Default Another long-running Defender 90 project (Finished, photos)

Hi

I've decided to jump on the CC-01/Defender bandwagon and get a LR 90 shell for my XC (soon to be long wheel base). I've a few off these and they look great, hopefully mine will look just as good.

I always knew the look I wanted for my Defender, so I'll be modelling it on the Land-Rover-Owner-Magazine Project 90. The original idea was to model the defender on this vehicle (photo taken at the 2007 LRO show):

But a few weeks after I decided on it, the land rover was crashed and has been undergoing a rebuild into this:

I took this photo at a Land Rover show last year. The photo doesn't show it, but the rear door is dark green. I think the mix of colours will look great on my CC-01 90, might even get in the magazine

This Land Rover has since been crashed but hey...

But the body is going on the back-burner for now, because I have to prepare the chassis first. This will consist of:
  • Fitting ball bearing steering
  • Making new suspension links from ally tube (CC-01 + 5mm)
  • Buying a CC-01 prop shaft
  • Finding a way to add 5mm to it
  • Getting some shock mounts from RC4WD

Along with the shock mounts, I'm also going to get some new tyres from RC4WD (not sure which ones, suggestions please), new white scale shocks, shock boots (not sure which colour yet) and probably a gear reduction eventually.

Wheels will be these:

These came this morning:

They will be used to make new links for my suspension, and were sent to me by TC member Twinset. The tube and threaded rod are both from B&Q, but none of my local stores stocked it.

I will be following his guide from the TC forums, which you can see here

The rod is M4, so I'll be using standard traxxas links, which are next on my shopping list.

Got some parts coming for a laptop I'm refurbing, so there might not be another update until that is done and working

Thought you other Landrover fans would apretiate this bit of technical specification on these shells.

1. It is a European Spec. Defender 90 Station Wagon.

2.The 90 Wagon with the roof that has the small oval window (called apline windows) in it would be a Wagon and all Wagons had rear doors. Only the utility versions had the lift gate/tail gate.

3.The rear markings would be a decal that says "Defender 90" and a Land Rover logo.
Only the older versions had the "Station Wagon" nameplates.

and production spec.s. ,...

The 1994 Defender 90 is Four Wheeler Magazines "Four Wheeler of the Year".
Only the 1994 Defender was sold in Canada. Small sales figures meant the model was dropped from the Canadian market.
The 1997 Defender 90 was the first automatic Defender ever produced for any country.
No 1996 Defender was offered.
1994 Defenders came with BF Goodrich Mud-Terrains. The 1995 and 1997 models came with BF Goodrich All Terrains due to customer complaints of tire noise.

In early 1994 all Landrover defenders , impoted to the US, had only a soft top bikini. In late 1994 there was a metal top option offered. I beleive this top to have a, lift gate/ tail gate configuration.

The station wagon model offered in 1995 on had a door configuration. The tail light configuration on the 1994 imports had square lenses in the rear like a japanesse model.
