Question Help me pick D90 kit

Had no idea this niche of the hobby existed until a couple events were scheduled at Uwharrie, NC: https://www.facebook.com/events/1061433967319023/ I drive my 4Runner on the trails at uwharrie whenever I can.

I built and raced an electric Taymia kit back in 1994... also built a few model tanks when I was a kid. Hoping to take my passion for off-roading to reignite some rusty (and largely underdeveloped) R/C and modeling skills.

I've always wanted a D90. Very fitting my first model would be a Defender. Here are a couple of kits I am attracted too:

2013 Mex-I D-90 version FULL-PRO

2016 Mex - D-90 MEX Expedition II NEW

My limited research has me thinking RCMODELex > Gelande. How much of what's included in these kits will I want up wanting to replace from the jump? Are the radios included nice? Prices seem to have come down in the last 20+ years on the electronics. How about the motors?

Thoughts on these kits? Any other I should consider?

Do you want a kit or an RTR (ready-to-run)?The Gelande 2 RTR that you linked comes pre-built and painted with all the electronics, but there is a kit version if you want to do it all yourself. Rcmodelex doesn't make RTRs and their kits don't come with electronics.

Rcmodelex builds a one-piece chassis with integrated bumpers and sliders, then adds parts from other manufacturers (body, transmission, axles, etc.). The 2013 Rcmodelex kit uses the body, axles, and shocks from the RC4WD Gelande 2. So the only thing you really get that's unique to that kit is the frame.

The Gelande 2 chassis is made of parts that bolt together, and the bumpers are NOT integrated, meaning they can be swapped out easily. The Rcmodelex chassis is *technically* stronger, but in practice it doesn't really matter. I personally like the transmission in the Gelande 2 better, the HPI gearbox in the Rcmodelex kits are quite loud and don't have interchangeable spur gears, so you can't change the ratios easily. As I mentioned, the axles/shocks/body is the same between the two, so personally I would go with a Gelande 2 because it gives you more options.

If you get the RTR Gelande 2, the electronics will be plenty good. As the description says, you'll need to assemble the body parts (as shown in one of the pictures), and you need to get a NiMH battery with XT60 connector.

From my personal experince: I have an RC4WD Trailfinder 2 with the same transmission, transfer case, and axles as the Gelande 2, as well as the same servo and motor that come in the RTR. The servo is very good (just don't accidentally dunk it a swamp like I did ) and the motor is a good match for the gearing. I also built a Gelande 2 kit when they were first released, and the chassis is very solid and well-designed. The shocks have a bit of slop in them, but in motion the suspension works very well. It 'lumbers' around like a real D90.

Thanks for the great reply. Looks like this kit is my best bet http://store.rc4wd.com/Gelande-II-Tr...et_p_3248.html
