Default Project - Desert Devil

My Beetle body showed up today so I decided to officially kick off my Sand Scorcher project today. It'll be a few days before I do more work on it.

Here is the Sand Scorcher as I bought it off ebay;

And here it is now;

Ya, I haven't really done anything except remove the electronics. The plans are to make this a very scale looking desert racing baja bug that I can drive and enjoy as well.

I'll be making an aluminum "tub" for the electronics.

I bought another coil over spring kit and am gonna try it on the rear shocks to see if I can get rid of the stock wire spring. Ya, I know it will require modifying the shock mounts to space them apart a little. I may need to get or make, ( have a lathe) yet another coil over conversion since the rear is so heavy it will probably need four springs to the front's two.

It will get a near full racing style interior complete with a "roll cage". I will probably lose that tinted window and put some goggles on my driver figure. :)

I'll be making a custom front bumper as well and may modify the rear cage, not sure on that yet. I'll probably end up making a set of nerf bars as well.

It will also have a full set of operation LED lights. I need to do something about those wheel inserts. It appears they used to be anodized blue but the anodizing is now very faded. I'll remove the rest of the anodizing then maybe try polishing them. They appear to be aluminum, a magnet won't stick to them anyways. I also need to got hold of some new tires for it. I can't beleive how hard it is to get Grasshopper tires right now!

So, please, give me your thoughts and advice on my plan.

David

I haven't actually cleaned anything up. All I've done so far is remove the electronics. The body is going to get de-stickerized and will have one of my favorite off-road paint racing schemes that I've used on a couple Mini-Z's.

This project has hardly even started.

Yes, his and Mr B's are what motivated me to buy a Sand Scorcher and get a Beetle body. Though for a while it didn't look like I was gonna go for a Beetle body since they were so hard to find for a decent price, but this one came up with an okay price and I couldn't pass it up.

Stu's one was a Evader BX at one point, then Stu modded it to the nth degree with a custom chassis, shorter arms, shorter driveshafts, ect. it wasn't a SS, but it looks cool as hell anyway :) I really like MrB's one, and shodog's many sand scorchers and rough riders :) there purdy :drool:

My dilemna is I have too many projects now! I'm afraid Desert Devil in on hold for a while. I gotta finish the makeover on Rockeater first since I've decided I'm probably gonna make the trek south at the beginning of March for a comp. It'll probably take me another month to finish that.

I'm with ya on that, I just looked through shodog's showroom om tamiyaclub and I already like the Kyosho Ultima 1/20 buggies, they look to be a good project for a semi-scale stadium truck (only semi scale because of the indipendent suspension all around) and I like mini-me cars :lol: that's prolly why I have two minis right now (one is a MLST, which is a LST mini-me) :lol:

Davkin, that will definitely be an ambitious project. But it will look cool in the end. If you’re going for a cooler looks I would look into using either hornet or TLT dampers for the rear. Their long size gives a cool scale look.

My welder and I have been messing around making a full cage buggy that the stock front and rear suspensions would bolt right to and still allow you to fit a scorcher body over.

This site is a killer one to get your creative juices flowing

That's what I was originally considering doing when it was going to be a desert racer rather than a baja beetle, maybe I'll do it that way some day anyways, I've got my hands full doing a cage for Rockeater right now.

Ya, I've seen that one, very cool stuff there.
