Default JK Turned Pickup…An Old Build

This is the first “custom” hard body RC I built. Originally it was a used Tamiya CR-01 with a beat up lexan Land Cruiser body on it. It was fun for what it was but needed to be changed up. I should also mention this was built for my wife, it is her truck.

We’re going back in time here to when the New Bright JK’s and Junfac’s “Lizard” conversion were fresh on the market and readily available (told you….old build!). The Lizard conversion even today is a very nice piece and well thought out. Went together very easily. Most things from the CR-01 came over, axles, links, transmission, servos, 2.2’s and a set of Axial shocks take care of the dampening duties…pretty basic stuff but works like a charm.

I’m not a fan of four-door Jeeps so the body was never going to stay that way. Don’t forget this was all built years ago before different versions of these were available in plastic or lexan. With a bunch of cuts, styrene stock and finishing tools (putty, paint, sandpaper) I had a pickup that would fit the shorter CR01-turned-Lizard chassis. The rear portion of the roof was moved forward to keep a factory look. The bed cover was designed as a quick access panel for the battery so the body doesn’t have to come apart every time. A Tamiya Hilux roll bar was cut and stretched to fit the box dimensions and some small trim details added to the body.

The truck has been repainted twice since it was originally built and now wears a simple gold/semi gloss black scheme. Paint is all wet sanded, cleared, wet sanded and buffed. I like all my projects to have nice paint even if I know they aren’t going to survive. Paint can always be redone! One thing that doesn’t show up great in pics is the Poison Spyder hood decal that I used tone-on-tone on the tonneau cover. It’s a subtle touch that most people never notice.

That’s it really. As mentioned this was built long ago so thread updates weren’t a thing then (did I just seriously date myself?? Lol!). Oh, that is Wolowitz from TBBT in the driver seat and yes he is sitting on a pair of "phone books" to see over the wheel

Onto the pics.

...and a poser shot with my daughter's SCX-10 Dingo before it was run into, well, everything! The kid loves purple!

Wow! From a 4 door to a pickup. That's a beautiful build.
