unified, OR it will lead to an even more fractured landscape, further confounding the marketplace.

The reason Apple can charge such a premium is the quality of materials. However, the "lifestyle" status of the brand name shouldn't be ignored. It may not be cheap to build, but it's also a fashion symbol. How many people bought one to be part of the cool kids? There will be a smaller, less expensive iPad (~7" screen) unveiled at a special event in about a week, so that should shake things up a bit.

The only real iPad alternative I know of is the Samsung Galaxy Tablet 2 10.1". Maximum PC only had one beef with the device - minimal internal storage - but they loved it. One thing to keep in mind, though, is it's similarly priced to Apple's appliance. <-- Double-checked…wrong magazine and wrong tablet.

Speaking just from a musician's standpoint, iOS has a massive advantage in that it was engineered to handle MIDI and multitrack audio data from the beginning, with both handled in incredibly low latency. Android can't handle much beyond just MP3 playback. The iPad can run some very sophisticated recording, sequencing, synthesizer, and controller applications that Android could never do without a complete redo, but I realize this isn't an important point to everyone.

Having said all of the positive things about Apple's rig, I still won't own one until I can break the OS to kill every single privacy invading component in an iPad. No such process exists, so I'll abstain.

Full disclosure: I use Mac OS X, but I'm not an iKool-Aid drinker, or in other words, "I've tried Apple, but I didn't inhale." :nice: I despise Apple's Marxist approach to application development.

Thanks for the answers fellas! THe reason I ask is, my daughter wants a tablet for Christmas. She said she'd like an Ipad but the school doesn't allow Ipads in class but they can use their tablets for research or reading. So I was confused because I thought they both had the same basic capabilities.

By the way, Rag I love the new Avatar! Now that is the Hulk I knew and loved as a kid!

Then I'd definitely recommend the newest big Samsung Galaxy tablet if it fits budget-wise. The teacher probably sees non-iPad devices as "implements of learning" and iPads as "social networking toys." Frankly, they're both toys.

By the way, Rag I love the new Avatar! Now that is the Hulk I knew and loved as a kid!
Thanks. :) For those that don't know, this was from a scene from the episode called "The First" where Banner looks for a scientist who has cured gamma affliction and then discovers he's not the first gamma monster. The guy that had been "Hulked" was cured (a bitter old groundskeeper), but the scientist who created it had been killed, and Banner in trying to compile the dead scientist's findings unwittingly unleashes the old monster again. And then some sheriff's deputies cure the bad guy Hulk with repeated .38 caliber lead injections. The other creature was played by Dick Durock (Swamp Thing) who looked real dang freaky in full makeup.

85608

It was actually a pretty cool episode. A two-parter that aired during spring sweeps, I suppose. It showed what happens when the power Banner discovered on his own is wielded by someone who is less than benevolent. It's probably on YouTube.

As far as the tablet debate, The Ipad just works.
I've heard may others being troubled with malfunctioning samsung and other brand tablets.
The ipad works and will continue to work many years later.
I bought the first gen Ipad 64gb 3g when it was released, and it has never missed a beat. Ever.

Also, we've had -7c during nights, and sun and clear weather with maybe 3-4c, but no snow.

^ I have no idea what's happening to Ms. Potts in the preview pic above. At first I thought it was an ejection seat and she's bracing for liftoff, but maybe it's a scene of torture. Homie don't play dat. (In other words, I don't dig that. Does the story really need to go there?)

Supposedly "Iron Patriot" is in the movie. I have no idea who that is - (TSC? - I'm looking at you) - but this could be interesting. Ben Kingsley is usually passable as the bad guy (Sneakers, Prince of Persia, etc.). I'm hoping this is better than the first two. I didn't hate them and didn't think they were terrible films, but they were lacking in what they could have delivered.

He pimped the suit with new colors?

It's a new version of the suit is all I know. The page I saw this video on calls it the "Mark XLVII." (Mark 47? Is he up that far in his revisions?)

85649

Trailer doesn't give much does it!.
It's a "trailer for the trailer." Teasers like this rarely give anything up. Just there to boost the hype for the hype that's forthcoming. The actual trailer debuts on Tuesday.

Here's a different suit from the shoot along with Iron Patriot that hit the internet three weeks ago.

85650

No details on just how this works (I did a little research - IP was something involved with Norman Osborne) but most people are theorizing that it's just a new look for War Machine. Others are suggesting Captain America's going to be wearing it, but unless RDJr's in-suit double is actually a lot taller than him, I suspect it's War Machine (Don Cheadle is also not very tall) with a new lick of paint. Chris Evans is about four inches taller than RDJr, so the size of the suits doesn't jibe with the actual difference in the actors's heights.

THE_JOKER
10-22-2012, 04:38 AM
It is Captain Americas colours though, star an all. Cool looking scheme!.

Maybe the whole Mark 47 thing is to make it like he's real, an in between movies he's working away? lol. I dunno, but that's a lot of suits. I liked his quote from Avengers when he is returning to his Stark building to see Loki, and to pick up his new suit, he tells Jarvis to "skip the spinning rims" lol.

The Stray Cat
10-22-2012, 07:55 AM
Ok, First the War Machine being the exact replica of the Mark IM suits is the reason why Cheadle got in and Terrence Howard was let go. In the comic IP was not a reinvention of War Machine but they can spin it that way I guess for the movie. Osborn is the guy who became IP as a sarcastic nod to IM and Cap. It was during his tenure as the new Avengers (Dark Avengers) leader.
"Osborn's next order of business was setting up his own new team of Avengers. He was able to recruit Ares, The Sentry, and Marvel Boy (now calling himself Captain Marvel), as well as giving his former Thunderbolts new identities (Moonstone became Ms. Marvel, Venom became Spider-Man, Bullseye became Hawkeye, and the addition of Daken who took the identity of Wolverine). With the help of Ghost, Osborn was able to break into one of Tony Stark's armories and create his own armored suit, fusing elements of the design of both Tony Stark's "Extremis" suit and the Captain America's costume, naming his new super-"hero" persona the Iron Patriot."

jake10684
10-22-2012, 03:30 PM
My nerd sense was tingling...

Possible spoilers ahead as well so read at your own risk.

I've read that the 'new' suit is indeed meant to be Iron Patriot, however, due to the fact that Sony owns the rights to the characters in the original Spiderman movie, they couldn't use Osborn as the Iron Patriot, so they had to sort of "invent" a new villain which, from what I've read is supposed to be some strange combination of a couple of different Iron Man-universe villains.

We also already know that the Mandarin will be in this movie, so it's possible there's some sort of *******ized (can I use that word here?) connection there. I've also heard that Firepower and Coldblood-7 will make appearances.

I've also read that it is in fact just a repainted version of War Machine who acts as a body guard and escort to the Vice President on a trip to China where part of the film is supposed to take place which would also explain where the Mandarin fits in. I'm not really buying this yet unless War Machine got streamlined and upgraded.

Not sure what sort of contraption Pepper was strapped in to in that teaser, but I'm sure we'll see a little more in the full trailer. I'm holding out for the Rescue Armor!

As for the Mark 47 suit, there is speculation that this could be the nano-suit which is essentially made up of millions of nano-bots housed just under Tony's skin that allows him to call upon the exoskeleton at-will.

It's also been (probably more accurately) speculated that this Mark 47 suit will allow him to (through a neural interface) control 40 additional 'drone' suits in unison to help him defeat the Extremis-enhanced enemies.

It's also possible that's it's both. This could also mean that at some point in the future we could see the sentient version of the armor play in to the story.

Ok. My head hurts now. Back to my cave.

85666

I've got my money on IP being War Machine. The drone theory might work, too. To add to what you said, the licensing for anything Spider-Man related would be a nightmare, so the origins of IP wouldn't be possible.

On that note, one of the things about The Avengers that I found kind of interesting is that the complete rights to the Hulk were very quietly reverted back to Marvel from Universal. I never saw a press release or anything on the subject.

Ragnarok
10-22-2012, 05:58 PM
I should also add that I hope they don't pull a Spider-Man 3 with IM3 by cramming far too many bad guys into the hopper. This may be Iron Man's last solo movie, and going out with a whimper would be a serious disservice to the character. SM3 couldn't decide if Venom, Sand Man, or Goblin Jr. was the main villain. Should'a just been Venom, and cast ANYONE other than Topher Grace as Eddie Brock. I know they were trying to get the bad guy analog of Peter Parker to do the whole the "broken reflection" thing, but TG su-diddly-ucks.

Here it is: http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/marvel/ironman3/

Well, after watching the official trailer and reading a bit more, I can make a few more assumptions and raise a few more questions.

Towards the beginning, they're definitely hinting at a potential nano-suit, but a more believable version. The contraption on Tony's head in a later scene adds weight to this.

The scene where Tony and Pepper are in bed and a suit grabs her could either be the sentient suit or just a bad dream (editing can make you believe anything).

After reading more, the Mandarin is the main villain and the other two I mentioned by name, Firepower and Coldblood-7, are probably just going to be names or codenames given to two Extremis-enhanced henchmen, possibly/probably Mandarin's top men, and the names are just a nod to the comic books. I'd be surprised if the actual names were ever said in the movie; maybe just written, stamped, or on a nametag somewhere?

Also, who I'll refer to as "Iron Patriot" in quotes until we get confirmation of who that is, is looking more convincing as being a rebuilt War Machine given the red eyes and red, squared reactor in the chest. Since Tony fairly willingly gave over the War Machine suit and trusts Rhodey, it's reasonable that Tony would continue to upgrade that suit as well, though not to the same degree as his own suits.

It's hard to get much more out of the trailer, but I'm sure someone out there will be able to.

It's difficult to get anything more out of this particular trailer.

EDIT: Look at the picture of IP above. Look at the left forearm. Air Force. It's War Machine.

My understanding there is that Stan Lee, the man, has no problem at all with anyone or anything, encouraging the directions the movies have been going and fully cooperating with the studios and directors, even having cameos in every Marvel movie.

It's Stan Lee Inc. that's doing all the suing. A company Stan Lee is no longer associated with and he regrets having his name attached to it. Stan Lee has cashed out and retired, but the companies he founded aren't being run by the nicest people right now.

I think that's an important distinction to make.

Edit: Plus, I think Disney is the one trying to do all the reining-in right now since they own Marvel.

Jake, you're correct, it was Stan Lee inc. I think it's ridiculous how far out these comic characters have gotten; it's the same for the DC verse also. Too many companies, artist, studios have all gottent heir rights to these characters and it's made a big mess. Especially for movies when a comic movie needs to do a character correctly they can't because some other studio has the rights until 2018 or whatever.

Yeah, the name of the company is "Stan Lee Media, Inc.," aka SLMI. Funny coincidence, eh? What it amounts to is SLMI claims that they own every Stan Lee property ever, but the actual agreement amounted to SLMI gaining whatever Stan Lee came up with while he was with SLMI, which amounts to bupkis. It's copyright trolling, and SLMI is really just out there to make a mess in the courts to pump Disney for a few million bucks in a sham settlement. Disney has the fiercest lawyers on the planet, so I doubt SLMI will get anything other than a monstrous bill for Disney's attorney fees, providing Disney doesn't counter-sue. That's where things could get interesting.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Time Warner pull a Disney and eat up DC. The only DC property that I'm aware of that they didn't do in the last several years was RED. The key word in that previous statement was "aware" - I'm sure there are others, but so many have been WB-produced/released/distributed that I think it could happen.

It's a direct sequel to Conan the Barbarian, ignoring Conan the Destroyer and Conan the Hawaiian. This is Arnold's equivalent to Stallone's final Rocky or Rambo films. The first one was an interesting film on a lot of levels. The sequel felt like a made-for-TV movie that should have starred Miles O'Keeffe, and I have no interest in seeing the latest one. If Conan's going to be at retirement age and still fancies himself a ladies man, maybe it should be called Conan the Cialis Buyer.

Seems like pure idiocy to me - then again I dont drink many energy drinks as I know exactly what they do to me. Not sure sueing is the right answer either... obviously by all means plaster the can with health warnings and spell out the ingredients and what they can do.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/14yearold-girl-dies-of-heart-attack-after-drinking-two-cans-of-highcaffeine-monster-energy-drink-on-consecutive-days-8222849.html

The new Conan seems like it will be hard to avoid parodying it own parody, of the toothless old and wrinkled "Cohen the barbarian" in the discwolrd novels(and the colour of magic TV shows that Sky did based on the first two books), which was of course supposed to be like 'what if conan got old?' to begin with(and with the first book published in 1983, you can't accuse Terry Pratchett of stealing this idea). When you add that to Arnie now looking rather scrawny and old compared to his former glory I can see it being a bit of a farce.

Looking forwards to GTA V - loved the original San Andreas, so this update should be awesome. Not really looking forwards to the usual 6 months console/eggbox exclusive period before I can play on PC though <_<

Some carefully placed wardrobe and HGH. That's all he needs. Stallone used it in all of his most recent movies (Rocky Balboa, Rambo, both Expendables, and his upcoming Bullet to the Head). He looks a little weird, but he is "big," muscularly anyway.

The trouble I have with things like this is that the parents go after the companies. Well where were you when you were supposed to be parenting. Like parents getting upset with gun manufacturers when a little kid shoots someone accidentally. Well if the PARENTS didn't have a loaded gun in there house unsecured then the kid wouldn't have gotten to it. It's not th manufacturer or seller's fault most often unfortunately in our society someone other than ourselves is who we want to blame.

By the way, proof that PJ's trolls can talk in the latest Hobbit TV ad.

I spent about thirty minutes last night trying to get caught up on just who is what in the gaggle of dwarves in the film. I think I can keep it straight now. Before it didn't mean much. Not sure what to think of Bifur - the one that has the axe fragment embedded in his forehead. The Khuzdul language coach for that guy has his/her work cut out for him/her.

Here's the list I went by. Not sure if this is canon to the book, but it appears that it's how their characters work out for the movies. http://listnation.blogspot.com/2012/10/the-12-dwarves-of-hobbit.html

I also read an interview with Richard Armitage, the actor that's playing Thorin, over at Collider. It's pretty interesting.

THe three trolls in the Hobbit are different than the ones seen in the LOTR trilogyas they have spent their entire lives living in close proximity to the people of Middle Earth. Some of the trolls in Sauron's and before him their creator Melkor could speak the basics of the black language of the orcs, others were so dumb they couldn't speak at all, while some as in the three met by Bilbo and the Dwarves were able to speak the Westron language crudely.

Out of curiosity I tried a can of monster energy yesterday, I know for some that would be weird - read about girl dieing from drinking it, goes out to buy some...

Anyhoo I quite enjoyed it - had a 500ml can at lunchtime, did weightlifting 2 hours later and that went better than ever so I have to assume the "energy" part of the energy drink is not actually marketing bullcrap. Needless to say I did not die of heart failure though :poke:

I am looking forwards to the Hobbit films, I think they should be reasonable as they are splitting it into two films there's less of an excuse for skipping stuff this time around. The trolls seem to be accurate to the books from what I've seen, they 'debated' how to cook Bilbo for so long that the sun came up and turned them to stone - I believe the agrument was aided and abetted by Gandalf mimicking the trolls voices so that one would always seem to disagree, its been a while since I read it though so please correct me if I am wrong ^_^

My unannounced review of Snow White and the Huntsman.

The basic premise of the movie is there's a kingdom, and the king and queen have a beautiful daughter who embodies all the beauty and goodness of the world - Snow White. About the time Snow is eight or nine, a nasty winter comes in and the queen dies, leaving her father lost and sad. He's drawn into a big battle with black magic soldiers that shatter like glass when struck. When the glass army is vanquished, the king's men find a prison wagon in the middle of the battlefield. In it is a beautiful woman who was ostensibly the magic army's prisoner. The king takes her back to his castle and marries her the next day, making her his new queen. Once in their bedchamber, she drives a foot-long blade into his chest. Then she kills everyone in the walls of the city state, except for Snow. Snow is to spend the rest of her life in a tower prison. And it goes from there.

You find that this queen is immortal on condition that she consumes youth and beauty. Her perpetual beauty is something she acknowledges is a curse, yet she fights with her life to protect it, often wielding it as a weapon. You find out this isn't the only kingdom she's overthrown and poisoned. She's like a parasite that moves from host to host, using her beauty to seduce, and using her hatred, which seems to be predominantly of men, to destroy and leave all in ruin.

This movie succeeds really on only two counts. One, is its effectiveness in establishing the evil queen, showing just how malicious and terrifying she is, and where here menace and motivations come from. The other is how it handles the Huntsman. He's not particularly heavily nuanced, but his character works very well. However, you can't make a stool stand on its own with only two legs. On to the summaries…

What I liked:
Chris Hemsworth, the Huntsman, is actually a decent actor, and it shows in spite of this lump of dump movie. His portrayal of Thor was more than adequate in Thor and I felt was better yet in The Avengers. In this, he sort of looks like Thor (long hair, beard) but he's really a different animal. He's emotionally crippled for having lost his wife after returning from war. He loathed himself, but she saw something greater in him, so when she died, he returned to this damaged, unlovable thing. However, we are required to suspend more disbelief than we should when he tells Snow that she reminds him of his deceased wife.

Charlize Theron as the evil Queen Ravenna is still the most compelling thing about this movie. Holy heck, this woman is gorgeous. Her beauty becomes something to fear very quickly. The problem is her presence and significance is grotesquely undermined by Kristen Stewart's lifeless, constipated performance, but I'll get to that later on. Like all monsters, she's a victim of things beyond her control and she chose hate instead of redemption. I will say they took her bloodthirst a little too far with showing her eating the hearts of disemboweled birds. That was the most disturbing scene for me. I felt vastly more compassion for the birds than Snow with confronted with the Queens obsession with extracting Snow White's heart, something that's always been part of the Snow White mythos.

What I LOATHED:
I use the word "loathed" because there's no middle ground here with my my biggest contention as far as I'm concerned. There are two words that absolutely ruined this film for me: Kristen Stewart. Like Michael J. Nelson said about her, it's really hard to tell what she's thinking because regardless of what she's trying to emote she always just looks nauseous. She looks like an emaciated James MacAvoy in a girl-wig, only without any talent. Or flesh. She's not an attractive actress, but vastly more important, she's not a talented actress. In this she looks like a corpse with dysentery. Her appeal to audiences completely escapes me and how she manages to continue to get cast in high profile films is beyond my comprehension. Anyone else care to tell me why? What escapes me even more is how the director would abandon ship on his wife and children to play "hide the sausage" with this vacuous, pointy gutter snipe. In her newest film, based on what I've read, one of the most notable events in it is where she gives simultaneous handjobs to a pair of guys in a car. Stay classy, Krissy. :nice: However, with her dearth of talent when given anything more challenging than playing a blinking, stammering, unlikeable high-school girl caught in a love triangle between an androgynous sparkly vampire homo and a shirtless werewolf made mostly eyebrow ridge, maybe "driving a stick" is where she's best suited?

I can understand contrasting Ms. Theron's sinister beauty with a slightly more unconventional, "purer but imperfect" beauty, but this is something that not even Special K has. What's interesting is the little girl who plays Snow as a child is vastly better and more appropriate for the role than who plays her as a young adult. That's quite a rare thing to happen in movies like this. If they could have cast someone as good as the young girl in the part of the full-grown Snow, I could forgive most of the other transgressions this movie committed.

Speaking of which, another component that I found aggravating is the near plagiaristic nature of the film. I saw almost "word for word" ripoffs from Fellowship of the Ring (I'll let the ravens pass, but I know I saw the cast walking past Ireland's version of Weathertop), Never Ending Story (losing the horse in the black quicksand), Pan's Labyrinth (dear goodness - too many to name, but I will admit that the bridge troll was actually a pretty cool design), and, of all things, Princess Mononoke. The last one was the scene where Snow meets the "white hart." When one of the dwarves said, "This has never been seen before," all I could say was "YES IT HAS! CAN I GO NOW?" The white stag is a ripoff of the Spirit of the Forest from Mononoke. Although this was less disturbing than the semi-human face of the thing from Mononoke. And then when the thing is shot with an arrow, I said, "Yup, saw that too." It was 1:30AM and everyone here is sick, so I was in a particularly foul mood. Probably what was the coup de grace for my tolerance was Snow's artificial "rally the troops" speech to get a bunch of sweaty bearded men in tin suits to die for her. I accepted it in Lord of the Rings and Kingdom of Heaven because they were well done and appropriate to the story, but ever since anything remotely resembling this kind of cheerleading makes running a cheese grater over my bare kneecap seem like a more viable alternative. Aaaaaaaaaaaaand then we see Snow in full armor on the back of a horse, riding to lay siege to her dead dad's castle like a battle-hardened warrior. You're kidding me, right movie? She's been locked away in a tower for ten years, and how did she all of a sudden acquire battle tactics and swordsmanship? I could accept it with Shrek - a satirical, children's animated film - but not this "gritty, based-in-reality faerie tale." I should also add that she doesn't look determined. Nope. Once again, just nauseous. Or constipated. It's kinda hard to tell.

There were some other problems I had, although they were comparatively minor. I thought the way the seven dwarves were handled looked really weird. It's a similar process that was used in making Chris Evans scrawnified for Captain America and the enhugeing of Helena Bonham-Carter's head for Alice in Wonderland. However, it's really inconsistent and nowhere near as seamless as the two examples I just cited. Watch Ian McShane's character as he's looking out of the sewer grate into the courtyard, and his arms are normal length (or at least longer than they are in most other scenes). More importantly, though, none of the dwarves stand out as interesting or even likable. Their leader, played by Bob Hoskins, and Ray Winstone's character would probably be the closest to being standouts, but that's as much generosity as I'll give them. The rest were simply annoying.

Content:
Sexual Content: Not a lot, but there are a couple of things to be aware of. When Snow's father and Ravenna are together and alone the first time, he's on top of her while she talks softly, foreshadowing her violence five seconds later where she rolls over and drives a bigassed knife into the king's chest. We also see the evil queen naked from the back (above the waist) as she submerges herself in a large bath of…something white. Looks like all weather white semi-gloss latex house paint, but it may supposed to be cream or something. Whatever it is, it's actually CGI. It's symbolic that she's going to take Snow's life at some point.

Violence/Gore: Quite a bit of violence and some gore (those poor birds), but most of what's disturbing are scary images, ie. the Queen sucking the life out of young girls, and the semi-hallucinations (which were poorly slapped together in twitchy, incongruent music video fashion) Snow has upon her arrival the Fire Swamp…I mean, Dark Forest. Queen Ravenna's brother - who she may or may not have an inappropriate relationship with - is sickening and menacing. Definitely not for children under 12 or 13.

Language: Nothing to speak of. There's an instance of "faerie tale equivalence" to something vulgar from one of the dwarves, but nothing memorable.

Final Summary:
My final grade is two Bacons and a Banana (equivalent to two-and-a-half Bacons) out of five. I would have given it four out of five Bacons had the part of Snow White been played by ANYONE other than Kristen Stewart. I almost might have taken James MacAvoy in a girl-wig over K-Stew, but that would have meant seeing some gay kissing. Actually, the more I think about it, with all of the things I disliked, in reality it was Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth that saved this movie from being One Bacon out of Five. If there was ever a movie in recent memory that needed to lifted off the ground by its collar and violently slapped stupid for falling so ridiculously short of the potential an adaptation of this story could have had, it was this. The one thing I'm grateful for is that the revised plan in extending this to two more films is that Snow White's character is abandoned entirely and the Huntsman is the main guy.

Rag, you gave that movie more credit than even I did. And I'm usually fairly generous with my movie ratings. Of course my rating system is typically "best movie ever" or "it was alright". That particular movie actually got a "this is crap, why are we watching this?" out of me.

I can't completely recall, but I seem to remember that at least Snow was wearing semi-accurate armor in the scene you mentioned. No "chainmail bikini" syndrome, so at least that was refreshing.

I think that makes for heavy reading, I probably need to read it at least three four times before I get the full grasp of the history. Sometimes I have to read entire sections two times before understanding it.
I also read it in English, to get a better grasp of the language.
I guess it is written a bit complicated, but the language was a bit more complicated at the time The Silmarillion was written.
Thank god for the Ipad (and epub-versions of tolkiens works) which gives me the ability to select words and look up definitions and meaning.

All of the books I read is in English, I feel much usually gets lost in translation, except for books written in Norwegian though :p

It's practically a feature-length film if you watch them all back to back; just shy of 90 minutes. It's not perfect, but as a Halo fan, it's a pretty awesome series; even better if you've read the books. Not sure how well it will play out for people unfamiliar with the Halo-verse as this was meant more for people who already know what's going on, but it's still a pretty good story, even if you're not sure who - or what - some of the characters are.

So, I know Rag has a seperate thread on the purchase of Lucasfilm by Disney; however I was just reading that they want to make another at least three films from the original penciled story by Lucas. It won't fly with true SW fans because Harison is Han and Hamill is Luke, Carrie Fisher couldn't thinher fat arse down enough to even come close to playing Leia now. Then I here they want to do spin offs on individual characters like they did for Xmen and Avengers. This will be demise of the SW universe for us Og. Tilogy die hard fans.

Ragnarok
11-02-2012, 03:27 PM
Well, I know that for Dune die-hards, what Frank Herbert's son and some other collaborator took over the series, and what they did to it with their new books, some claim was a capitol crime punishable by death.

All I can say about Star Wars is that no matter what they do it will probably upset people. From a rational point of view it doesn't bother me too much, but from a more visceral one I can sympathize. Even if successive films are VASTLY better than the most recent SW films, there's no way to make it feel the same because the actors have aged beyond what the storyline would require. And even if they were able to accommodate the original actors' real ages, I guarantee not one would want to participate (Ford and Fischer in particular - Hamill might). The Tron Legacy/Benjamin Button "age regression algorithm" won't be able to fix this either. Even John Williams wouldn't return. He's of an age where he might not even be alive by the time Ep7 hit (he'd be in his mid 80s by then).

Spoon37
11-03-2012, 10:38 AM
I've no issues with different actors being used, in many respects it would be better to get younger actors in who can play the parts instead of for example terminator 3 vs teminator 1/2 Arnie is a shadow of his former self in 3...

There are some exceptions however - No more Frank Oz makes Yoda fail for example :( Not that this is much of an issue for Ep7, unless he's in as a force ghost.

The spin offs make me sad - they always do when an IP gets milked for all it's worth. Just imagine the 'Jar Jar binks cartoon series' or similar *shudders*.

But yeah I think Rag is right, it will annoy some no matter what they make - at the very least not following the extensive extended universe story will cause a rift with whats been accepted for years as "what happens next" versus the films they may make.

Hey Joker, unfortunately in the great USA any natural disaster is compounded by the disgusting human race that resides in this country. As soon as the disaster is gone, the rich and poor are separated because the rich feel they should be saved first and the better neighboor hoods get helped first. Our govt, IMO, looks at these natural disasters as population control, and since the poor don't contribute tax dollars they get helped last. Add to that struggle the fact the police and emergency personel are all tied in efforts of recovering from the disaster leaving an open invitation for the poor or just ill hearted folks to go and rob from their fellow man in their time of need. It is really disgusting to see how heartless and greedy a good majority of Americans are (rich and poor).

I haven't driven one, but I tried a mini countryman out a few weeks back and it was nice to drive, big chunky thing, much better on fuel but like I said, if I hold out a little bit longer I can possibly get a 3 coupe so it'll be worth it. Well, for my two daughters they want some beds for their dolls, so i'll be building those for sure. My son wants a garage type of thing with a track for his matchbox size cars, so I'm going to build the frame and buy some track to fix it up. I'd like to make it like 4' tall and the track go around in a spiral to the ground!

Sorry to hear 'bout the cold Mate~!

Ah various things! I thought you was talking about something R/C.

My nephew has one of them type things, you put the car in the bottom and a lift takes it to the top, then it goes down a spiral ramp to the bottom. Hot Wheels I think it is/was....most likely broken by now.

The Stray Cat
11-12-2012, 12:34 PM
Yep they make them but they are made pretty crappy and only last for about a week before a part goes missing. We'll see how this goes, still in the planning stage on that, but I have designs made for the beds for the girls' dolls so I'll hit that this weekend.

Sounds good Ed!.

An yeah his tower thing was flimsy plastic, as the car goes down the spiral the whole thing wobbles lol. He had a scaletrix once, was one that you didn't have to have a complete circuit for it to work. He had a long straight then a 90 degree bend at the end. Cars were hitting the ceiling an all sorts, death trap!.

Toys for kids now range from heh--to--WTF!

Ooh, Spoon...what did you think of MIB 3?.

Watched it Saturday evening with my father(who is a big sci-fi & MIB fan I should add) - I found it passable but not great, I think it must have been filmed with 3D in mind because watching it in 2D seemed to lack something(simplified scenes to exagerrate depth for example). I did like Grif and the ending though ^_^ Worst of it was I think my father was sorely dissappointed by it, having somewhat built up his hopes for a really great movie :dunno: :banghead:

Anyhoo - Yeah Joker the effects were good in MIB 3, but some scenes had that kinda fake CGI look, there was one where they were just driving a car along a lit street at night quite early in the movie, it looked like the car and the whole street had been rendered sloppily so it didn't look real IMO(like the car could be floating, the street was a bit too perfect etc). I know some effects weren't meant to look 'real' and thats fine of course but just a few scenes seemed poor even on aesthetics. I mainly mean this in comparison to MIB 1 & 2 - everything there generally looked realistic or at least plausibly in the same scene as the other elements where CGI was relied on.

The fish was cool though :lolbeat:

Ah well... feels good to swing the ban hammer once more :firedevil:

meanwhile - had some fun last night, I think I mentioned I donated to the Carmageddon re-incarnated kickstarter project, well one of the perks of doing so was a free download of the original carmageddon + splat pack from gog.com which uses DosBox as an emulator to run on win 7, but I hadn't got round to downloading it yet. I did last night... so I was running people over and crashing into my opponents with reckless abandon for a couple of hours.

Good fun, but sadly seems to be running low rez(320x240pix or so?) not the high rez mod/textures pack which is ok but it makes it pretty hard to see if that distant pixelated object is a park bench or an opponent about to ram you... <_< Not sure if I can fix that with this version though as the dosbox thingy seems to set the screen resolution to suit before running the game.

The single thing that I dislike about it is the low 3.5" HD capacity (only four if you include the exterior, hot-swap bays). It's geared more for SSDs, which are awesome for high speed write/read, but the cost per gigabyte is still too high for me. Hopefully the price drop trend will continue, because I'd much rather have something without moving parts to fail.

It'll take up more desk surface than my current rig, but the HAF XB isn't the skyscraper that my Armor + is. Plus it utilizes its interior space VASTLY better (which I could say about 75% of all cases available now).

Spoon37
11-22-2012, 03:53 AM
Well for alot of folk the sensible thing to do is use SSD's for the operating system and then conventional 3.5" HDD for storage of files/music/video etc due to the price/performance differences, certainly it sucks with my NZXT Zero where you have to use flimsy adapters from ludicrously priced SSD's to adapt them to fit... :banghead:

Case looks cool though

As for M$.... yeah sewage powered? lol! :lolbeat: I'm not too suprised by windows 8's killswitches, but then I refuse to use a 'mobile' OS for a desktop PC unless its basically there are no other kinds of OS to use... I personally think Microsoft have a problem though, because win 7 is presently their best solution for desktop PC's by far - its replacement(Win 8) basically isnt a replacement for it in any way shape or form.

I don't know, I think there are still better suited actors for the job. They will probably completely ruin the HKF by making it overly goofy and of they will add their underlying adult themes because Hollywood believes that makes it more enjoyable for all ages.

Hey Spoon don't buy in!!:smackbutt: It still is "marketing bull crap" Caffeine in any dose is a stimulant which means you can recruit more motor units in your muscles, there bye contracting them with more force. - That's all nothing special other than the addictive nature of the stuff. I agree that everybody must take responsibility for their own actions. But how many people, do you feel, that are licensed to drive should be?... People fall short of the mark all the time, it's human nature. It's predictable in the numbers and large companies have those numbers; how many minors, percentage of people who are at a health risk etc.. They don't have to have the health warnings that they should. Energy drinks fall into loosely regulated health supplement segment. People who realize how detrimental those ingredients are if taken daily/ regularly know better... Ask any nutritionist or doctor they will tell you about the related health risks. Ask any layman and they will say it taste great
! feel better etc. Who's the bad driver now? I would go so far as to say the company knows their product caused the death of the child. At 10 billion a year industry, as the article stated, that is a lot of high calorie snake oil being consumed. Pedaling that much caffeine and ephedra etc. it is bound to happen. Which does not mean that they are at fault for that. That's just the law of averages working itself out, many more people don't die obviously. The stinky part is the mega marketing machine that gets people hooked on that crap with out proper MEDICAL warnings. They are just using plausible denial as it would not be good marketing strategy to say oops...sorry! In truth its like baby sitting a hundred children at a big time climbing gym, when one inevitably falls you could always say "I didn't tell them to climb that wall!?"....Sorry for the rant I'm not a energy drink fan as you can tell  ...Mark

Okay, I couldn't wait until Thurs evening. As per Joker's request, I'll avoid spoilers. (I'm glad you said something, J - I wasn't going to drop anything huge, but there were a couple of things I thought I might bring up).

I'm not going to even summarize the basic premise beyond this: it's eight years after the previous film, Harvey Dent has been unrightfully deified by Gotham's law enforcement, Bruce Wayne is a crippled shut-in, and the League of Shadows is back.

A few comments:
Instead of a Like/Didn't Like kind of review, I'll just make a few observations.

This is a dark and an existentially terrifying movie. Much darker than the previous two. Bane's motivations make him in his own right more threatening than the Joker did. The Joker was a just-let-it-burn-for-his-own-perverse-enjoyment kind of anarchist; a guy who you think might have an agenda - plans within plans - but everything still leads to a huge question mark. The "I'm just a dog chasing cars" analogy from the second film is exactly what he was. That in its own right is scary. However, Bane is very clear about his motives and what he hopes to accomplish. I'd say more, but I won't.

Also, I was not one of those who had a problem with Bane's voice.

After watching a bit of her performance, I found myself having a difficult time with the casting of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle (she's never once called Catwoman, thankfully) or liking the character, but be patient: her character is given a bit of room to do some reflection and development and I think Hathaway does just fine. She's a sleight-of-hand trickster most of the time who seems to find a great deal of satisfaction in bragging how adaptable and elusive she can be, but her ultimate aims betray that demeanor as a front to someone trying to escape what she has become. In the end she becomes someone far more empathetic.

The music is also the best of the three Nolan Batman films. Hans Zimmer is flying solo in this one (he had been teaming with James Newton Howard, but JNH didn't want to return for some reason and was doing Snow White and the Huntsman) and it really makes the whole world of the Dark Knight complete. I've owned the soundtrack since the movie came out, and finally seeing it in the context of the film gives this work an even deeper impact. There's a heavy electronic bend to it. The couple of queues in 5/4 meter are really blood-pumping, nerve-wracking.

True to form, Christopher Nolan has a few twists in this movie. I won't say what they are, but one I saw coming a long time in, BUT what I didn't see is how far that twist went which still lent itself to a "whoa" moment.

One of the prevailing themes that I got out of it is the ugly reality of unintended consequences, and just how bad it can backfire.

Content:
Sex - There's a "coital aftermath" scene between Bruce and Miranda (Marion Cotillard's character) that I didn't think lent to anything in the story. Maybe it did, but it wasn't important to me.
Violence - There's no gore to speak of (plenty of people get shot), but this is very brutal, not only from a mano e mano (Batman sustains a beatdown that made me seriously cringe), but from the way Gotham as a society is eviscerated and ripped limb from limb while the rest of the world watches in horror. This ain't for kids, guys. This is a very, very hard PG-13.
Vulgarity/Profanity - Jesus' name is taken in vain a couple of times. Also "Son of a…" en toto is actually used at an appropriate point. A subtle wang joke is also made.

Summary
In my The Avengers review, I said that the Marvel films and Nolan's Batman shouldn't be compared because they're technically different genres. Here's the thing - at the risk of being a hypocrite, I think one really can just based just comparing them as movies. The Dark Knight Rises outclasses Whedon's supergroup film start to finish. Maybe I just prefer Nolan's storytelling style, or maybe I just prefer the world of the Dark Knight, but this movie is going to stick with me far more than The Avengers will. The Avengers is at its core just an alien invasion film - it's Transformers without the robots. Yes, it's clever, well written, and for the most part well acted, but it's just Saturday Morning Cartoons with more cursing and fewer commercials. TDKR, especially when watched with the consideration of it as just a third part of a three act arc, is different animal altogether. _expand later_ Furthermore, no belief has to be suspended. There are no "aw come on - that could never happen" moments.

I have a limited amount of time to finish this before work, so I reserve the right to come back and add/revise some of this commentary, and expand on some of my points, particularly the ones that are incomplete.

Risking my credibility, I'm giving this six bacons out of five. It's not a perfect film, and not everyone is going to like it, but it blew me away. THIS was the superhero movie of 2012.

I hope I didn't oversell it, because it's not perfect. But this one really spoke to me. I may watch it again tonight. Most Nolan films require a couple more viewings because this one has his typical shorthand that sometimes lends to some confusion or disjointedness.

I watched the first twenty minutes of Exp2, but I was too tired to deal with all of the yelling and headshots and explosions and grunting and armpit hair.

Hey, don't apologize for disagreeing with me. :nice: It's entirely a matter of taste. I know not everyone liked it. I saw the dark knight a week ago, and I liked it, the only thing I didn't like was Bane's voice.
He sounded like a snooty londoner speaking through a tube, making random observations in some of the dialogue. It's like he intentionally left out "I spy with my little eye" before he spoke in the conversations he had.

Very short Expendables 2 review…

This one takes place in Albania where Stallone's crew, under penalty of prison because he shafted Mr. Church in the last job, is saddled with the job of retrieving a MacGuffin from a downed Chinese airplane. It's of great importance and it can't fall into The Wrong Hands. Of course we wouldn't have much of a movie if it didn't, so that's just what happens. The Wrong Hands is played by Jean-Claude Van Damme. Other new guys are Liam Hemsworth (a sniper), Nan Yu (the extractor Church forces Stallone to take on the job), and Chuck Norris. Everyone else from the previous film is in here with the exception of Mickey Roarke (who I thought lent the one empathetic and defining performance in the first film with his soliloquy on what they saw in Yugoslavia, thereby making Exp1 something more than just an obnoxious bullet-hell actioner). Also anyone who is a Jet Li fan will be let down because he's only in the first ten minutes of the movie. (He does a badass Samwise Gamgee kitchen-utensil beatdown on a bunch of guys, though.) To compensate, Arnold and Bruce get a lot of screentime - these aren't just cameos anymore.

Probably what bothered me the most about this one was that it made fun of itself too much. Once Sly, Arnold, Bruce and Chuck are all on screen at the same time, there are more inside-jokes at one another than bullets flying. That in and of itself is not the problem - those jokes were all funny - but it undermines the serious, "somebody's gonna pay" nature of the movie, as well as the big climactic fight between Stallone and Van Damme. I halfway expected Bob Hope, King of the Inside Joke, to show up at some point. By the end they all but admit they're just a bunch of 60-year-old 7th graders playing G.I. Joe. A movie like this needs levity, but holy crap, there's a point where too much is too much. It's also very short - just barely 100 minutes long, and it felt more like a two-act film, so that 100 minutes felt incomplete.

It's a fun, loud, violent movie, but I can't seem to like it, and I really wanted to. To be clear, I didn't hate the movie. I just felt it didn't live up to what it could have been.

Content:
Sex - None, but Statham's character's girlfriend is almost enough to make the movie Rated-R by herself.
Violence/Gore - Not as severe as the first (no one getting barbecued, no waterboarding), but there's still plenty of bloody kills, including someone tangling with the tail rotor on a helicopter.
Language/Vulgarity - Really tame, and the rumor was that Chuck Norris was the one ultimately responsible. The most severe word used is "sh…," which is probably used about a dozen times. Dolph's character has something of a lecherous comment toward the only girl on the team.

Summary:
I give it two-and-a-half Bacons out of five. I was a little let down. The first one was hardly perfect, and I don't mind it when movies of this kind don't take themselves too seriously, but in this case it undercut the story so much that I couldn't enjoy it. I will say that it's a definite rental or one to get when it drops in price.

I just fired up FireFox and no issues. Problem there is there's no activity window/monitor to find the streaming file to download it. (My internet is so slow that DLing is the only way I can watch video - streaming is an exercise in futility.) The issue is clearly with Safari. My security functions are like they always are, so no problems there.

I just hit Apple's support page and there is a final update to Safari for my version of OS X. I'm running Safari 5.0.5, and the most recent for OS X 10.6 is 5.1.7, so I may give that a go after work. If no change after the update, then I dunno.

I'm not super experienced in it, but in spite of being the guy my family comes to with computer problems (which isn't that often, but it happens) and me complaining about it, in the end it's kind of fun. The HDD fix was quite easy - remove it from their junker PC, stick it in my spare PC(bolted together from spares that is) as a slave drive and it works just fine. it wouldnt boot up as a master though. so I ran chkdsk, scandisk etc on it to fix errors such as for example a bad sector - which is what I suspect the problem was.

I plugged it in as a master drive in my pc, it boots fine.

However the saga continued when I tried to return it... still gave "disk 0 read error", I've at this point tried a variety of BIOS options, every SATA port they have, new cables, a known working master HDD out of my spares PC etc, and it always says the same thing. So as far as I can tell the HDD was fixed...but the PC I put it back into has a fried SATA bus or similar motherboard issue :banghead:

To be fair its a 9 year old PC and they werent too perturbed by the idea it may be dead, so It'll get sorted - main thing was saving all their files which I now have 2 backups of(and technically the fixed HDD has them on too).

Ah well - sorry to hear about your stomach ulcer/galbladder probs Rag, hopefully you can get that sorted before it does too much harm :nice:

Have fun at your Christmas party FH :chug: I'm going to a mates 28th birthday party...right about...now actually :nice:

Vid's not working for me. :( EDIT: I just saw the video title, and I'm pretty sure I've watched it before on our local PBS station. They air it at least five or six times during their pledge drive in the spring. :nice:

Okay, I thought it was pretty interesting :nice:

I had a great time, I hope you too had one :beer&buddy:

Quite a strong presence of northern lights tonight by the way.
I had to stay outside for a few minutes extra finishing off my last beer while I gandered a bit at the orchestral lights in the sky

It most certainly is very interesting. I hope I didn't sound like I was discounting it. I'm just trying to console myself for not being able to watch the YT posting. The only thing more ambitious done in this state is the Trans-AK pipeline. If you can find the documentary on that - whoa - it's insane what they went through to get that working.

Ah yes the joys of Youtube not working in your country/state/province... I especially like it when it hints that my country(unlike any other) is such a backwards non entity... :lolbeat:

...and yes regarding parties: a good time was had by all afaik - I did need a bit of a lie-in this morning though :lolbeat:

Also having a few WTF moments regarding post: I ordered some weight discs (cast iron 5kg x4) on friday, they got delivered this morning despite there normally being no postal delivery and oddly the "York Fitness" branded (its actually molded in raised letters in the cast iron) weights say clearly on the box "made in Canada" which is not something I've seen before, including on any of the previous York fitness products I purchased. Also... picking up 20kg(44lbs) off your doorstep is no joke

My case is entirely browser-related issues (MP4-based vids won't load and give errors, FLV-based vids are a-okay). I'm going to attempt the Safari update while I try to catch up on my sleep. Regarding your point, yeah, region-locked vids are insipid.

In other news, I just made my one and only Christmas order for this year from Amazon. Anyone that I missed or couldn't think of anything to get them will be getting a $15 to $20 gift card locally (about three people). Thankfully about $60 of it isn't coming directly out of my own pocket (at the moment it is, but I'm being reimbursed), but it still really hurts (this has been a horrible year for us, financially-speaking). About $48 for shipping, but that's the only way to guarantee I'll get it by or before next Monday. I'm getting myself a book entitled "Guitar Lessons" by Taylor Guitars founder Bob Taylor. I got it for my oldest brother a couple of years ago and he says it's an awesome book as it relates to business philosophy.

I updated Safari, installed the latest version of Flash, added the YouTube5 extension…and now it's worse than ever. NO YouTube vids work. Period. I'm done with Safari. I'm attempting to get my FireFox updated and running the correct plugs. I'm going to run FF indefinitely until/if I can get Safari working. It may require a reinstall of the program, which is nothing serious, but if there's a .plist file that's corrupted or something, then it's not even worth it. :nono:

Fat lady ain't singing tonight. I "reset" Safari. Troubles over. YouTube works. Downloading even easier with the YouTube5 extension. I can't get comfortable with FireFox. I know I could if that's all I used for a few days, then it's no problem. Good thing is I learned that compatibility issues can often be fixed via the RESET function, and I got my copy of FF updated and working as it should. :)

Yay! :woohoo: congrats Rag ^_^

Meanwhile I have just been solving another tech problem - this time my fathers iPad mini, he wants photo's on it taken on something other than the ipad, he has them on his PC, the ipad appears as a DCIM folder as if it were a camera memory card, yet you cant simply drag and drop files on and expect it to work(as he does, because his kindle Fire does this no problems).

At least in this case its a simple fix(thanks to 2 seconds searching on google) - open itunes, click "ipad" at the top, click photo's, tick "sync photo's from" and then hit the dropdown box to select "choose folder" and then click 'apply' and it's presently sitting beside me "syncing"... which seems to mean it very very slowly uploading 153 small jpegs.

The upside is I can see whats been uploaded already and scroll through them to see how they are(it displays them quite well!) - the ipad itself is very intuitive to use, if only uploading things were so obvious

**edit** its finished, but it says it cannot upload 'peggy sue got married' unknown error #54. :lolbeat: I think that means the photos ARE uploaded but who knows...

Oop. New wrinkle. It seems to still not display all vids. Gonna post one below so it's embedded and see if it works that way. So far I can't find the common connection as I've been able to access both MP4 and FLV vids, but there are some that just will not work.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8V3zBFiMaVY

EDIT: Okay, the video does display and play AND download when embedded, but I can't see anything - just a white space - when I'm on the actual YT page. I may still be using FireFox in Tag Team mode with Safari if it's something important (like the above video).

Spoon, what little I've experienced of it, the whole iOS thing - syncing is definitely a little counterintuitive and kludgy. I have no idea if that's been improved with iTunes 11 or not.

It's almost -20°F outside. Vehicle won't start. We have a charger on the battery right now. We needed to be at work this morning before 7:00AM, and it's now about 20 minutes to 8. Might be a tough day.

So I have a review to give but I need to organize my thoughts. I just saw the Hobbit and I can say that I was thrilled with it. Absolutely awesome! If you enjoyed the LOTR movies this will be awesome to you as well. The story does have non-book added material, alot of the extra stuf is from Tolkien's other notes and that, which didn't make it into any book. There is also alot of nice hints to future goings on. Over all I'd give it 4.5 bacons plus a Banana out of five bacons. The only thing I can really say negative about the movie is they made Thorin's demeanor to brooding and angry. I have a better review tomorrow after I've slept on it and thought more about it.

Cool. This is one I'd like to but won't be able to see in the theater. As per usual, gotta wait until home video release. Knowing PJ there'll be two versions, and knowing myself I'll end up with both. I'll probably just get the DVD version for the Theatrical Edition and get the BD version of the Extended Ultra Maxi Super Extreme Edition when it comes out just before The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theaters. :nice:

Sounds good Ed - I'm in two minds about it, mainly the splitting up the story into 3 movies obviously doesnt sit well with me and has even the least cynical people wondering if its more about money than narrative...

Good luck with the truck starting Rag! I dont live in a super cold climate but I know batteries discharge much faster in very cold weather...

Weather locally has gone weird... we had some freezing cold weather, ice, frost, etc basically just stopping short of actually snowing, then it warmed up, rained alot, went foggy for a couple of days, cleared up and now seems to be a bit foggy again. This is why people in the UK don't usually come up with Christmas songs: "I'm dreaming of a... Foggy Christmas, with a bit of rain...." :lolbeat:

Oh the iOS/iPad thing - it actually didn't upload every photo because it was trying to sync too much music, was apparently 271mb over capacity mainly from music which is why that error came up even if it didnt seem coherent. It's sorted now and Dad is a happy bunny...so to speak...

Spoon, I was a little hesitant myself being a big Tolkien fan. I'm sure a lot of it is monitarily driven, however the extra stuff added to these stories is actually kind of nice because unless you are familiar with stories outside of The Hobbit and LOTR you won't know all of the little outside characters and plots. Plus they intertwine some hints to the LOTR movies here and there.

By the way, Joker, you might talk to Spain. They wiped out 80% to 90% of the Mayan population when they brought their own little apocalypse to the New World. So, with their hostile takeover of the Maya's stock, one should consider the Mayan debt had been assumed by the Spanish government. :nice:

Hey Rag, one ting I wanted to tell ya about the Hobbit, the wolves and wargs actually look very wolf like not like the cat/hyena mix in LOTR.

Ragnarok
12-21-2012, 08:59 PM
Yeah, I saw that in the trailers. I remember WAY early on when GDT was still directing that he made a serious point about the Wargs being big scary wolves and not the grizzly hyenas of LotR. I find it interesting that PJ seemed to go through with the RetCon. I gotta say, though, that if I have to see one killed, I'd rather see a hyena monster kiss an axe than something that looks like a bigger version of my dog.

Did you see it in 3D/HFR or in standard 2D 24fps?

I've figured out what I want for Christmas this year. The day to spend with family. I won't be getting it this year. Have to work all day on the Sabbath (the fifth time for this damnable *** of a kitchen), all day Christmas Eve, and all day Christmas day, so that some ****ing dickbucket who has backed us into a corner can get his ****ing doors for his ****ing kitchen on the 26th that we're getting paid about 60% of its actual worth. What's really enraging is that I have to **** off the one day of the year I look forward to beyond all others probably to find out the guy who's installing all this bullshit won't be in until the following week.

I hate this job, I hate this occupation, and I hate what it's doing to me emotionally, physically and financially. For the sake of my sanity and my mortality I have to get as far away from this as I possibly can. And, of course, I can't. I'm chained down to it and I can't escape it until it goes down in ruin, and when that happens, I won't have the resources or the time to change direction. When it does implode, it will not be freedom - it will be abandonment and exile. This is the worst Christmas I've ever had.

Please forgive me for venting just a little. :(
