I got my final assignment in. It was so long that I had to include an apology at the end. 6,300 words and 12 pages, single-spaced.

Tomorrow I get to see a dentist and have him tell me I have some horrible gum disease and I'll get to have my teeth, tongue, and for no apparent reason, my eyebrows extracted. Happy day.

Oh man is this ever funny…

NO ONE has commented on my assignment.

I had an idea that I wanted to try, but it got so big and convoluted that it wouldn't stop growing. The thing is I had to give the thing an ending. When I got to the point where I realized that it was going out of control, I felt I had two options: see it through to the end or do something like this:

Okay, so, there was, like, this guy…at a place. Annnd, then some stuff happens. I think. Uh, yeah.

The end.

Instead I slogged through it and gave the instructor something along the lines of Waterworld: a massive, trainwreck of a drama in pseudo-screenplay format.

Can I read it? I'll give you some feedback. Waterworld meets Avatar???

I meant Waterworld in a figurative sense. WW was a titanic disaster: overbudget, misguided and confounded direction and editing. It's just kinda how I felt writing this stupid thing. It took forever, I felt directionless more than once, and the instructor n' classmates are probably going to be bored stupid before they hit the halfway mark.

I knew what ya meant by the WW reference, that movie was trailered as this epic, Mad Max on water type of movie and it turned into a movie about racism, pedophilia, and anti-smoking. What the hell!

Yeeeeeaaaaah…that's definitely not the angle I took. The protagonist in my assignment was something akin to the old stories of Herakles (alt. Hercules). Kinda. Sorta.

Here's how my apology was worded:
Quote:
Folks, I really don't know what to say for myself. I'm very sorry. I had an idea that I wanted to try, and ended up digging a huge hole for myself. I got so mired into it that I couldn't change gears and do a simpler drama or an essay. As a result it ended up a day late and almost 6,300 words long. It's a train wreck.

Is this pretentious? You bet. Is it hard to follow and contrived? Absolutely. Is it ridiculously long and probably not worth the time to read it? I guarantee it. Are there potential plot holes and other elements left unexplained that would have made it more comprehensible? Is there water at the bottom of the ocean?

But here it is. For better or worse.

EDIT: The climax is also a bit violent. It's not super graphic, but it would probably be a really hard PG-13.
Just got my first comment, and it's from the instructor:
Quote:
No apology needed, you obviosly took the assignment very seriously and also let your creativity flow completely. I enjoyed it!
Well, that wasn't too bad.

Well, here's my end-of-term checklist:

Final assignment turned in? Check.
Three + comments on other student's assignment? Check.
Passed final test? Check. (Aced it, actually.)
Realize that I'm only 199 posts away from 10,000? Check and check.

congratulations Rag, sound like you are all set for Christmas, how did the dentift go btw?

as for the film references... I quite enjoyed WaterWorld...it was at the very least different.

I also watched Die Hard 4.0 today with my Dad...quite enjoyable considering all its silly stunt spectacular effects and techno babble (that doesn't sit right for anyone who knows anything in-depth about computers but sounds plausible for the woefully ignorant). I still think the earlier films were better but what the heck, I enjoyed it.

  • Ready for Christmas? Academically, yes. Shopping-wise, no. My last little payday went to the tooth fairy.
  • Dentist visit was…different. It was my first time to a dentist, ever. (I've never needed to go to one.) Long story short, I have a bacterial infection in a couple of my molars. It's attacking my teeth at the root. Solution: deep cleaning. Full eval 2nd week of Jan, first round end of Jan, final round ???. I'll schedule that after my first round. I need to make sure I'll have money.

About it.
