after i already ordered my new prop,esc/motor combo.....i found a spare esc, prop,a few motors i had stashed away....lol.
guess ill have extra for another build.

1140 kv turning a 8 1/4 x unknown pitch prop.
if i dig around enough i have servos......only thing im missing is landing gear and pushrods.
i tried 2 landing gear prints last night, one had a design flaw the other wouldnt stick to printers bed due to its thin design.
im trying a 3rd set now.

well it flies and it dont fly.
sadly i picked the wrong foam.
i never payed attention to weight.
id have to maintain almost full throttle just to keep her in the air.
and i even over powered the plane.
went weight her....a staggering 1.9 lbs flight weight.
the plane designed to be 1.5 lbs or less max wing loading.
took me awhile to figure out what went wrong.
went foam shopping at dollar store.
weight the walmart foam board @450 plus grams per sheet, the dollar store readi board came in at 114 grams per sheet......wow.
took 3 sheets to build the plane, way over weight limit.

so im almost done with the second feather lite version.

built a whole new plane last night from lighter readi board,im now just under 1lb target weight without battery.
the fuse and wig cost $3 material and a few hours to build.

ive doubled the foam on belly for landing gear and added wood backing, installed the landing gear,i got bigger wheels to put on.
i think ill be right at the .9 lbs flying weight without battery.
im .97 lbs with the old heavy motor mount,so im going to build new lite to compensate for the landing gear support.

she came in at 1.2 lbs total weight ready to fly.

keep in mind im not a pilot,i flew a 3-5 times a few years ago.
had the first flight.....she flies beautiful.
i got tired of waiting for the wind to go away, sat at the field for over 30 mins ready for takeoff and watching the wings flutter in the breeze.
i just went for it
took only 5 feet to leave the ground into the wind,1/4 throttle keep her at a comfortable 7-8 mph into the wind.she handles well.but the wind would gust to around 10 mph and the cub would be going up n down, sideways.i have plenty power to get back on track, but when the gust hits her in a turn she starts dropping fast with wind pushing on top the wings.
done 5 nose plants and finally broke a prop.
this is a tuff plane.
bent my stainless steel landing gear 3 times, lost a blade,a few minor wrinkles in around 10 mins in the air time.rarely went above half throttle, and that was mostly on takeoffs.
all take offs were from ground,3 on concrete 2 on grass,1 failed take off because 1 wheel bite the ground and caused front flip that broke a blade.
gonna look for a spare prop and go back in an hour or 2........winds predicted 3-5 mph by then.
hooked pack upto my imax, still had 4.04 volts per cell,so i feel like shes pretty effecient on power consumption.
shes fast and powerful, will climb vertical.

printed a test 7x4 prop

im actually impressed with the printed propeller, needs lite sanding and some balancing but she blows a fair bit amount of wind and is pretty quiet.its about as flexible as a cheap prop.
but now that i know it will print good and hold up (bench test) i can print the 9x4.

That foamboard is some good stuff to work with for cheap airframes! I built a couple of planes with it a while back. I couldn't find it in stock at the dollar tree stores up here so I ordered a case... lol I still have a big stack of it left. Someday when I stop being lazy I want to build a few more fun planes with it. So far I've built a "Peace Drone", a Cargo Twin of my own design, and a FT Explorer. There were a couple other short lived ones too... lol They were all great, but I found the stuff tends to warp over time, even with a layer of packing tape to laminate it. If you haven't yet, do go through Ed's videos, they'll have you hooked on designing/building in no time! lol https://www.youtube.com/user/ExperimentalAirlines

Here's a playlist with some of my builds https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...dHusK0He5gidS3

thanx keith, eds got some cool designs, the folding one is pretty neat.
nice fpv from the ft too.
i just built the ft sea otter, gotta find a cheap way to waterproof it though.
flitetest used to use craft paper n minwax, may give that a shot.
and i agree building is fun and easy.
so many plans out there, dont think i know enough about flight to design yet......but who knows.

today wasnt the best flying day.
no wind,but problems.
went out to the field with a buddy brought the wl f959 and the cub with 2 batteries.had long flights planned.
i hadent tried the cub with the printed prop, besides bench test.
fired up the cub took off from grass at half throttle in less than 10 feet, once i left the ground it didnt feel right, the tail was doing a strange rapid oscillating circle and the nose kept rising fast.i figured tail heavy,my battery must have slid back.set her down very ruff cuz she was difficult to control.
checked my cg,it was good,so i put battery further foward to make it nose heavy.a nose heavy plane will fly.a tail heavy plane will fly once.
took off again only to get the same result,so i throttled down to 1/4 throttle and the tail wag went away but my rudder inputs were very sensitive and not right.i kept her at around 10 ft off the ground and i made a slow 200 ft circle and set her down to see what was going on.on the ground everything worked well, still slightly nose heavy as i left it.
only difference from last flight is the prop, and no wind, same cheap tx thats non programable.
so i figured it was a prop issue,on a static spool up to full power prop tracked great and made a lot of wind.
back in the air i went 1/4 throttle she did fly when i gave it half throttle the tails death wobble returned and the planes nose went straight up,she started falling so i punched it an effort to hover her and gently land on the tail, doesnt work that great with no ailerons, done a very low back flip and broke the prop.
so lesson learned dont print a prop.
best i can put together 1 blade produced alot more lift than the other causing my wild tail and lack of control.
so i broke out the wl f959,it started losing rudder response randomly.

almost forgot the seaplane is ready for a land test flight, then the slow task of waterproofing everything and making her a lil better looking.

and yet another plane i dont need.....also have another style being planed now.
used a whole $1 20x30 sheet foam board,$13 2200 kv motor/esc/prop combo,2-$3 servos and a rx/tx i already owned,enabled elevon mixing to control it.
and a $13 3s 1300 lipo
so a 20x30 delta that weighs 430 grams ready to fly

Hey hey..
I didn't know you where a fly guy too...
All planes came out fantastic.

Have you looked into "Crashtest Hobbies" Planes?
"plane insane" in Utah has some great prices and stuff for the wings also.

I haven't been out to fly in 2 years.. but you gave me the itch to get a battery charged up.

I love scratch building them also.

great thread Nick
