Boy, 3, climbs inside toy vending machine

A three-year-old boy has been freed from inside a toy vending machine at a Central Coast shopping centre after climbing up the prize chute to get to the toys.

Callum Sammut waited until his mother wasn’t looking before crawling up the chute at Lake Haven yesterday morning to the amazement of shoppers and the youngster's mother, Tracey.

"I called out 'Callum, where are you' and he said 'I'm here mum'...and he popped his head out [of the chute]'' a bemused Tracey Sammut told Sky News.

Police, ambulance paramedics and Volunteer Rescue Association teams were called to Lake Haven Shopping Centre about 11am to free him from the machine.

"How much air was in there, that was the first question I asked," Ms Sammut said.

"He's definitely got a bit of contortionist in him."

Witness Angie Saladine said she couldn't believe her eyes.

‘‘You know when you do a double take, when you don’t think you’re seeing what you’re seeing?’’ she said.

‘‘It was like that.’’

Rescue workers removed the vending machine’s door within 10 minutes to free Callum, who spent close to an hour inside.

Ms Saladine said Callum did not seem stressed by the situation

‘‘He was really excited he got hold of the toys,’’ she said.

‘‘The security staff looked a bit baffled.’’

The boy was not hurt during his ordeal.

Fire crews from the City of Greenwood Fire Department rescued a three-year-old boy late Wednesday afternoon after he crawled inside a toy machine at the Greenwood Big Lots. Once the boy crawled inside the machine he was unable to get out on his own.

According to reports from the Greenwood City Police Department crews responded to Big Lots at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday. Big Lots employees called 911 after staff at the store attempted to cut a padlock off the door of the machine but were unsuccessful.

“Three (Big Lots employees) tried using our bolt cutters to cut the lock off but they were not strong enough so I had to call the fire department,” said Big Lots employee Meagan Fallaw.

While waiting on fire crews to arrive, Fallaw said she sent a bottled Pepsi and some tissue to the boy through the toy chute to try and calm him down. The boy was not injured, only scared and crying after he realized he could not exit the machine the same way he entered.

Big Lots employees say the boy’s parents were found near the back of the store. A bystander said she believed the boy’s young sister coaxed him to climb inside the machine to get toys for the two of them.

The Greenwood City Fire Department was able to cut the pad lock off of the machine’s door to rescue the boy.

this same scenario comes up every so often. the real issue is what the hell were his parents doing while he was climbing inside? someone needs to slap the 'rents upside the head for being ignorant. no wonder the kid is stupid, his parents are idiots.

I would say that you likely aren't a parent. Do you know how impossible it is to keep eyes on your child an absolute 100% of the time? Neva' happn'!
