It's more of a trend than anything. People want roomy boats now, that means more beam. The wider it is, the more weight you need to keep it from trying to plane. More weight needs more power... The old long slender ships just had their own kind of grace on the water. Even work boats had a dignity that new boats just don't have. Also, draft can be an issue on the slender boats, anything over 6-7' really limits your anchorage options in the Carribean.
