I started another Scorcher based build. This one will have a scale chassis made of aluminum. I think I am going to stay more in keeping with the original Baja/Scorcher idea on this one but build more of a scale cage, shocks, etc. First things first.
First thing was to get scale layout drawn up of a VW pan. This is a layout drawing of an actual chassis that I re-sized to fit under a Scorcher shell. |

Then I made a cardboard template to check size and fit on the actual suspension and body. I am working with a buddy of mine who has a home brew CNC. The parts will need some tweaking after they are milled for components but they will be a direct bolt-on for the Scorcher suspension. Here are some file images. More to follow-

I always figured RC4WD or someone along those lines would come out with a scale VW pan for the Sand Scorcher front and rear's to bolt up too. I would love to purchase one if they come up! Beautiful...

Ha-Who knows-I need to see how this one comes together. I figured I'd build something first.
Thanks! I know, it seems that this would have been done sooner-maybe the fact that the SS has been reissued helps-there are more new kits out there and they are not as sacred as the vintage version to experiment with... |

cool floorpan - I wouldnt rush into full time production though, based on what I've seen in the past if you get 10 folk say "yes please" price it at a production run of 10-20 and say "ok the price is X, pay up people" you'll get 1-2 guys who actually buy it.
Not trying to put a downer on the idea or anything just a trend I have noticed - this is why Chris at Rogue Element Components takes cash orders first then makes CNC runs... ![]() |

you VW master, I'm very interested at this build
![]() and then, if you can machine some more alum... ![]() why don't you try to build a more realistic rear suspension? like a semitrailing as the 1:1 Beetle has, instead of the strange type of tamiya's SRB ![]() |

Ha-thanks for the kind words! I did build a similar trailing arm set up for my VW pickup build. It's funny because the front suspension is so close to the real VW's, although a little large for the scale. I might build more scale rear end for this one but i am taking one thing at a time for now..

First fitting-I will need to do some sanding and media blasting to eliminate the machine marks but not a bad fit so far-the body snaps onto the lip that extends out along the heater channel. The heater channel forms a wall for the inside of the body to rest against.
